BuMding from
the living room
the only way to go
By Sid Miller
Publisher Emeritus
"Burp!" "Ahh!" After a good Thanksgiving dinner I thought
I'd click on the tube and watch a football game. Sat down on the
couch and got all adjusted, took one more stretch, yawned, leaned
back and was ready to watch the game. Yawned again, closed
my eyes and when I opened my eyes again I saw the game was
over. Hey! What happened? Must have fallen asleep
all through the game.
Well at that point it was about time for seconds
on that old turkey. Filled my plate with food and
sat down to "munch," changed the channel to bull
riding. The Pro Bull Riders Tour with bull riders Chris Chevers,
Cody Lambert, Wiley Peterson, Ross Coleman, Mike Lee to name
a few. Bulls like Indian Nation, Slam Dunk, Hammer Head, Al
ligator and many more tough bulls.
Bull riding from the living room is the only way to go. To
watch each rider climb aboard, work his bull rope and set his
hand in the handhold, take the wrap around his hand. Every
thing is so near and makes me feel like I could climb aboard the
bull, but oh! Some of those falls from the bull - I could just
about feel the thump on the grounds especially when they are
thrown from a tough spinning bull. Almost makes me want to
say "ouch!"
The Pro Bull Riders (PBR) tour is one of the toughest sports
today. All those who compete are doing it on their own. A cow
boy pays his own way and no one can tell him when or where to
go. The bull riding challenge is very competitive as there are big
purses at stake. Each purse is in the thousands. Watching the bull
riding takes me back to the past, and I also remember how I got
all those bumps and bruises that I attribute to bodily injuries that
have to be taken care of by surgery today.
Today there are two sets of bull riders, the ones that follow
the Pro Rodeo Tour and the others who follow the big rodeo
circuit. A bull rider in each group has his goal that at the end of
the season he will be the champion.
There is no difference in bull riding in whichever group a
cowboy decides to follow. Each group has a lot of dollars to
compete for. In the PBR circuit there is nothing but bull riders
on the program. For the cowboy who follows the rodeo circuit,
there are other events to fill a good show.
iC fo matter whichever group a bull rider decides to take, the
competition is tough. In the rodeo circuit there are other events
like bareback, bronc riding, bull riding, and tie down roping,
steer wrestling, team roping, and the girl barrel race.
Yep! There's no guarantees of any kind, the cowboys just have
to do their best. It's a tough way to make a living.

Dear Members of Jefferson

hello neighbors, family and
friends.
I would like to formally
thank all of my sponsors, fam

agement and financial support
as I attended and competed in
the 28,h Annual Indian National
Finals Rodeo in San Jacinta,
Calif. The rodeo was Oct. 13
17. The final rodeo was a spec
tacular event for me. This is the
third time I have qualified for
this prestigious affair.
I rode my saddle broncs to
the best of my ability and the
rodeo stock contractor, Casper
Baca, brought his best bucking
stock to this rodeo. 1 was only
able to respectfully place in the
third go round of the finals ro
deo. I represented the Pacific
Northwest from the Western
States Indian Rodeo Association
at this National Finals Rodeo.
Thank you again. And watch for
me on the rodeo season of

Headstone book
Last year a family came to our
office and borrowed our Book
for Headstones. We are always
glad to assist the public in find
ing a good headstone, but would
like to have it returned to us as
we have several other families
wanting to order a headstone as
well. We will not mention any
names just for confidentiality but
would you please contact the

You may be able to

Safe holiday
This holiday season, please
celebrate responsibly and don't
take a chance. Driving under the
influence of drugs and alcohol
is a serious crime and very dan
gerous. In 1999, about 16,000
fatalities and more than 305,000
injuries occurred due to alcohol
related crashes. This translates
into one death every 33 minutes
and one injury every two min
utes. Additionally, traffic-related
crashes annually result in more
than $45 billion in economic
costs. Designate a sober driver,
or plan to stay where you are
when drinking alcohol.
December is Drunk,
Drugged Driving Prevention
Month. Drive safely. Drive so
ber. Have a designated driver,
if you are drinking alcohol. Wear
your seat belt. Put your children
in car seats.

as usual making their move on
our tribal natural resources by
one means or another. They
then tend to lead the people into
believing their claims, thus per
suading our tribal officials into
giving us Native people these
seasons as well as boundaries in
which we are allowed to do these
type of things, which have been
our so-called sovereignty rights
ever since the U.S. government
signed treaty rights to what was
never theirs in the first place.
So I find this as being another
way of assimilation, which is to
say that one day we as Native
people of this land will truly
have no say or sovereignty on
our own tribal lands, which is
the U.S. government's ultimate
plan towards all Native people
and reservations. For it's time we
as Native people need to take a
stand and stand firm for our
sovereignty or what's left of it.
For the sake of our children and
their children and on.
