My people, I thank my
brothers Kirby Heath and Sa
cred Heart Suppah for the
nomination, which I accepted.
Year after year, the people state
there need to be some changes.
I'd like to be part of that change.
I know I'm very capable to
serve and work on your behalf
toward some positive changes.
Truly believing, the voice
needs to be given back to the
people. This has been forgotten
today - who elects the Council
- to serve each of them. The
outside world is always watch
ing Indian Country. So we can
not defeat ourselves with our
indifferences, by tribal separa
tion. We need to unite and be
one strong voice again, as a dis
trict, as a tribe.
We need to set our priorities
and deal with them, tribal, state
and federal issues. All that we
have today, we have to fight to
keep. Our treaty rights, sover
eignty, resources and jurisdic
tion. There are many efforts in
modern times to delete and
challenge sovereign immunity,
trust responsibility and treaty
rights. Most recendy, bills, have
been introduced in Congress
that seek to limit the ability of
tribes to govern themselves and
give authority to states over the
tribes.
No major changes have been
enacted. However, our ances
tors and elders stated there is
nothing more important to In
dian governments and people
than our sovereignty. It keeps
the states from interfering with
that right, while allowing Con
gress to override an Indian
nation's authority.
Being a self government
(Tribal Council) means to over
see what happens to our people
on a day to day basis, and what
happens to them in the future.
To be able to make decisions or
recommendations "with the
people's input" to protect our
rights, the land, air, water and
2004
so on.
Our elders remind us of the
importance of the long view. To
look ahead not just at today to
see things in the much broader
perspective of generations that
are yet to come. There's a popu
lar saying in Indian Country, that
each generation must provide
for the seven generations that
follow it. We must find resources,
as our elders have done for us.
Our elders are important.
Our young people are impor
tant, that's our future. The stu
dents of today are our warriors
of tomorrow. If we can take
what our young people have to
offer us, with their knowledge
of today, and take the knowl
edge of our elders, with their
knowledge of yesterday, and
combine those two things. We
have something to hand to our
young people's children and their
children's children.
Times change, our culture,
tradition, languages, remain the
same. That's how we survive
with daily prayer and guidance
by the Creator.
There have been so many is
sues of concern brought out by
the people these past few years
i that I feel and believe need to
j be dealt with. Also, to have more
information and meetings to
keep the people updated on
what's happening. These are
what I'm referring to:
Tribal preference, married
. into the tribe, other Indians, for
their employment. Living ex
pense, raises, way overdue.
Casino's budget. Break down on
annual budget report. Our own
schools, not built on private land.
Treaty rights (fishing). Tax ex
emption. Indian Child Welfare
Act, keeping our children on the
rez. Local contracting for tribal
businesses. Supporting youth
programs and employment. Re
tirement. More housing for el
ders. Salary adjustments.
I'm asking for your support
and votes, to be your Council
representative. Tony "Big Rat"
Suppah.

If elected it would be a privi
lege to proactively serve as a
Tribal Council representative. I
come from a long line of active
tribal members who involved
themselves in the tribal affairs
whether it was for feasts, gen
eral council, funerals, memori
als, namegiving, celebrations,
, food gathering and putting up
salmon and venison. A way that
I've continued throughout my
own lifetime and especially af
ter I married my late husband
and former Tribal Councilman
Grant Waheneka.
It has been an honor to serve
my people on the Cultural and
Heritage Committee for the past
two terms.
I have always done my level
best to serve and represent my
people's interests in the most
dignified manner. With great
regard to uphold the values,
beliefs and teachings that I was
raised with. I also carry a strong
knowledge base of history, and
have known every councilman
who has served since the
Wheeler Howard Act.

clean and sober life, from that I
have clarity in my thinking and
a very strong constitution. I have
lived through the hard times that
teach us to never take what we
have for granted. To always put
away for tomorrow, and look
ahead and greet our newborn
relatives as our single greatest
resource. I have always wbrked' "
all my life, a habit I still carry '
today and that is to make my
own living.
As a sovereign nation within
a nation I believe that the Treaty
is the single most important key
reference document, along with
our Tribal Constitution and By
Laws. Our sovereignty statement
recognizes and protects Mt.
Jefferson as sacred, a statement
that should not be taken lightly,
nor should it be cast aside with
recklessness and indifference.
We have our ancestors to thank
for this land base we call the
reservation, all of the natural
resources and treaty rights must
be upheld and made use of.
Today we are the stewards of
all of this to ensure it is pre
served, protected and kept in
tact for generations yet born.
