When she came in with her stuff, I looked at her and said, "Hello my name is Spud and I am from Oregon." She looked at me with a weird ex pression on her face and said, "Spud?" as if to ask if that was really my name. We got to talk ing and realized we were not much different. I spent a large amount of time with her my first year and she made me feel safe. She made me feel that even though I was not around my family or friends I still had someone, and it was better to have a semi stranger for a friend than no one at all. It was very easy to make friends in Colorado. It is actu ally very hard not to. You meet so many new people and you're around them so much, not knowing their name or face would be impossible. The jobs are night janitorial. Closing date to apply is Aug. 24. Call 553 1112, ext. 3401 for informa tion. Kah-Nee-Ta is coming to the end of its busy season, and nearly all the different de partments and areas of the resort have enough workers to finish out the summer, said Margie Tuckta, of the Kah-Nee-Ta Human Re sources Department. Employment at the resort is very seasonal. During the summer, Kah-Nee-Ta em ploys close to 370 people. This figure drops by about 100 during the off-season. The end of the season at the resort is Labor Day, which is just around the corner. That the resort has just two available jobs is good news in that it means the employees who have been hired this year have worked out well. Of the total number of employees at the resort and casino, about one-third are tribal member employees. There are 367 employees at the resort, and 117 are tribal member employees. These figures were as of July of this year. The fields of work at the resort range from the gift shop, front desk, din ing room and kitchen, ban quets, lounge, casino custo dial, slots, table games, secu rity, cage, reservations, housekeeping, spa, among many other types of employ ment at Kah-Nee-Ta. and when they are all pull to gether they can do great things. On the other hand it is very hard to make any friends in Winter Harbor, Maine. I have been here for a litde over a week and I don't really know anybody from this town. Winter Harbor is a very small town. Its first big restaurant just opened up and there's a five-and-dime in town, but not many places for teenag ers to hang out. That makes it hard for me to meet people my own age. I have met some cool people a lot older than me just by go ing around town and doing com munity things such as attending dances, going to the store, eat ing out, and going places with my aunt. People skills are the most im portant things you will need in life, because meeting people is what makes friends, and friends are the best thing in the world. They will help you through tough times and be there for you when you need them. tember 3, 2003.
