On April 17 and 18 the Warm
Springs boxers competed in the Oregon
State Junior Olympic Boxing Tourna
ment which was held at the Westside
Elementary School in Madras. On Sat
urday we had two of our boxers go
into championship matches.
At the 15-16 year old, 125-pound
division, Jasper Smith vs. Domingo
Zamudio from Tacoma. Jasper lost,
but he had Zamudio on one knee at
the center of the ring praying during
the announcement of who the winner
would be. It was a good fight for both
boxers.
Trever Teweee was our other man
up. He also went up against a Tacoma
boxer. Jamarius Butler vs. Trever
Tewee, the match was close the first
two rounds, but in the third round it
looked as though Butler used up all his
gas, so Trever walked in for the vic
tory. Leander Smith was unopposed
champion at 101-pound, but we got him
a match bout with Antonio Martinez
from the Westside PAL boxing dub at f
the 11-12 year olds 100-pound weight
class. Leander took it to him and made
all the hard gym workouts work for
him and a winner he was.
At 14-15 year olds and 125 pounds:
Wesley Graybael vs. Marquise Weston
from Tacoma Boys and Girls Club.
Wesley had it in him, but it wasn't until
round three that he let it all out and
Marquise had nothing to come back
with, so the victory was ours.
On Sunday we had two more match
bouts and we won both of them. First
we saw Leander Smith out box another
Beaverton PAL boxer to collect another
victory for the Rez.
Wesley G. also boxed another
Tacoma boxer at the 125-pound weight
class and scored with many jabs to de
feat the game young Tacoma club
fighter. It was a good show and we are
thankful that our boxing club from
Central Oregon hosted such a clean
event.
The boxers we mentioned from our
club have advanced to the regional level
of the Junior Olympic box offs. The
Junior Olympic Regional Boxing Tour
nament wilj be held in the city of Pasco,
Wash., on May 15.
We'll be traveling there and if we
win we'll advance to the national level
at Lexington, Texas, and that will be
sometime this summer. We don't have
a full bracket on our boxing team, but
it would be nice to have a couple of
larger boxers. The age limits for USA
Boxing is from 8 years to 36 years old.
Boxing is a year round season non-stop
event. Try it, you might like it and if
you don't the first time, you can always
come back. It's all up to the
individual.... Boxing?

WS. boxing club travels to Burns
On Saturday, April 24 the Warm
Springs Nation Boxing Club traveled
to Burns. At the Old Camp Casino is
where we found the ring all set and
ready to go. (What a nice boxing ring
they have.) Anyway, we intended on
having two or our boxers see action,
but for some reason the boxer from
Blackfeet, Idaho didn't make the weigh
in's and that was a let down for Trever
Tewee, who himself weighed in at 151
pounds. There is more action up ahead
remember? Anyway, we did see our 101
pound, 12-13 year Leander Smith go
in wearing his Warm Springs Commu
nity Center Boxing shirt. I feel good
when I see these young boxers in where
the big fish are and knowing they're
Native and pride in their name.
Leander Smith vs. Alex Lopez from
the Vista Boxing Club of Boise, Idaho.
Non-stop action by Leander, even
though Lopez was four inches taller and
had a reach advantage, the motion to
win was in the working feet of Leander.
However, you must make the tools you
were born with work for you and thank
yourself for being compatible. Keep up

out or whatever you're doing do it right.
I like the Old Camp Casino. After
the weigh-in we went to their cafe and
downed some hamburgers. It was a
good trip, there were two boxing clubs
from Forthall, Idaho and another one
from Klamath Falls. They had another
Rez Boxer there who fought his first
match ever as the heavy weight. He
and one of the Central Oregon boxers
put a darn good fight on. It was a good
show, two big fellas going toe to toe. It
was 11 match bouts at $10 a seat to
watch, a fair price for live entertain
ment. Warm Springs, thank you for being
our home. Our next match will be right
here at home, so come down to the
Community Center on May the 8th and
watch the boxing show. Starts at 6 p.m.,
you'll see a lot of good action. Drive
with care and keep your grades up. It's
important that you do.
