t E Coosh EEWA: The way it is Pge 4 Spilyay Tymoo December 13, 2001 Spilyay Speaks Remember Pearl Harbor r "V r f-V I J On December 7, 2001, there were services held at Pearl Harbor, on the USS Arizona memorial, as survivors of that horrible event were on hand to tell their story and pay tribute to all their Comrades who paid the price of their lives during that devastating day that will live in Infamy. The day when the Japanese Umpire made its sneak attack that caught the United States completely off guard, a well-planned move on the part of Japan was in the making that changed the whole course of events in the lives of all Americans, when they attacked Pearl Harbor, where the American Fleet was anchored. The damage was very costly to the United States and many, many lives were lost without a fight. The battleship USS Arizona was sunk in just minutes where hundreds of lives were lost when they went down with the ship. Today their bodies arc still in the hull and the memorial was erected in their honor. Yep! It was a cool crisp day here in the United States many years ago and I can remember that day quite well. On that Sunday morning we were listening to the radio, because in those days there was no TV. My oldest sister liked to listen to the pop tunes, and that was the days of old "Frank Sinatra," on how he wooed the girls and made them scream when he sang the hit tunes like "That Old Black Magic," and others. And that was when all the teens done the "Jitter Bug," to the tune of "Chattonooga Choo Choo." As we were listening to the radio when all of a sudden the station was interrupted when they made the announcement that the Japanese made the attack on Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawaii. Silence fell all over the household and that scared the dickens out of me. It was a real big surprise because all eyes were focused on the European area at time where the war was raging. At that time the Japanese were on a rampage in the South Pacific where they were taking country after country completely taking over Indo-China. They were also taking one island after another and to hear of how cruel they were to their prisoners of war. How the Ameri cans lost the battle of Bataan. To me it was frightening to think what might happen if they would invade the mainland, it was very upsetting to everyone. Back in those days we used to have a movie once a week here in Warm Springs, and that was the only method we had to see what was taking place. The newsreel was the only way we could see what was happening all over the world. Everything changed when the U.S. went into war. The draft was taking all the young men. And the War plants took a lot of people where a lot of women went to the shipyards to become welders. Around here on the "REZ" there were only the old guys and the young kids. It was awful to see my older brother and his friends being drafted into the service and leaving for the Military Service. It was a horrible feeling and frightening to think what might happen if the war came to America. Today I can sympathize with the old remaining survivors of that unpleasant day many years ago. That day, December 7, 1941. The day that drew the United States into World War II. The day of September 11, 2001, brought back a lot of memories to those survivors of the 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. And what a surprise attack can do to a nation. -Sid Miller Editor's note Spilyay Tymoo welcomes letters from its readers. Thank you, Cascade Locks, for welcoming the tribal leaders warmly. According to "A History of the McQuinn Strip", when Lewis and Clark arrived here in 1805 Clark wrote "we were received with great kindness by Indians from the mouth of the John Day River all down the Columbia River to the Cascade Mountains." Their land ran from the Cascade Mountains eastward to the Blue Mountains and southward from the Cascade Mountains to our present-day Bend. The salmon from the Columbia were their main source of food along with berries, roots and hunting. White settlers started com ing in taking their land along the Columbia. The Indians objected so the U.S. government sent Gen. Joel Palmer to meet with the Indian agent to sign a treaty. The Indians objected to the treaty as some of them were now farming but they were told they had no choice. The treaty was signed in 1965, giving the Indians 640,000 acres of dry, barren, desert-like coun try and taking lp million acres of prime land along the Columbia. They retained the right to fish and hunt and were supposed to get a lot of other things which they never got, as the president spent the money as he saw fit. Even Gen. Palmer wrote the government saying, "The consid eration paid to the Indians is believed to be the lowest amount adequate to meet their necessities. They are still be harassed by the whites, even the Snake Indians, who stole their women and children." ; In 1866 the Army began a massive campaign for soldiers, they asked the Confederated Tribes for help. They did so and performed with conspicu ous gallantry. In 1873 the Army again called on the Indians for help where they saved one (group) of soldiers from massacre - losing five of their own men and many wounded. , Having received none of the prom ised per capita payments they were still trying to scratch a living out of the desert-life land allotted them; in 1879 the government started sending Paiute prisoners to the reservations giving them even more mouths to feed. During World War II they en tered into a contract with the govern ment for the sale of some of their tim ber making them a per capita to the present day of $720 a year. Now most of their cutting has been stopped. In 1958 the government destroyed their ancient fishing ground at Celilo Falls along with their sacred things? No, they just took them. It has been almost 200 years since the white man came and invaded the V B m&x urns'. 'J'; Indians' land and have treated them terrible ever since. It is sad to me that we can be friendly to every other na tionality and treat them as friends and business associates and yet "some people" still want to treat the Indians terribly. America is still a land of free dom and choice, is it not? It should be their choice whether or not they build. Your choice or not to patron ize. Nadine Mathis Hood River ..' v . Verse 20 So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men, that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground. Verse 22 And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; And I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone. Verse 23 Thus I will mag nify myself and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am the Lord. Did you notice in verse 22 God is the one that throws pestilence back in the terrorist's face? That is God and God alone who defeat them? Ain't no 7 Calvary to the rescue, no Lone Ranger, not John Wayne, not JFK & not George W. Bush nor America!
