Locals attend Northwest meeting
There were several local Veterans
who attended the Northwest Indian
veterans meeting which was held at
the VA Medical Center, at the Vet
erans 1 lospital in Portland, Oregon,
during the week of Feb. 23, 01.
Topics discussed were in the
scope of the Federal Benefits for Vet
erans and dependents. There are all
kinds of assistance available for vet
erans but they must inquire into
their needs. They may have need for
Health Care, Home Loans, Phar
macy, or just about any kind of
problems a veteran may have, there
are personnel that can be of help.
At the meeting there were reports
of past events and plans for the fu
ture. Discussed were home loans and
health care for veterans and depen
dent. In the past it was almost impos
sible for a Native American to get a
GI home loan because of the status
of land where all or most Native
Americans live on trust land, and it
would be hard for a lender to col
lect payments on defaulted band,
In order the bypass this situation
the VA and the Tribal Councils have
come to an agreement on these con
ditions where they would help in
assisting a Native American to get a
GI home loan, and the technical
problems would be handled through
the Council's offices.
The Health-Care Benefits was
also discussed and in order for a Vet
eran to receive health care, he or she
must generally be enrolled with the
VA. Veterans can apply for enroll
ment any time.
Veterans do not have to be en
rolled if they: (1) have a service-con
