Red Devils win at Pendleton By Tony Suppah Basketball coach Simnasho Red Devils Champions Pendleton BAAD Tourney We played in the boys 10 12 division at the Pendleton Battle Against Alcohol and Drugs (BAAD) Tournament on March 22-23. Year after year, it is a very competitive tournament put on by the Umitilla Tribes. In 2002 Redsky and Rosey played with Cece Moses' team, and helped win the 9 and under division, then in 2003 the Red Devils placed third. I'd truly like to thank the parents and the sponsors for their support. Our roster con sists of Captains Redsky Walker and Rosey Twostarrs Suppah, C.J. Easterling, Turner Gill, Austin Say, Rabe Clements, Sean Sohappy, Craig Smith and Anthony Maldenado. We were defeated by the Wapato Wizards in the first game. This was the same team we beat in the Cougars sixth grade and under tourney. They were well prepared for the game, while we played bad both offensively and defensively. In our second game, the team pulled together, defeating Yakima to move on in the bracket. We won the game by a big margin. In the semi-finals we played against two-time defend ing champs Omak, Wash. They were very quick and good shoot ers, very scrappy, and pressed the whole game. From start to finish each team took turns taking the lead in the game. In the end we pulled ahead, and were victori ous by 10 points, to move into the championship game. In the championship game we played the 2003 runner up, Klamath Nation, coached by my good friend Ed Case Jr. Right from the start they jumped ahead of us, well coached. We played catch up the whole game. Our future Buffa loes never gave up or quit the whole game. We played a very physical team. We began improv ing as the game progressed, making up for our mistakes. With two minutes and nine seconds left we were ten points down. Then Austin Say and Turner Gill hit three pointers, and Craig Smith stole the ball scoring two points. We put up a full-court press, stole the ball, tying the game, and then they went ahead by one point. With six seconds left Redsky Walker Suppah hit for three points, putting us ahead 42-40. I Ie rushed back on defense in tercepting a long pass. He was fouled, missed his shot, but got his rebound. 1 Ie got fouled shooting, no call as the ball was heading out of bounds. C.J. Easterling dove and kept the ball in play, end ing the game, Red Devil Champions. Klamath for the second year in a row was runner up. They said they'd see us next year. - " .;:!.. Boxers compete at Spokane Junior Olympics tournament coming to Madras By An m in Smith lloxinji coach On Saturday, March 13 and Sunday, March 14 at the East Valley Middle School in Spokane, Wash., a few local USA Ama teur Boxers weighed in for ac tion. The lightest of our few was the young man who faints a lot, Mr. Wesley Graybael, weighing in at 119 pounds, but having no one in his Novice weight divi sion (119 pounds). He took a walk-through award for being a game contestant. But just for the ride I got him a match bout for Sunday with Aarron McChesney from the South Everett, Wash., boxing club. This was the second time this year that these two fellas went against one another. Wesley wasn't' snipes but he went all three rounds this time, and if they touch gloves again, I know it'll even be a closer con test. Another rez boxer who we all like to watch stepped on the scales and it said 150 pounds, man that was too much, but the extra five pounds was too much to shake before the scales closed, so I moved him up to the 154 pounds division, but there was no one in that weight class in the 154 pound novice division, just Trevor, so he got awarded with an uncontested championship award and I did with Wesley, 1 got him a match bout for Saturday with one of West Portland's better 15-16 year old open boxers, Alfonzo Hernandez, who not long ago just turned open, and because Trevor is considered as a 15-16 year old open boxer. I'd bet any one that Trevor beat him in the rematch. Even though he lost to him this time, it wasn't by a lot. Austin Smith Jr. had his first open boxing tournament match in the open senior 152 pound weight division. He boxed Daw son Carlson from Kelowna, B.C., a Canadian boxing club. When you mrn open it's like start ing all over again for some fight ers, and so it seemed for Austin Smith. In the first round came a hard left upper cut from Carlson and it brought Smith down for a count of nine. I was in the corner and could feel him making himself get up and he did. I Ie beat the count but not for the pain a good body punch produces and so the referee stopped this match just before the round ended. Who cares? In boxing a good referee makes sense and maybe it just being a sport can save emotions for another day. So, the Warm Springs Box ing Club brought something to the Inland Northwest Associa tion Boxing Championships and came back with some three losses. Our next travel will be to the Oregon Junior Olympics Tournament on April 17-18. It's being held at the Wcstsidc El ementary School in Madras, only 14 miles away. Warm Springs will enter six or seven boxers in this event, so please come and make some noise for us. Also, for all the hard workers at Fire Management: Couldn't travel without your good ole van, "thanks." Utilities Department, "Thank you for the magic ," and Warm Springs Vehicle Pool, "White Keith" gets a thank you and hope you got a secretary by now.
