E Coosh EEWA: The way it is Page A Spilyay Tymoo March 6, 2003 Battles and differences close to home By Selena T. Boise Spiff ay Tymoo staff So, what do you think of the world situation? In the world we live in there may be a war about to begin. I think back to the Desert Storm and how I didn't know what was hap pening. I was in another world. I do remem ber the sadness in Warm Springs because many tribal members or community members had gone there. I know of one person, Tashna Hicks, being sent to Iraq. I saw her mother announcing that she's leaving. I saw this girl take an active part in the JROTC Program at Madras High School. In fact I photo graphed her doing color guard at various events in Warm Springs. She has certainly be come a responsible person fol lowing the same direction as family members who served in the Armed Forces. It is also interesting reading about Hester Scott and her ac tivity in the Navy. Her mother said she wanted to travel and she is doing a lot of traveling. I think these girls have a wonderful sense of direction. They're following a path that they laid out for themselves. They are ready and willing to serve America. Though we all give thanks to those who serve our country, we then have our own fighting among the tribes. Or maybe un derhanded dealing, or something similar. Many of you know what I am referring to. That is the " Grand Ronde Tribe offering money to back bonds of a base ball stadium in Pordand in re turn for their placement of a casino in Portland. That is against what they were saying about the Warm Springs Tribes being allowed to have a casino off reservation. Does that mean it's okay now because Grand Ronde might be allowed to? Isn't it enough that their cur rent casino is successful? Do they need more? I think that it is wrong for them to want it all. Warm Springs was a part of the pro cess that assisted these small tribes to become recognized. The Warm Springs tribes to my knowledge are only trying to beome successful in gaming at the Columbia River Gorge where our ancestors survived on the salmon run decades ago. Today our tribes still hold the salmon feast along the Colum bia River at Cclilo Village. To day Warm Spring's tribes still hold ceremony to give thanks for the roots, and berries brought to our land each year. It is today that the young hunter is still recognized with their first kill ceremony. These were things taught to our grandparents, who then passed it on to the younger gen erations to carry on into the fu ture. If 10 years from now these things are still important to our people I will be forever thank ful for those who have passed this on to our children, tribal member or non-tribal member. Ten years from now I will look back upon this disagree ment about casinos and think that it was nothing compared to what our children have learned to keep their culture and tradi tions alive throughout it all. And 10 years from now we will still have tribal members of fering their service to this coun try because we all live here together. Spilyay Speaks Salmon Corps Dear People of the Warm Springs Reservation, The Salmon Corps needs your help and support While the current budget need of $40,000 has been met, an additional $50,000 plus in back payments is still needed to have the pro gram continue on this reserva tioa The government chips in $220,000 per year and requires that the tribes pay $40,000. These monies keep 16 young adults in an educational program where they learn job skills and those without GED's have a chance to earn one. At the end of the 1,700 hours each participant receives a $4,700 college scholarship. Salmon Corps is an important of Natural Resources and is used by most of the depart ments. Ask yourself, "How many people have I known who went through the Salmon Corps?" You'll probably be able to think of a few. The Umatilla, the Nez Perce, the Sho-Ban, the Yakima, the North Sound and Pordand have supported their Salmon Corps program. Please show that the Warm Springs, Wasco, and the Paiute people support and value this program. Please call (541) 553-3233 to pledge your support A thank you In memory of Inez McKinley. Abe Schuster Apology To whom it may concern: I am truly sorry for the ter rible incident that took place on the 25,h of January. I had no grounds for doing what I did to you all. What I did was totally uncalled for and out of line. This lettet could not tell you how ashamed at myself I'm feeling right now. I would just like to say I'm truly sorry to my two grandma's, my mother and my little sister and my homeboys. I also would like to say I'm sorry to all of the officers that had to deal with me. I really hope that all of you can forgive me for that unfortunate incident, be cause if I could go back in time and take it all back, I would. I love you mama. Vic all loved Dad Grampa very much. Co-ed Tournament On Feb. 15-16 we played in a 12-team tourney held at White Swan Middle School, which was an eight-man roster of four boys and four girls. Our roster consisted of: Cap tain Redskywalker Suppah, Cap tain Rosey Twostarrs Suppah, Carel Swallow, Shoni Schimmel, Jode Schimmel, Isiah Moses, Aja Maldanado, and Anthony Maldanado. The first listed are our son, daughter, nephew, and grand children. Five of the players played together in 2002. Shoni, Jude, Isiah are Bob Eagleheart's grandchildren. Anthony and Aja are Willie Salem's grandchildren. All represent Simnasho. We are grateful to the fami lies who support the children, allowing them to play together as a team. When we're not trav eling, they play for other teams, giving them more experience and making them stronger in their abilities. Also, I give a big cheer to those who put together these youth tournaments for the teams to participate. Keep up the good hard work. It's tough to put on any tournament. The cost of the awards, referees, use of facilities, concession gate, ratdes and entry fees to make ends meet. It's like police work or politics, no one is ever satis fied. Someone has to complain about something. So don't let the gripes get to you all. It's because of you folks some kids have some event to look forward to each year. God Bless you all. I know what you go through, for I put on many a tournament myself. ,' ' By Big Rat Suppah Two poems Mrs. Lucille F. And many a fail ure turns about, when we might have won, had we stuck it out. Don't give up though the pace seems slow, you may suc ceed with another blow. Success is failure turned inside out, the silver tent of the clouds of doubt. And you never can tell how close you are, it may be near when it seems so far. So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit, it's when things seem worse, that you must not quit. When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, when the road you're trudging, seems all up hill, when the funds are low and the debts are high, and you want to smile, but you have to sigh, when care is press ing you down a bit, rest if you must, ask God for help and daily guidance. Rejoice for life, but don't give up, and quit! See MEMORIAL on 8 ing you of what the National FSA American Indian Credit Outreach initiative can do for Native Americans. To give you a brief update, I have found that although the letters reached many depart ments, response was low com pared to going to tribal offices and making face-to-face contact and disseminating program in formation at high traffic areas. So far I have made face-to-face contact with the Confeder ated Tribes of Warm Springs, Grand Ronde, Siletz, and Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw out reach office Florence. Other tribes I am contacting are the Coquille, Cow Creek Band of Umpqua Indians, the Klamath tribes, Umatilla and Burns Paiute. Previous records indicate that in the past, Farm Service Agency applications and enquiry have been low. In the three months that I have been employed here with the initiative, I have doubled the contacts and have spent every effort possible to ensure our fellow Native American Indians are aware of the services that the Farm Service Agency has to offer. I have found that Rural Youth Loans are of great inter est to many people that I have spoken to because the loans do not have to be tied to agricul ture. Youth are able to obtain a loan to start almost any type of business. Operating Loans and Begin ning Loans have been the most requested type of service re quested from adults.
