Every summer since my kin dergarten year I went to 4-H Culture Camp and learned im portant skills and lessons as a child growing up. When I became old enough to work I started to volunteer as Counselor In Training. I took two weeks out of my summer to participate with the OSU extension program. It's not only fun, it's a great learning experience being with the younger children. Since I was 5-years-old this was where I went to have a good time, and I still do have excel lent times. Every year is a new begin ning and each year it just gets better and better. While my role is to teach the children, sometimes the children are teaching me. Its weird how they know little interesting facts that you wouldn't even think of until they bring it up. I admit it has its flaws. For instance, some children chose not to listen because of my age, so it becomes hard to get them involved. But some of these kids just need the extra attention because they weren't getting it elsewhere. It feels good when kids come . up to you and ask you ques tions, or confide in you. I enjoy helping them solve problems. Meeting the children at camp reminds me of when I went to my counselor for advice. I liked them because they were really nice. Not only are the children a blast, the other counselors, cooks, teachers, and administra tors arc also a great help. They are always here and willing to improve your skills so you can do a better job. I love the kids and staff I work with. I think volunteering two weeks of my summer is well worth tlr: effort. Toe Ness It is said, "If you can smile when things go wrong, you must have someone in mind to blame." YIKES. Spilyay Speaks Birthday and other wishes... Memorial A memorial dinner in honor of our mother Deanna A. Shadley is sched uled for Saturday, Aug. 2, at 1 p.m. at the Shadley resi dence in Madras, 1751 S.W. Old Culver I lighway. All friends and family are welcome to attend. Sincerely, Anthony, Missy, Jack and Dorothy. Better Support These past few seasons there has been a lack of support given to our young athletes who play Softball and baseball. Also to the coaches, who take the time to coach and work with the kids. Concerns or requests were not considered to help support our young athletes. They lost interest in the sport and turned to the streets. In my opinion the Little League Association never made the extra effort to check what was going on within the league. They said they needed to be informed, just an excuse not to do anything. This year's season turned out to be a mess. When rule changes were made, not all coaches were informed, causing some disagree ments at the games. The same with the paperwork. Not all was turned into the organization before the season began. Why? So as coaches we were pe nalized, and informed that we could not be considered to coach the All Stars or make the All Star selections. So who are the rules set for in this league? The Little League organiza tion tells the Indian coaches one rule and gives a non-Indian a different set of rules to abide by, why? Warm Springs athletes were not given enough represen tation on the All Star selections. The tribes have enough ath letes to make their own All Star teams in all divisions but receive no help locally to push the op tion. In the past the team record was given consideration for the head coach and All Star selec tions. That's when the league played on potential and not other factors. The league was better orga nized and received support from all the communities. We need to get rid of the politics to find solutions to upgrade the league. Get rid of the middleman. Have the coaches work directly with each other, to have better com munication. There's nothing we can do about it this season. The Litde League association already made their ruling, regardless of what was brought to their attention. It's time to quit ignoring the problem and start to getting something done. God bless you all. Speaking up for our youth... Big Rat, coach for 28 years. A thank-you I, Eliza Brown-Jim, would like to thank my family for a very memorable birthday. Love you all, Eliza Brown Jim Takes a village Dear Family and friends of Warm Springs, Because of your generous support during our fundraising events, we raised enough money for Joshua to attend and com pete in the Southern California Instrumental Music Tour 2003 at Disneyland Heritage Festivals. They were able to take the Heritage Festivals highest honor given to the symphonic band. They also placed second during the Portland General Electric SOLV Starlight Parade pre sented by Southwest Airlines, during the Rose Festival upon their return. I know that it sounds cliche but it truly does take a village to raise a child. Thank you for helping and supporting me as I raise mine. Sincerely, Dana (Buffy) Hurtado and sons, Joshua and Paige Smith Apology I would like to apologize to the community and all my friends and family for driving under the influence of alcohol on June 9, 2003.
