Editor's note: This is the second
in a series of articles featuring tribal mem
ber athletes.
. The new school year began just
a few weeks ago, but the 2002 Ma
dras High School varsity girls vol
leyball team has already seen an
eventful season.
The White Buffalo girls began
with league victories, despite injury
to a key player, Cyrille Mitchell. At
the same time freshman Susan
Ahern has done a great job for the
team while Mitchell has been recov
ering. The girls varsity team this year
is featuring three members of the
Confederated Tribes of Warm
Springs. The players are Mitchell,
Ahern and senior Natasha Edwards,
who has become an outstanding
defensive player.
"She's one of those players who
works extremely hard all the time,"
Coach Patti Wright said of Edwards.
"She's very dedicated to volley
ball, and has worked hard to become
an excellent defensive player in the
back court. She's always looking for
ways to improve. She has a very
good work ethic."
About the 2002 White Buffalo
girls Wright said, "The whole team
gets along very well. It's great to be
a part of team with girls who work
this hard."
As the new season was just start
ing, Cyrille Mitchell, a junior at the
high school, broke two ribs during

The 2002 Kah-Nee-Ta fall run event,
10K and 2-mile, is set for Saturday, Oct.
12. Registration begins at 8 a.m. on that
date, with the races beginning at 10 a.m.
Registration rate is $8 for tribal
members. This includes a t-shirt.
Awards are medals given to the top
three finishers in all age divisions for
both males and females.
There will also be a door prize raffle.
Both races begin and end at the Kah-Nee-Ta
Village front gate.
Course is an out and back, on all
blacktop pavement.
Water stations will be located along
the course.

"She is just now returning to the
squad after a pretty severe injury," said
Coach Wright. "She's a tough kid, and
we're looking forward to getting her
healthy for competition."
Working her way back into the start
ing lineup, Mitchell at first played just
for serving, as she could not risk hav
ing to dive to the floor for a ball, said
Wright. Otherwise, Mitchell plays at the
front.

Pool will be closed
The Kah-Nee-Ta Village pool has set
the dates for pool closure while a new
paint job is applied.
The dates are as follows:
September 23 through Oct. 10, the
pool will be closed for painting and
maintenance.
The pool will reopen on Oct. 11.
The closure will include the Recreation
Department and facilities.

"That says a lot about her, to be on
the varsity," said Wright. "She has a lot
of natural athletic ability. She jumps
very well. I had not anticipated having
her play in a starting role, but with
Cyrille's injury, Susan has done a great
job of filling in at the net."
Ahern has been playing volleyball
since the seventh grade at the middle
school. She is the only freshman on the
high school girls varsity team. "It's ex
citing," she said. "And we have a lot of
fun together." Ahern's parents are Fran
and Dan Ahern.
Walk breaks set
Trying to find time to fit in fitness?
Take a walk break, starting now through
Oct. 28.
The morning break is from 10 to
10:15 a.m. at the ECE and the Health
and Wellness Center.
The afternoon break is from 3 to
3:15 p.m., at the Tribal Administration
and Housing buildings.
Upcoming walks are set for Friday,
Sept. 20, Monday, Sept. 23, Monday,
Sept. 30, and Monday, Oct. 7.
Research has found that three 10
minute walks a day are just as good as
one 30-minute walk.

results noted
The Madras High School cross
country team hosted an invitational
tournament Saturday, Sept. 7.
There were 177 runners in the girls
event and 197 in the boys event.
St. Mary's won the invitational in the
girls event with a score of 28, while
Bend won the boys event with a score
39.
Madras girls placed 14th with a
score of 624, and their first runner
came in at number 49. The boys fin
ished in 12 with a score of 461, wuh
their top runner coming in at number
65. The first three runners for Madras
were in the top 100.
Following St Mary's in the girls event
were Mt. View 90, Sisters 156, The
Dalles 157, Bend 163, Aloha 204,
Scappoose 299, Myrde Point 253, Sum
mit 267, Newberg 308, Burns 385,
Estacada 493, St. Helens 552, Madras
624, Wahtonka 649. Two teams, Crook
County and LaPine, only had four fin
ishers. Following Bend in the boys event
were Mt. View 67, Newberg 104, Sis
ters 142, The Dalles 198, Summit 222,
Scappoose 225, Crook County 264, St.
Helens 276, Aloha 326, Burns 457,
Madras 461, Wahtonka 472, Myrtle
Point 494, Mt. Bachelor 885.
Friday, Sept. 6, the cross country
team traveled to Redmond for an invi

team is 1-2
The Madras High School White
Buffalo football squad lost to the Sis
ters Oudaws last week, 47-14. But the
week before Madras defeated LaPine,
10-2.
By posting a win early in the season,
the White Buffalos already have a bet
ter record than last year, when they won
no games on the field.
The win against LaPine ended a 19
game losing streak that began in the
2000 football season.
The loss against Sisters, a high-ranking
team in the state, was the first home
game for the White Buffalos this year.
The next home game is this Friday
evening, Sept. 20. Game time is 7 p.m.
They then travel to Gladstone on
Sept. 20.
The Madras team now has a record
of 1-2.
Golf tourney
to benefit museum
The Museum at Warm Springs next
weekend is hosting its annual benefit
golf tournament.
The tournament, Saturday, Sept. 28,
is a four-person scramble shotgun start
at the Kah-Nee-Ta Resort Golf Club.
Entry fee is $75 per person, $300
per team. The entry fee includes green
fees and lunch.
All proceeds help The Museum at
Warm Springs fulfill its educational
mission. The event will also include great
prizes, said Dora Goudy, development
coordinator at the museum. For infor
