Veterans' Corner
On June 6, 1044, the invasion of
Normandy was the start of the end of
World War II. D Day took place tunic
57 years ago, when the Allied forces
made that historic landing at
Normandy. The names like Utah,
Sward, ( Inwha, Red beaches ring a bell
for all the old Nets. The day the troops
landed to start the big push toward de
feating the (icrman army.
Today everyone really doesn't real
ize what the troops went through as they
stormed the beaches of Normandy,
where thousands of lives were lost hit
ting the beach.
As records indicate on June 6, 1944,
175,0(11) men took part in the invasion.
Paratroopers were dropped behind the
enemy lines to cut off supply lines to
the (icrman army. The (ierman troops
were well fortified as they prepared for
an invasion such as this. They expected
an operation like this and built cement
bunkers and walls covered with barbed
wire, to hamper troops who were invad
ing their land.
Tiny were well prepared building
obstacles on the shore and in the water
to damage landing craft and b.oats that
may come to the shore.
With all the shelling from the war
ships, bombs from aircraft, air strafing,
it took a lot of time for the Allied Forces
to really get a good foothold on the
shore. Like it was said, the Germans had
plenty of time to prepare for such an
invasion, building cement bunkers and
high walls and a lot of barbed wire,

of the shore.
liven though the boys knew the odds
were against them, that they may he
killed, they went forth to face the well
fortified German army. Casualties
mounted into the thousands the first day
of the operation.
On the home front it was just as scaty
as families kept their eyes on the casu
alty lists that were printed in the news
paper each day, and dreaded to see tele
gram delivered to their door, of their son
being killed in action.
Today there arc just a handful of old
veterans who can recall those days and
to some it's hard to look back and re
member friends who died during that
time.
A lot of veterans would rather not
talk about their experiences during war
time. This builds up tension and causes
physical problems for many men and
women who have served their country
during that big World VX'ar.
In today's movies everything is glo
rified for the star and doesn't give ev
erything near the real story of D-Day
and all the hardships, setbacks and suf
fering the troops went through.
The veterans went through a lot and
thought of as "1 lell," but survived. To
day, they say, "When you see a veteran,
shake his hand," for what he has done
for our freedom we have today.
