Patriotism chosen
as theme of event
The theme of Warm Springs

will be marking its twelfth anni
versary. "We invite seniors from all
over the Northwest," said Greeley.
"And I'm told this year we may

School: cost-cutting
measures under discussion
(Continued from page 1)
"As much as I do not like it," said
Manion, "I believe that without pas
sage of this measure, we are looking
at significant budget cuts this year."
The school district for the present
year had a budget of $24 million,
which also appears to be the amount
the district will be working with for
the upcoming budget.
If the budget stays the same from
one year to the next, then that repre
sents a budget cut, because there is
no budget increase to match the cost
of living increase, said Manion.
This is the first time in his seven
years on the 509-J board that the dis
trict is facing such a cut, he said.
"We're facing an uncertain future
in terms of the budget for the next
school year," said Manion. 'The pic
ture will become clearer in May."
Meanwhile, the board has been
discussing means of addressing bud
get matters. For instance, it is possible

that the district may adopt a pay-to-play
sports policy.
Athletes at Madras High School
would pay $50 per sport, and at the
middle school, $25 per sport.
Along with pay-to-play sports,
many other school budget-cutting
suggestions arc on the table for dis
cussion, Manion said.
With 80 percent of the district
budget dedicated to personnel, there
may be a reduction in employment.
However, he said, "everyone on the
budget task force is committed to
maintaining a low teacher-to-student
ratio." Maintaining the low ratio for
the coming year is one reason why
Manion is leaning in favor of Mea
sure 13.
Asked whether the budget situa
tion could delay construction of the
new Warm Springs Elementary
School, Manion said, "The school
board is committed to the new
school."
