Wellness Center sponsoring Harvest Festival For Patches '' ' "" t ..f (5!; , The front yard of the Warm Springs Community Center will be the scene later this month of the Country Mar vest Festival. The event, sponsored by the Com munity Wellness Center, is set for 1:30 to 4 p.m., Sunday Oct. 14. Families from Warm Springs and all other areas of Central Central are invited to participate by displaying (juilts and crafts of all types. Any local fresh fruit and vegetables vendors arc encouraged to participate. A scarecrow contest will be held, along with other fall contests. Food booths arc encouraged with the display of a food handler's card. Since the event is being held on i Sun day, the event will end with a "good oP Sunday go to mectin'" sing-along. V 1 A Golf tournament to benefit museum i t A' ' C rJ 1 .. w-;-. , : v ,- ."33 .... , v .Mr. ,.. fv.:..- r Friends and family last week held a fundraiser for Rita "Patches" Marchand, who has traveled to Seattle for six weeks of cancer treatment. The fundraiser last week at the Agency Longhouse was an Indian taco meal and bake sale. In the photograph is Patches' daughter Tia Bea, by the pies and other bakes goods that were for sale. The Museum at Warm Springs will be having a benefit folf tournament on October 13, 2001. They will be using a 4-pcrson scramble with a 10 a.m. shot gun start. Golf registration forms can be picked up at the museum. Prizes for the first three places will be awarded. A raffle will be held in conjunction with the golf tournament. Among the items to be raffled include a men's beaded bolo tie, pine needle basket, beaded items, golf balls, golf items, and many more. Raffle tickets arc $1 each or six for $5. Tickets on sale now at the Museum Gift Shop and from the museum staff.! Another activity includes a chili con test. Prizes will be awarded for the first three places. Call the museum to sign up for the chili contest. Make sure you have a name for your spiciest, hottest chili in the Pacific Northwest. Bend Library seeks local artwork for exhibit The Bend library is planning an ex hibit of art works by Warm Springs tribal members. "A group of us from the library art committee visited the tribal art show, and we were very impressed with the artwork," said Kay Bauman, who is co ordinating the show for the library. Bauman said she is seeking tribal members who are interested in having their artwork shown at the library. The library has a few cases and shelves for three-dimensional artwork, and space for about 40 to 50 two-dimensional art works that would hang on the walls of the second floor of the library. Classifieds Fire and Safety hoping to recruit volunteers The Warm Springs Fire and Safety Department is recruiting new volunteers. The department now has only half a dozen volun teers, but would like to increase that number to between 12 and 15. In its current campaign to re cruit new volunteers, the Fire and Safety Department is providing some profile information on the people who work at the depart ment. This effort is intended to help the Warm Springs commu nity become more familiar with the Fire and Safety personnel, said Fire and Safety Chief Dan Martinez. Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a Fire and Safety volunteer should call 553 1634. Personnel profiles Brad Rumbarger is a full-time fircmcdic and shift supervisor at Warm Springs Fire and Safety. He is an EMT-Intermediate and Firefighter I. He completed his EXIT training through COCC. Brad is also a haz ardous materials technician and has re ceived specialized training in search and rescue, is a high-angle rescue instructor, and swift-water rescue technician. The most reward ing part of his work is going home and feeling good at hav ing done his job well. The hardest part of being a fire medic, he said, "to see people fall back into harmful patterns and not help themselves when there's so much more out there." He was led into the fireEMS field at the age of 15, w hen he had to administer CPR to his best friend. On a personal note, Rumbarger has been married to Cinthia for 14 years. They live in Crooked River Ranch with their two sons, Ethan, 1 1, and Elijah, 4. Rumbarger enjovs working as a C ' i 1 Ax x general contractor, volunteering with the Boy Scouts in Redmond, and being Search and Rescue co ordinator for Jefferson County. He is also a part-time firemedic at Crooked River Ru ral Fire Protection District. Brad Rumbarger preven- Karla Bagley-Tias is currently the training tion officer at Warm Springs Fire and Safety, where she has been employed since 1987. She is an EMT-Paramedic and Firefighter II. Karla is also a hazardous mate rials technician, and has received specialized training in search and rescue, law enforcement, and has also taken some fire administration classes at WOSU. The best part of her work, she said, "is having the ability and knowledge to save lives." P '"'""'Ifc V Karla Bagley-Tias And the worst part, "seeing a lot of things that you can't do any- thing about." She first be came in terested in E M T -paramedic work she had a child who suf fered from a seizure dis order as an infant, which required Bagley-Tias to call for an ambu lance. This experience led to her taking a First Aid class, and then to volunteering at Fire and Safety, which evolved into a career in the FireEMS field. Karla is a tribal member, who has been married to Oswald "Bear" Tias for nine years. She has two children, Tiana, 17, and Justin, 15. Her interests are playing pool, softball, hunting and camping.
