The 2002 Rez Car Parade
T t was a chilly drive on Sat
urday morning for Boo Boo
Blodgett, but it was worth it.
Blodgett's car - a 1977
Cordova - has automatic win
dows, but the windows no longer
roll up. In fact the Cordova - a
luxury car in its day - also has
no hood, among other problems.
On the drive into Warm
Springs from his home at
Sidwalter Flats, Blodgett had a
flat tire, needed a jump-start and
ran out of gas.
He arrived on Indian Time
for the Rez Car Parade, just in
time to take first place. He won
$50, a tarp to serve as a new
hood, floor mats, and assorted
other car products.
"His is a genuine Indian car,"
said Captain Moody, who helped
organize and judge the Third
Annual Rez Car Parade.
Taking second place in the
competition was Denise Picard,
whose teal-colored Camaro was
conspicuous for its passenger
side window, which was actually
just a sheet, as the glass one had
been broken out.
Taking third place in the pa
rade was Tillie Moody, who was
driving her powwow van, fully
loaded in preparation for the
Burns powwow. Fourth-place
went to Noney Garrison, driv
ing a rez pickup with rez dog.
"A true rez pickup needs a
rez dog," said Charlotte
Herkshan, parade organizer and
judge.
Following the parade, held
Oct. 12, the group of partici
pants gathered for an early lunch
at the Elmer Quinn Park. The
lunch featured excellent home
made potato soup by Char
Herkshan.
Herkshan started the Rez Car
Parade three years ago, as a re
sponse by local residents to the
Columbus Day holiday.
The spirit of the parade is
one of humor and indepen
dence. "It was started to bring
some laughter," said Captain
Moody.
The official scoring card,
used for judging the parade en
tries, includes the following criteria:

BooBoo Blodgett (above) takes tirst place in the Rez Car Parade. At right,
Denise Picard receives her second-place prizes. Below, Captain Moody, an
organizer and judge of the parade entries, is ready to give the first-place cash
award. The money came in a "water-proof reusable wallet," also known as a
plastic ziplock bag.
Missing window, 5 points.
Mismatched tires, 7 points. Use
of duct tape, 6 points. Missing
hood, 4 points, Missing bumper,
3 points.
Another factor is uniqueness,
from "looks normal" to "one
of a kind." And the overall ve
hicle body, from "ready for sale"
to "ready for the junk yard."
Noise is also a factor, from
"quiet as a mouse" to "loud as
a tank."
Warm Springs Forest Prod
ucts Industries provided the
prize money. Other prizes were
contributed by Ron and Viola
Govenor, Les and Perthina
White, Leland "Chief" Thomp
son family, and "Lukameen
Queen's" family.
