Reunion scheduled for September The WWII, U.S. Navy Armed Guard and Merchant Marines "Northwest Passage" group will have a reunion September 18-20 at the Phoenix Inn, Bend, Oregon. Invitation is extended to any vet erans who served with these two groups during WWII. Reservations at the motel and the banquet must be made by Aug. 15. The Armed Guard branch of the U.S. Navy was formed during WWII and was made up of Navy person nel trained and assigned to man guns on merchant ships to defend them in case of attack. These men, num bering 144,970, served on 6,236 ships during WWII, of which 710 were sunk. The Merchant Marines served alongside these Armed Guard lads on the same ships so they arc also included in the Armed Guard registry. The goal of these groups, besides the fellowship they provide, is to locate as many personnel who served in the Armed Guard and Merchant Marines during WWII as is possible by holding these reunions in vari ous areas. As of June 15, 2001, 18,480 were located by the national regis try office, and time is running out. There are no dues, contributions provide the necessary funds for post age, printing and supplies; and all record keeping and computer work done is by volunteers. Legal notices and apologies Volunteers needed The Deschutes County Chapter of the American Red Cross is recruit ing Warm Springs residents to be come Disaster Services Volunteers. The Red Cross has placed a trailer equipped with enough supplies to open a 100 person shelter on the Warm Springs Reservation. The next step toward quick response to the disaster needs in the area is the train ing of a Disaster Action Team (DAT) on the Reservation. Members of the DAT will provide quick response for disasters from casework to provid ing relief assistance to victims of house fires and opening a shelter should the need arise. Training includes the core disas ter courses; Introduction to Disas ter Services, Mass Care and Shelter Operation. After completing the core courses, members will be given CPR and First Aid training. The fi nal required class is Family Services Casework. All training is. provided free to volunteers. Having the Disaster Services Trailer in position at Warm Springs will provide a quick response to the need for shelter in the area. How ever, to accomplish this the Red Cross must have trained staff ready to respond quickly. Death was due to Acute Respiratory Distress Syn drome four weeks after an internal surgery procedure. Uyeji was born July 22, 1940. She was of Hopi de scendent from Hotvilla, Arizona. Her parents were Edmund and Jean Ncqwatewa from the same location. In 1967 Uyeji then moved to Simnasho, OR. In 1968 she married Hamilton Greeley of the Confeder ated Tribes of Warm Springs Reser vation, there in Simnasho she learned the Wasco-Warm Springs culture, and was adopted as a family member by the Simnasho Elders for her dedication for learning the an cestral songs of the Washut Religion in Simnasho. She also worked as a community counselor in Warm Springs. Later on she divorced Mr. Greeley while remaining a family member and friend to the people of Warm Springs, OR. In 1983, she married Les Uyeji, while residing in Vancouver, WA. There she enjoyed her life and home while working for the special edu cation program of the Vancouver School District. Her hobbies included Native American beadwork, personal cre ations of arts and crafts, attending Pow-Wows to dance, and sharing laughs and smiles with families and friends. Survivors include: her husband Les Uyeji; sons James Greeley, Mike Gomez; daughters Linda and Peggy Gomez; brothers Tyson, Robert, and Harold Ncqwatewa; sisters I'mma Hatton, Diane Barbee and Mary Nez, and 6 grandchildren. Dressing Ceremony was held 11:00 am, Friday June 8"', 2001 at Evergreen Staples Funeral Chapel in Vancouver, WA. Pending was crema tion after funeral services.
