Twenty-five years ago
June 16, 1978
For the second time. . .
Warm Springs captures blue
ribbon at Grand Floral
Parade
Plagued with mechanical
problems, the Confederated
Tribes' entry in the Rose Festi
val Grand Floral Parade June
10 limped through the streets
of Portland but was striking
enough to earn a first place in
the category of Civic Groups.
The grace and charm of
Miss Warm Springs Jackie
Estimo and her grandmother
Lucinda Smith more than com
pensated for the jarring effect
of a man's torso emerging from
the fir grove at the rear of the
float and the unceremonious
presence of a tow truck out
front.
The two ladies, who endured
hours of cold and rain to greet
thousands of spectators, re
turned to Warm Springs with a
plaque and ribbon commending
the tribes' second float and sec
ond blue ribbon.
Following the parade theme
of "Hooray for Hollywood" the
forested Warm Springs float
commemorated "Three War
riors," the film made here on the
reservation two years ago. But
again, the float suffered a
malady this time a split person
ality. Change is not easy when it
isn't chosen.
That is why it was difficult
for Warm Springs to say
goodbye to Presbyterian minis
ter Calvin Chinn and his family,
who left this week for a new life
in San Anselmo, California.
The Chinns have chosen to
change directions and we who
became so accustomed to their
friendship must adapt to their
decision and the hole it leaves
in our community. As with any
loss it is painful for a time, but
we find ways to cope and even
grow.
After five and half years in
Warm Springs it was time for
Calvin to return to academia. It
was time for Nancy to surround
herself with fellow painters. It
was time for their kids to find
new challenges in another
school.
Warm Springs girls at the top
The Warm Springs girl's team
coached by Teddy Tanewasha is
holding a strong lead over all in
the Major League Softball Di
vision. There are eight teams in
the division and these girls
played five and won five.
The girls played a game
against Olsen Seed from Madras
and won 10-6, Monday June 12
in Warm Springs.
The name and position of
each team member is: Jaime
Smith, catcher; Felicia Tewec,
catcher; Allie Smith, first base;
Joni Wallulatum, second base;
Becky Rhoan, second base;
Joyce Suppah, second base;
Anita Bryant, third base; Tonya
Mitchell, shortstop; Deannie
Smith, shortstop. Jewell VanPelt,
shortstop;Janell Smith, left field;
Dena Smith, center field; Lovcy
Colwash, right field; Lana Shikc,
pitcher; Sandra Tanewasha,
pitcher; and Lena Mitts, right
field.
