Four young Warm Springs
women recently attended the
2002 National Unity Confer
ence, held this year in Palm
Springs, Calif. The annual five
day event brings together Na
tive American young people
from across the U.S.
The Unity Conference pro
vides training in leadership for
young tribal members. This
goal is accomplished through
youth council workshops,
talks by inspiring speakers, as
well as cultural exchange activi
ties. At this year's conference,
representing the youth of the
Confederated Tribes of Warm
Springs, were Prenencia and
Jenny VanPelt, and Raeanne
and Gladys Graybael.
Gladys served as chaperon.
Sarah Frank of Victims of
Crime also served as chaperon
for this conference.
Themes of the conference
were youth drug- and alcohol
abuse prevention, leadership,
and issues facing today's teen
agers, said Prenencia Van Pelt.
Over 1,600 young Native
American people attended the
conference.
