Mom, Tawny and everyone at Grandma Iris & Grandma Ina's v j -' ' ! f j r All Warriors Memorial The Veteran's Corner Korean War Commemorative Community Update Last summer, Jon Mangis, Direc tor of the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs, sent a letter to ev ery middle and high school in the Stale of Oregon requesting that they become involved in the 50'1' Anni versary of the Korean War Com memorative Community program, l etters were also sent to colleges and universities. More letters went to all city and county governments in the slate. Veterans' organizations were also asked to become Commemora tive Communities. All told, more than 800 letters were sent. There were several important rea sons for participation in the com memoration program. One obvious reason to participate was to honor those who served in the Korean War, including their family members, es pecially those who lost loved ones in the war. Another reason was to provide recognition to those who contributed and sacrificed on the home front. Still another reason to participate was to help provide Americans with a clear understand ing and appreciation of the lessons and history of the Korean War. The following list, provided by the Department of Defense as of January .31, 2001, is a breakdown of those who chose to participate in this project.
