ECoosb EEWA: The vvy it is Page 4 Spilyay Tymoo August 21, 2003 Loss, grief and goals of life By Selena T. Boise Reporter I remember when I went into treatment, one of the things that I had to do was write an obitu ary for myself. At the time I didn't understand why I had to do this. But then I realized that it was to see for myself all that I have accom plished in my life so far. I am beginning to feel the realiza tion of life again, as I have at times taken things for granted. Having people die tragically or slowly due to illness is a hard thing for families to deal with after the fact. This happened recently to the families of Dor othy "Pebbles". George, and Mylan "Crouch" Smith. These two lives are now gone and the families left behind will miss them. They were parents, friends and true believers in family. I will miss Pebbles and her smiling face, but at the same time I am glad that she no longer suffers with the illness that she had. I will miss her at family gath erings in the community. She was not shy about getting right in there for the balloon toss, egg toss or three-legged race. She was there to have a good time and that was what she did. What I liked the most about her was that her anger was short-term and she didn't let it get her down, she continued to Uvejher ;ltfe to the. fullest with , smile'. That is something that we " can all learn from her, to let go of things that can drag us down. Pebbles has definitely accom plished a great deal in her life. She carried her pride in being an Elvis Fan Club President of Warm Springs, and she did that well. She was Miss Warm Springs for the tribes, which is a great accomplishment. There were many things that she did in her life and her fam ily no doubt is proud of her. I will miss her at the women's pool league games. She was al ways fun to play pool with. One thing I didn't know was that she was once a logger. Another logger who will be missed by many is Mylan, or Crouch, the name all his friends called him. It is hard to be a re sponsible family man, but he came through the barriers and was truly family-oriented, an admirable trait that will be re membered by his loved ones. I find it easier to snap back to reality and realize that I have not accomplished all of my goals in life, and if I were to write my own obituary I would not be pleased with myself. I decided 12 years ago to be a mom to my children and teach them to be ready for the world after school. I have to say that is my biggest accomplishment. I never dreamed I would have to lead them through stressful situations, but I managed and I didn't even realize it. I have yet to see them through many other situations that will come up. In our community accom plishments and losses are always upon us, and wc deal with them the way we are taught to deal with them. The best way is to be surrounded by friends and family who can share it with you. Toe ness What did one raindrop say to the others? Let's get together and pool our moun ts, Yikts. f Spilyay speaks Many thanks This letter is to thank every one who had a part of Pebbles' care during her illness, hospital stay and funeral. A better place To my family, friends and relatives, I would like to take this time to thank all the elders, drummers, cooks, servers and all those that helped with our na na, a mother, sister, friend, grandma, and a great bcadworker. It was one of the hardest things for me to handle and to see her suffer like she did. I couldn't accept the fact the pills weren't working and wondered, "why her?" As much as she suffered, I could feel her hurt but Pebbles would smile around, joke and laugh around with everybody. I decided she's not suffering anymore and in a better place. She's probably dancing with the King up there in Graccland with her blue suede mocassins (aye). I want to thank everyone for the prayers and thoughts. I'm gonna miss you very much, "Tun Mi." 1 love you very much. With all my love to the kids Letters to the Jo Jo, Angela, Wolfman, and especially Tasha and Ashley, take care of each other. Your kindness, guiding and explaining of the things to do at that sorrowful time were very helpful. We are privileged to be part of the family. David was a kind-hearted guy. He brought a lot of joy while he was with us. We will Editor miss his phone calls. He was al ways the first of our children to call on birthdays, anniversa ries and special days. We were blessed to have him in our life. We loved him and love all of you. Loyal and June Miller Indian name I Just want to express my whole hearted thank you to the people who went all out to give one of my grandsons, Dura Boff, an Indian name. Thank you to the language workers for your kind hearts. You will all be blessed one day. Thank you to the Culture and Heritage De partment, where he works. You will also all be blessed one day. I really enjoyed my day at HeHe that day. Thank you again, Maxine McKinley and all her children Investment idea I have an idea of 100 of us each investing $100 to create after-school jobs for our chil dren, to offer them the oppor tunity of exposure to economic cash flow, how to handle their kitswy to benefit not only them selves but also to retain that dollar in our community of Warm Springs instead of always going to Madras. One idea is to create a water world park owned and operated by Warm Springs teens, creat ing our own business leaders and tycoons. Water. Of all our natu ral resources choosh always was and still is our foremost prayer, blesses, gifts. The ultimate goal is to own barges and ships that will offer future generations in- ternational world trade. Our treaty tribes have always been river skins, not only fishing but I can remember people from all over of all nationalities coming to Celilo to trade. Before my time, even before any other people lived in the U.S.A. our elders bartered on our Colum bia River inchewana clear up into what is now called Canada, us ing the Pacific Ocean too. We possess an inherent right given by our Creator to utilize our inchewana and Pacific Ocean waterway. Water laws are different than land laws. Our treaty tribes have always traded up and down the Pacific Coast and the Columbia River. If we can accomplish even a fraction of this goal, I believe that we would be the first and only tribe to own its own barges, ships, etc. A dream. If we can get it started, then our children will benefit. Bobby Eagleheart An apology Mr. Johnson, I would like to let you know that I deeply re gret my actions I have done to you and your property. There are not enough words to explain my actions. No man in his right would do a thing that I have done. However, I am not ask ing you to forgive me, for I don't think it is forgiveable, but I would like to apologize person ally. And I am going to seek help with my addictions and alcohol problems. Hopefully I will be able to find a positive source of income, whether it be here or out in the world someplace else. But for now I am where people like me wind up when we abuse alcohol andor drugs, Once again I apologize for my actions. Sincerely, Curtis Lamont Brown A thank you On behalf of my two grand sons, C. Michael and Kendall Bobb, I want to thank all those who offered words of comfort and encouragement to them during the funeral of their be loved father Corwin. It really meant a lot to them to know that there were so many caring people. Both grandsons got to meet their three siblings from Wash ington. They were so happy to meet them and know they weren't alone in their grief and loss. They also were happy to learn they were related to the other Washington visitors, and were thrilled to add them to their comforters and relatives. I want to send out extra thanks to my family who came to be supportive to the boys: Selena, Richard, Duran, Amy, Preston, Isaac, Jeannie, Bunny, Carol P., Kathy Smith and Cap tain, plus all CJH's family mem bers for words of comfort. It was a shock to my grandsons to lose their dad so suddenly and so young. They have a great sup port system, so they're doing fine. Myrna Frank On addiction I want to apologize for a let ter I wrote in the Spilyay that said alcohol and drug addiction are not a disease, but a choice. This is a retraction tot that mes sage. Addiction is an incurable, chronic and progressive disease. There remains a choice of whether you want God to free you from it or not. Scriptures clearly point out that drunken ness (1" Cor.6:10; Gal.5:21) or sorceries (greek word phamakeia, drug use) are lusts, which keep one from Heaven. Strep throat is a disease you are until JU.B ,?e dot6Jahd receive a prescrip tion to free you of the bacteria, streptococcus. Addiction is a dis ease you are stuck with and will keep you from Heaven. The AA 12-steps are a God-given pre scription. The first steps tell you to accept a Savior and a Lord. There are words describing addiction in the Bible. One of them is inordinate affection (Col. 3:5). One is lust (4:5). The Greek word synonymous to these words is pathos. Pathos is the diseased condition of the soul out of which the various lusts spring. Addiction is the diseased con dition of this soul. Alcohol and drugs are two of the various lusts that spring up from it. Addiction is the spiritual dis ease because we think we can play doctor on our "self." But we have no control. The invis ible and intangible soulspirit can only be healed with the intan gible and invisible Spirit of God. Addiction is a physical disease because we think we can stop using once we have started, but have no control. Addiction is a mental disease because our minds become obsessed with the desire to use, and though our mind has no control, it becomes "genius" when it comes to that next drink or making an excuse to drink. Note that all three aspects, spiritual, mental and physical portions of the disease have lack of control. Can anyone say, "I have made up my mind and purposed in my heart that my body will never catch a cold?" Hardly. Then, understand that if you are an addict of any sort, that does not make you a bad person, or immoral per son. Stop beating yourself up. You have a disease that you were born with.
