Tribes acquire 9,000-acre Wagner Ranch property
P.ige 9
Land is located
south of Clarno
The Confederated Tribes of
Warm Springs acquired the
Wagner Ranch, a 9,000-acre
property located south of
Clarno, on September 4, 2001.
This acquisition increases
the total acreage of the Pine
Creek Ranch, which was pur
chased in 1999 for conserva
tion purposes, to over 34,000
acres.
Bonneville Power Adminis
tration is funding the purchase
and management of both prop
erties, as part of their mitiga
tion responsibilities for fish
and wildlife habitat inundated
by the Columbia River dams.
Wagner Ranch was one of
the few remaining large parcels
of private land bordering the
lower mainstem John Day
River.
With the addition of
Wagner Ranch, Pine Creek
Ranch provides a nearly con
tiguous corridor of protected
wildlife habitats, including two
units of the John Day Fossil
Wagner Ranch po
tentially supplies habi
tats for at least 23
animal and plant
species that are listed as
sensitive, threatened or
endangered.
Beds National Monument and
BLM Spring Basin, Sutton
Mountain, and Pats Cabin
Wilderness Study Areas.
Management of Wagner
Ranch by the Confederated
Tribes will include allowing
passive recovery of disturbed
areas where possible, noxious
weed control, and active resto
ration where needed.
The Tribes will coordinate
and consult with local land
owners including adjacent
property owners and county,
state and federal agencies on
management plans and coop
erative needs.
Wagner Ranch potentially
supplies habitats for at least 23
animal and plant species that
are listed as sensitive, threat
ened or endangered.
The property also provides
important habitat for big game
animals.
Protection of this habitat
should enhance values of the
Wild and Scenic River, and
benefit anadromous fish, in
cluding summer steclhead,
spring clunook salmon, and
lamprey.
Tribal and Public access to
Pine Creek Ranch is permit
ted, with restrictions in place
to minimize impacts to ranch
resources.
The Wagner Ranch portion
of the property will primarily
be accessible by horseback
through Pine Creek Ranch or
from existing BLM campsites
along the John Day River. No
public roads access the prop
erty. Access on Wagner Ranch
will be available beginning in
2002.
