Fifth staff member
at Chemawa on leave
SALEM (Al) - Officials at
the Chemawa Indian boarding
school in Salem have placed a
fifth staff member on adminis
trative leave.
Nedra Darling, spokes
woman for the Bureau of In
dian Affairs, would not disclose
the name of the staff member,
or any specifics about why the
person was put on paid leave.
She did say it is not related
to the death of Cindy Gilbert
Sohappy, 16, on Dec. 6.
Four other staff members -a
dormitory manager, one se
curity staff member, and a
school administrator - were put
on leave after the death of
Sohappy, a Warm Spring
tribal member who died of al-.
cohol poisoning while locked in
a holding cell at the school, ac
cording to federal officials.
The cells arc no longer being
used, officials said last week, and
School Supervisor Larry Byers
said last week that intoxicated
students now are taken imme
diately to a medical facility. ;
The inspector general's Of-;
fice of the Department of the
Interior continues its investiga
tion into the school's policies for
handling intoxicated students.
The FBI also is conducting a
criminal investigation.

sonal positions. A punctual and
reliable individual responsible
for ensuring the safety of facil
ity patrons by preventing and re
sponding to emergencies. Certi
fied Red Cross (or equivalent
program) lifeguard training, cur
rent CPR and First Aid, or will
ing to train to become certified.
Sales associate, four part
