THE CONFEDERATED TRIBES LANGUAGE LESSON-

r In the last issue we saw two action words: "to see" and "to go". Let's look at the action words "to sing" and "to dance".

Again, here is a break-down of one of the verbs,
"to sing". Using the Kiksht knowledge you have
learned so far, try the excercises at the end using
the verb "to dance".

In future we (us two) fut. we (two of us) at
sing longhouse
We will sing at the longhouse.
Just like last week, we notice some com
monalities between all of the sentences above:
(1 ) The first and last letters of 'a' indicate the
future tense.
(2) Just inside the first 'a', we have fixed
choices: n, m, a, i, t, I, and t.
(3) The letters of 'gl' show up consitantly to
indicate direction or place. (Hint: These letters
won't show up in every verb, such as "to dance".)
(4) Finally, sometimes we see a 'u' letter, as in
the last issue, inserted just after part 2, which
indicates either a relative place in time or a direc
tion and placement (such as towards, in, or at).
See if you can fill in the blanks of the first
few sentences below, making the same sentences
as above using the verb "to dance". Then, look at
the last several sentences and see if you can
translate them!
Alma axka ---uwichgw- idattqtba itqwti
She will dance at the longhouse.
Alma alxaika --x--wichgw- idattqtba
itqwti.
We (all of us) will dance at the longhouse.
Alma ---wichgw- idattqtba itqwti.
will dance at the longhouse.
Now that you've done so well with the ones
above, let's see if you can translate these sen
tences into English:
Maika alma amuwichgwa idattqtba itqwti.
Alma yaxka ayuwichgwa idattqtba itqwti.
Alma taichka atuwichgwa idattqtba itqwti.
