Dereke Tasympt
My dear people, greetings
and goodwill. I am Sloutia
Tasympt, English name Dereke
Tasympt (Tyrone Ike). As a
nominee to be one of three rep
resentatives for the Agency Dis
trict I am honored to present to
you, why my appointment would
be good for our people.
Many circumstances have
placed our Confederated Tribes
in a dire situation. Our commu
nity problems, organizational
problems, our country's eco
nomic state, our tribes' eco
nomic state and implications
from a conservative govern
ment. We need a Council which
will lead by example via coop
eration amongst the three dis
tricts and requiring such at the
executive level, between the
branches and departments, and
between our enterprises.
We have too rrtany Chiefs, in
a sense, and everyone (the
people, Council, the boards, the
enterprises and the organization)
needs to contribute to the
wellness of our people and com
munity. No single body, branch
or department is going to wave
a magic wand and solve our
problems. We the people need
to step up and not only com
plain, but offer solutions and
then contribute to those solu
tions. Our government needs to
learn how to listen to its people,
not react to paper articles or to
people who do not live here.
We've come this far together,
let's continue forward together
as Indian people.
I was fortunate enough to be

raised traditionally and to gain
at least somewhat of an educa
tion. I learned how to read in
our constitution and by-laws, our
tribal, state and federal laws,
because my mom was an officer
of our Tribal Court. I grew up
in these books. While growing
up, I learned from my parents,
Pushas, Tillas, Ullas, Cuxlas and
other leaders, like Olncy Patt Sr.,
Linton Winishut, Delbert Frank
Sr. and Chief Wallulatum, some
history of our people, gover
nance, reservation and ceded
areas. I have worked in the le
gal field most of my profes
sional life, with a substantial ex
perience in the business field
when I was recruited as a col
lections officersupervisor to
help turn our Credit Depart
ment around because they had
too much bad debt. I also did a
stint at our former bread and
butter, the Warm Springs mill.
Throughout my career, I've ac
cepted or been placed in jobs
no one else wanted or could do.
Thus far, thanks to good
mentoring and hard work, I've
been successful. I was in college
and was recruited back to Pub
lic Safety shortly after the snake
bite incident. Now I am your
Chief Prosecutor, I don't claim
to be a politician, but have been
pretty successful at lobbying for
good causes. My activities for
our community have been:
former president of the eter
ans Day Powwow, a founding
member for the Affordable
Housing Program with Marcia
Soliz (she did most of the work,
I was just one of her idea guys),
helped form our Credit Depart
ment into an enterprise (which
has become very successful),
provided testimonial input for
our Child Abuse and Neglect
Manual, and I continue to sup
port our local youth activities.
As a tribal member, I hope
the people make an educated
vote when appointing people to
represent them. Since Council
members are responsible for
our tribes' spiritual, physical and
financial well being, the people
should choose members who do
not have bad debts or records
with the tribes. Before manag
ing the people's finances, a rep
resentative should demonstrate
the character, ethics and finan
cial responsibility with hisher
own money.
It's important to have repre
sentatives who will listen to their
people and employees who ad
dress issues at the front lines.
And, my dear people, when we
complain about a problem, let's
provide a solution! Let's quit liv
ing in a world of negativity,
thievery, drugs or bad politics
and forge ahead to success to
gether, as a people, by capitaliz
ing on our positive traits as a
people and community. We've
got to beat the adverse effects
of Anglo-ism, by strengthening
our roots and educating our
people.
Our cultural identity has
pulled us through termination
and assimilation periods. There
has to be a good mix in order
for us to be successful. As a
member of your Council, this
would be my goal. We can't bank
on a new casino forever, we've
got to find new revenues and
resources for our future genera
tions. Our resources are in our
people. Thank you and vote well.
