Changes
noted as
school begins
By Selena Boise
What is going on in Warm
Springs these days? Well, I have
been hearing a lot of things go
ing on, or not going on in Warm
Springs.
School starting
has brought out a
few things for us
all to think about.
There is that issue about the lan
guage program put on hold for
a while. That affects my young
est son. And there is the fee re
quirement for high school sports
that came up for me and my
oldest son, who wants to run on
the Cross Country team again.
Well, the language program is
a good thing to have for the
children. I've watched my chil
dren learn basic words since
Head Start. Then the language
was taught in the kindergarten,
where my daughter learned
Sahaptin from then until the
fourth grade. She was coming
along and learning well. She
stumped Dave a few times at
the Spilyay Tymoo, Dave is our
editor and he attended Sahaptin
classes regularly.
But my daughter enjoyed
learning new words and sharing
with us at home. She sang happy
birthday to my mom one year
for her birthday. It was special.
Well, my son started learning
Wasco when he reached kinder
garten. He was happy with that,
and learned to Wasco dance as
well. He was sharing words with
us at home.
But when he reached the first
grade, he was placed in a Paiute
class and began learning Paiute.
At first he was confused, but he
began to learn, He shared some
of his new words with us at
., home. ." ; ' '
I couldn't think of any fam
ily members who spoke Paiute,
at least not since my Grandma
passed on. I remember she used
to speak Paiute and Sahaptin.
She even taught her dog to un
derstand Paiute words, which
was amazing and funny at the
same time. I had planned on
moving him into a class that was
learning Wasco, but decided to
let him try Paiute for a year and
see what happens.
I would prefer to have my
children learn a language that is
used by family members, so that
they can use their new words
and expand on those words with
the family members.
I think that the program was
trying to develop a system to
incorporate a'l three languages
into the school system, and the
children learned the particular
language taught in their class
room. I'm sure that this worked
for some children, but the par
ents may have had mixed feel
ings about it, like myself.
I believe that the language
program will develop a system
to incorporate all three languages
into the learning environment.
At the same time they should
keep the preferred language in
mind for families. I'm sure there
is a way.
I'm okay with this issue tak
ing time to come to a solution.
But the fee for school sports
was a little difficult for me.
When sntdents return from
summer break, there are a lot
of fees associated with starting
school. That would include
school pictures, lunches, and
now sports. That's not counting
the back to school clothes, shoes
and supplies.
Normally, if things ran their
usual course and nothing came
up unexpectedly, there would
not be a problem. I guess just
being prepared for school is not
enough. Always expect there will
be that little bit of a surprise.
And usually you end up paying.

A thank you
The family of Ira Merritt
wishes to thank all of our
friends from the Warm Springs
Nation for their kind expres
sions of sympathy, cards, food,
floral tributes and songs.
We would especially like to
thank those tribal members for
their representation at the cel
ebration of his life. We would
like to thank those who spoke
at the celebration, blessed his
home and sang his final songs
to help him along in his journey
to the next world. We felt it was
a great honor.
Letters to the
Ira always considered many
Warm Springs tribal members
to be his great friends. He told
innumerable stories about inter
actions on and off the reserva
tion. This was a long friendship
that helped him prosper in life
and business.
Your compassion and kind
ness will be remembered by his
family.

SMART kids
I hope you and your children
have had an enjoyable summer.
With the new school year start
ing we are once again asking you
to become a volunteer reader
for the SMART reading pro
gram, one hour per week, start
ing Oct. 14, every Tuesday and
Thursday.
For those of you who are not
familiar with SMART (Start
Making A Reader Today), it is a
literacy program designed for
children in kindergarten through
third grade. Our goal is to help
students who could benefit from
some extra one-on-one, espe
cially with reading. We match the
children with caring, dependable
adult volunteers with whom they
will read twice a week, each time
for one-half hour on Tuesdays
and Thursdays throughout the
school year. .
We have found that children
who participate in SMART im
prove their reading skills, usu
ally attend school more often
and look forward to their read
ing sessions. We don't teach the
children how to read - the
teachers do that - what we do
is expose them to more litera
ture and help instill in them the
love of reading. The SMART
child will also receive two books
a month to take home and keep.
All of our volunteers are
trained and have their back
ground checked to ensure the
safety of your children. I hope
that if your child's teacher rec
ommends SMART, you will let
him or her participate. If you
feel your child would benefit
from some extra one-on-one
reading time, ask his or her
teacher about the program. We
need more volunteer readers to
read to the students at Warm
Springs Elementary.
If you have any questions
regarding SMART, or if you
would like to become a volun
teer reader, please feel free to
contact the local SMART office
at 317-3225 (VM) or leave a
message at the WSE office at
553-1128 for Myrna Frank and
I will call you ASAP. The
SMART area office number is
382-6466. Thank you for your
time. We're looking forward to
another great year. I will be call
ing all the past readers soon.

gram coordinator

Disappointed
To the Warm Springs com
munity: My son was unable to attend
the 2003 Poet's Convention, due
to lack of funds. We were short
$395. We'd like to thank Jim
Manion, of Power Enterprises,
and Larry Potts, of Forest Prod
ucts Industries, for their dona
tion totaling $200, which was
ultimately returned.
We were able to sell $235
worth of raffle tickets. We still
had the raffle drawing and
prizes were awarded accord
ingly. The fundraiser of pizza
and hamburgers raised enough
for the plane tickets and pur
chase of the other raffle items,
including the monetary raffle
item of $200.
Since we paid the convention
the required fee of $350, raised
from the car washes that Walsey
and friends held during the past
, month and a half, Walsey will
still be awarded a Famous Poet
trophy and certificate. They will
be contacting, via mail, if he was
awarded the college scholarship
of $15,000 to $50,000.
That we were unable to at
tend the convention was very
disappointing. I was heart
shaken, because my son was dis
appointed and upset. I explained
to Walsey the financial hardships
I endure as a single parent, with
no supplemental income or
child support. After discussing
our financial budget, Walsey and
I decided not to attend the event.
We had enough for everything
but the meals. I wasn't about to
let my son starve for four days.
Nor did I want to bother any
body else for additional funds.
Walsey would like to thank the
following people:
Richard "Animal" Tohet for
writing letters to everybody.
Walsey's many friends for the
hard work at the car washes.
Mary Stewart and police per
sonnel who assisted with the
fundraisers; and the following
who contributed raffle items:
Kah-Nee-Ta High Desert
Resort and Casino; Warm
Springs Community Wellness
Center; The Warm Springs Po
lice Department; Sister Raylene;
and KWSO for the public ser
vice announcement and inter
view. Appreciation
This letter should have been
written a long time ago, but it's
been really hard to come around
and do it. So now that I am
ready, I would like to take this
time to thank all the people who
helped our family in our time
of need. It has been seven
months now since our mother,
atwai 1 lelene "Spunky" (Arthur)
Teeman, passed on, and there
are many people who stepped
forward to help our family when
the time came.
First, we'd like to thank Char
lotte I lerkshan, who visited and
comforted my mother while she
was in the hospital during her
last days. Also, Daisy Ike and
Millie Colwash, who were there
to support us and be with us
before and after the funeral.
Thank you to Annie Meanus
and family, and Radinc Spino
and family for cooking the
meals, To F.llcn Thompson, who
was there throughout the fu
neral. Thank you to all the
drummers who conducted the
beautiful service, the Medicine
Society, Bcrnicc Mitchell and
Editor
family, Lucinda Green, Larry
Dick, Alex Tohet, "Chubby"
Robinson, "Animal" Tohet,
Elfreda Mitchell, Roberta
Heath, all the Road Warriors,
Full Gospel Church, Shaker
Church, Sister Pauline, who did
the Rosary, all of our mom's
friends and classmates from
Chemawa, our extended family
in Washington, and all the
people who stepped forward to
help us, we thank you all.
If we have forgotten to men
tion your name, just know that
we appreciated everything you
did and thank you from the
bottom of our hearts. With all
your help, my mother had her
last rites given to her in the best
manner they could have. It was
a beautiful service, and it
couldn't have been without your
support and help. Once again,
thank you. Respectfully,
Cecilia Herrera and
Marta Rubio

Missed but not
I'd like to take this time to
thank all of my friends and
family who have continued to
be so supportive during the
loss of my mother, Carrie
Mae Jackson. I know the loss
was her gain. She no longer
suffers the life of being re
strained to wheelchair, and all
of the illness and pain that
came with it.
I still fight the fact that she
is now gone, not wanting to
let go, feeling so childish at
times, feeling so lost and
alone, I know in my heart the
twelve and a half years I
knew her were some of the
best years of my life. In the
short time I knew her she
taught me so much. She filled
the emptiness I had learned
to accept, growing up, know
ing nothing about where I
came from, all of the whys
that come with being adopted.
The best part of finding my
mother? I finally looked like
someone! Both of my biologi
cal parents are now deceased.
I was adopted and raised by
Richard and Vivian Macy
since birth. Words cannot ex
press the anguish and pain of
losing both of my biological
parents. Thanks to Richard
and Vivian, I will still be
someone's baby girl,
someone's baby sister...
Birthday
Happy belated seventh
birthday to Brent Thomas.
We all love you very much
and wish you all the best for
the coming year. Love, your
mom, your HP sisters Torey
and Sharcen Thomas.

Spilyay letters to
The Spilyay welcomes any

ters can be no longer than 350
words in length.
Letters beyond that length
your first steps, I would praise
your good deed, close my eyes
and picture you walking to me.
I think of you a lot more often,
it seems, for you're my only
daughter, the girl of my
dreams.
Mahala-Keta are words that
I say to you, the meaning you
ask, it means I love you. I
prayed to the heavens way up
above to send me an angel of .
whom I could love. Wipe my
eyes of the tears, yet you're only
2, but I got my angel and my
angel is you.
I wish I could be there to
make things right, but this can
not happen, your mother and I
only argue and fight.
Let's not talk or speak of the
past, but look to your future and
the shadow you'll cast.
When you feel happy or even
quite sad, just remember who
loves your dear old dad.
D'Lynray, ' Mahala-Keta, I
haven't forgot about you,
