Special
people, and
special time
By Selena Boise
Who is that special someone
in your life? Who will get that
extra special attention on the
Valentine's Day this year?
This time of year, just before
the spring season sets in, is when
you remind
someone in
your life how
you feel about
them.
I made it
through the stressful holidays
this winter and now I am ready
to start this fresh New Year with
a fresh new outlook on life.
That fresh new outlook in
cludes my family, my husband
and all that surrounds these im
portant people.
I hope to make them all feel
special on Valentine's Day this
year. Not just that day but all
year.
Hearing of the tragedy this
week and the person waiting to
hear word about her husband
and child makes me realize that
family is important.
There was also sadness
throughout the nation due to the
space shuttle Columbia. This
tragedy took the lives of people
who had families themselves.
We shouldn't wait until
Valentine's Day to make our
loved ones feel loved. Love
should be expressed each and
every day in our lives because
there may come a day when you
can't show love to someone be
cause they will not be there.
Love shouldn't be taken for
granted in our lives, especially
for our children, who need ove
and trust. Give them a hug, buy
them a gift, or do something
special for them. Don't wait until
it's too late.
Keep positive thoughts within
yourself when you go home and
see your loved ones after a long
day at work or school. Let them
know that you are glad they are
here to greet you when you get
home. They have to endure a
long day at school as well.
Warm Springs will be meet
ing and greeting all the visitors
at the Lincoln's Birthday Pow
wow. I usually enjoy going there
to watch the dancing.
Sometimes at these large
gatherings you see familiar faces
from your past. Friends that you
met at other powwows.
On another subject.
The big pool tournament is
coming up at the Chinook
Winds Casino. The first time I
went there I was amazed at the
pool tables.
There were close to seventy
five tables and more than 500
pool players from the North
west. I was scared and nervous
and didn't shoot all that great
but it was fun.
I went there with my friends
Patches, and Jeri. I was on their
league team, and they taught me
how to play nine-ball.
They were fun to travel with
because we laughed and had a
good time. And we met up with
Karla while we were there and
she always has a good joke to
tell.
It was that year that Karla
won the novice division cham
pionship, that was so neat to
watch. She received a plaque
and $500.
Well, I'm going to go and
watch a good match in Bend this
week between my former team
mates against another team.
There's sort of a challenge be
tween these two teams. I want
to be there.
I believe that my former
team will win.
But then, that's only my opin

Thank you
Dear family, friends, health
care workers and community
members,
The last couple of years have
been especially heartbreaking
for my family. In August 2001,
my niece Nikki Courtney died
unexpectedly. In March 2002,
my mother Catherine Courtney
died. Seven lonely and lost
months later my father Terry
Courtney Sr., followed. One
week later, my niece Nevada
Beymer joined them.
I want to thank High Lookee
Lodge, IHS, Mountain View
Hospital, St. Charles Hospital
and Bel-Air Colonial Funeral
Home for the loving care given
my family. Thanks to our
friends for all the prayers, hugs,
flowers, kind thoughts, gifts and
food. Most all, thanks to my
husband and brothers and sis
ters for holding together through
it all; and to my three daughters
who gave up work and school
to be where needed the most.
You've all been so kind and con
siderate, thank you. Sincerely,
Mavis Shaw

Fund-raiser
It is with great pleasure that
I write this letter to thank all of
the students and staff members
at Jefferson County Middle
School for their thoughtfulness
and generosity. The students
participated in a fundraiser to
purchase new PE equipment
that was lost during the recent
fire that destroyed the Warm
Springs Elementary gym. The
total amount dedicated to the
replacement fund was
$2,010.54. This amount will
help purchase new playground
and PE equipment so the stu
dents at Warm Springs Elemen
tary can continue learning new
skills and maintain their fitness
potential.
The students of Jefferson
County Middle School should
be proud and commended for
their efforts and concern for
others that will someday be a
part of their school.
Hold your heads high and
remember that what you have
done will make a remarkable
difference for the students of
the school. Sincerely,
Michael Osborne, PE
teacher, Warm Springs Elemen
tary. ,
Bad calls
To the editor of the Spilyay

I, Vernon Smith Sr., am writ
ing this letter to the editor on
behalf of the Men's 6-foot and

sponsored by the tribes.
I think it is about time to get
new officials to referee the bas
ketball games. One referee was
a parole officer, and another
referee was a former police of
ficer. All the referees are from the
Warm Springs Reservation; they
are all hometown referees. It is
too bad that the referees did not
call any fouls when the player

games to get to the champion

in the championship game,
which was the sixth game they

I understand the other teams

team has won three out of four
championships in the four tour

Child abuse
In recent weeks there have
been a number of children ad
mitted to the hospital for alco
hol poisoning.
These have been children as
young as 12, with blood alcohol
levels as high as 0.27 percent.
Putting that in perspective, a
fully-grown adult is defined as
legally drunk at less than one
third that degree of intoxication.
But this is not an issue of legal
or illegal.
This is an issue of life and
death.
Drinking this amount of al
cohol can kill an individual by
shutting down that area in the
brain that controls the person's
breathing.
Add an automobile or a
weapon, stir in additional drugs,
multiply by the number of other
intoxicated individuals, child or
adult, and the situation becomes
even more deadly.
However, these children are
not driving to the store and
buying this alcohol on their
own. They are being provided
with the alcohol directly, or al
lowed easy access to it. This is
child abuse.
It is a grave public health
danger to this community. "Pub
lic health" is defined in Webster's
Dictionary as "the art and sci

ence dealing with the protection
and improvement of commu
nity health by organized com
munity effort, and including pre

and social science."
I couldn't have said it better
myself.
There is a segment in our
community that is not being
protected from, and in fact,
appears to be targeted for de
struction. I have heard stated in this
community and I have read on
these pages that "Our children
are our future," "Our children
are out greatest resource."
If someone locally were to
be caught setting fires in the for
ests, poaching game, embezzling
money from the casino, they
would be quickly and sternly
punished.
And yet this, our greatest re
source, our future is being wan
tonly squandered.

Our people
Our Warm Springs people's
survival is at a crisis point. Des
perate, so desperate that our
leaders are grasping at straws,
wasting millions upon millions
of our Warm Springs people's
limited resources, gambling on
Mr. Governor to honor his
word. Please, how many white
guys do you know that have
ever, ever told our people the
truth our brought anything to
offer our people besides sick
ness, pain, sorrow, tears, death.
In my lifetime I have met a few
non-Indians who have honored
their word or offered our people
anything. I respect these few
people. Mr. Corolla, new den
tist, offered me a set net to catch
salmon with no apparent con
tingency. A first in my life. I'm
always amazed how our Creator
brings honorable good human
beings into one's life at the most
crucial times.
Do away with all the credit

create a memorix accounting
system that actually works. Fire

don't have the backbone to do
their job, fire these non-tribal
people that 8-5 it and don't do
anything for our people anyway.

Happy Anniversary
Parents are very special
people to each other and their
children.
Through the years, you have
shown this to us by giving us
love, by always being there
whether it be to comfort me in
times of need or to share with
us, our happiness.
It is such a special feeling to
know that we do have parents
as wonderful as the two of you,
whom we love and respect very
much.
And yet, because feelings are
so very hard to put into words,
we don't tell you often enough
how very much we really do
need you and we don't thank
you often enough for being the
two beautiful parents that you
have been to us.
So on this day, on this very
special day, we would like to say
I lappy birthday to Daniel

millions of our limited resources.
Myself, I wouldn't lose any
sleep firing these 8-5 carpetbag
gers. Let these jerks work for
their own people, neighbors,
community, instead of living off
the blood of our people while
the majority of our people con
tinue to live in abject poverty,
jobless. Our children like new
shoes too. Our children like good
food too. I don't know what is
exactly wrong but I do know
that it is not right. Too many
people are suffering, dying, un
necessarily. Bobby Eagleheart
Can't believe
To friends and family,
I hope you all had a better
holiday than me. I know in life
everyone has their own prob
lems, trials and tribulations to
deal with day to day. As for
myself, I spend most of my time
in blissful ignorance, time goes
faster that way.
I've spent 20 some months
in a state institution here or
there paying for a crime I did
commit, yes me and no one else.
I get some mail from the rez
and newspapers, so I know what
I need to know. I haven't seen
anyone since I left county jail,
but it's a long drive at least cps
says so, when I ask about a visit
with my son. Whatever.
One day my little inmate ex
istence was messed up. I got a
phone call saying my father's
gone, what? Nah! Must be a
mistake.
I ask about a viewing, DOC
says see if your family can vid
eotape it (what, it's not a pow
wow) because Silva you can't go,
oh but this was after they let me
think I could.
After that time I'm on auto
matic pilot because for now this
is my world and it's easier if you
play nice in the sandbox. The
Pioneer comes and I read the
obituary, why didn't I survive
my father. Ouch, that hurt.
I don't care if no one writes
(I've nothing to say). I don't care
if no one visits (I forgot how to
act). So I'm not looking for pity,
but what's up with forgetting me?
That was cold.
Baby girl, Little Jug, Jr., that
was me. I tried to let it go but I
can't, I can't believe I was for

(Wyno) Williams' daughter.
that yes, parents are very spe
cial people and none could ever
be as beautiful as the two of you
arc to us.
Mom and Dad, we love
you. The Frank Stublcs.
Happy belated birthday to

thing. Bobby
