Forest Service proposes Grassland vegetation treatment
The Forest Service is preparing an
environmental report on a proposal to
return Crooked River National Grass
land vegetation closer to its historical
condition, and to graze domestic live
stock where suitable.
Portions of the Grassland are lo
cated across the Metolius Arm of Lake
Billy Chinook from the reservation, and
provide winter range for mule deer that
migrate on off-tribal land.
The Grassland has 20 livestock graz
ing allotments. The majority of the al
lotments have 10-year grazing manage
ment plans in place. Mosdy, these plans
were written between 1985 and 1995.
This environmental report - called
an Environmental Impact Statement,
or EIS - will consider authorizing graz
ing on 15 of the allotments for the next
10-year period, closing three of the al
lotments to livestock grazing and cre
ating forage reserves on two of the
allotments.
