SPILYAYTYMOO
E Coosh EEWA: The way it is
The summer season is fast
coming to an end, and the
nights seem a bit more nippy
and chilly up in the hills. The
mountain roads are busy with
huckleberry pickers each
weekend as there is a good crop
this year.
School is just around the
corner, and all the political
issues have slowed up a little,
well that is on the gaming
situation.
Yep! Everything slowed down
since the measure went down
on the Madras site. We have too
many Consultants telling us to
do the wrong thing. The
location was undesirable, and
we would have come out on the
short end of the stick had we approved that location.
The talk was big in comparison of the Madras VS the Warm
Springs site. They presented figures like there would be nine
million dollar income, at the Madras site, and four million dollars
on a Warm Springs site.
Compare nine million dollar to four million dollars, which would
you choose? Just like that ad on TV, which would you choose if
you had to choose between a Buffalo or a Giraffe, or between an
Elephant or Flowers, which would you choose? This time I'll
omit choosing between, "To-key or Thunderbird.
Some people can make anything sound good. Supposing we did
go through with the Madras site for our Casino, in the long run
who would have profited from it? Everyone, but the Tribes. We
would have had to kick in a percentage to the city of Madras. We
would have had to boost the police force there, provide our own
fire fighting equipment because they wouldn't come on Trust
Land to fight fires. All the employment would come from the
Madras area, because the Police have taken all, the driving
privileges away from most of the Tribal Members; Maybe there
would be one or two employed from Warm Springs.
Sure looks like someone could have made a bundle if we approved
the Madras location, and after everyone got his cut out of the
deal than the Tribes would be getting all the bills.
We can do just as well by building our Casino right here on our
reservation, as long as its along highway 26. I don't need a
Consultant to tell me about the traffic situation. The travel is at a
point that at times you cannot pass a slower car because of head
on traffic.
There are a lot of people from the Metro area that do a lot of
business out here in the Greater Oregon area who say if the Casino
were along highway 26, they would be more than willing to stop
and relax in the Casino for a while, but the Casino in Kahneeta is
just too far out of the way.
The traffic does get real heavy on the weekends all summer long
and there is no let up during the winter months as there are a lot
of skiers who travel to the Central Oregon area for skiing.
There are four seasons that draw a lot of people out of the
Metropolitan area, in the spring it's the fishing season, the fall
it's the hunting season, and the vacationers all summer long. There
is more than enough traffic to carry a Casino here in Warm
Springs, and all income would come in to the Tribes and we
wouldn't have to be dishing out a percentage to any one or
boosting the police force to arrest more Indians.
Member very upset with tribal credit
To the editor,
To the tribal members, I am
writing this letter to express my feel
ing concerning our tribal credit de
partment. At this time I am very, very
upset with them to say the least. On
8-2-00 1 put in a loan for a funeral
grant to help bury my mate, Carol
Herkshan. I was told to check back
on 8-3-00 to see if I was approved. I
was totally shocked to find out that
my loan was denied!!
I was told that it was denied,
because I'm supposed to be delin
quent on my current loan. Well, if that
was the case why was I not informed .
of this matter, they could have at least
sent me a notice letting me know that
I was behind on my loan. Well, it that "
me sick!! To me its just like I had
slapped them in the face!! Its not that
the money was going to be spent fool
ishly or anything. The money was
supposed to help with food, flowers,
plus the other expenses. After all, as
far as I know you only bury a person
once do you not?! So just a word of
advice to the tribal membership,
Please, Please get in touch with your
tribal council representative to make
sure that there are funds available for
funeral grants just in case someone
you love passes on!!
Don't be left out in the cold like
I was, because believe me, it hurts a
lot knowing that you cannot help with
the burial expenses for the person you
love. I am praying that no one else
has to go through what I had to!! In
closing this letter it really hurts me to
say this, but when it is time for me to
go I'll just request that a hole be dug
in the ground and that I be at least
wrapped in a blanket and covered
up!! Because for fact that there might
not be enough funds available to
cover the expenses of a proper burial
service. That's how strongly I feel
about this issue!! If I have hurt
anyone's feelings, just put yourself in
my place and try to think what I am
going through at this time! Thank you
for letting me express my feeling con
cerning this matter. It does need to
be addressed at a tribal council meet
ing in the near future.

To the editor,
This family function brought
several descendants of the Kalama
families together from Oregon,
Washington and Hawaii. We had dif
ferent families of the Hawaiian dis
tant relatives than others we had par
ticipate in the past several family
gatherings. There will be more future
activities related to this past gather
ing, some of these include book writ
ings, re-writing histories, plus other
challenges.
Sorry for being late in sending
out this information especially for all
the people who helped in our prepa
ration for this year's Kalama Family
Reunion, June 2000. The turnout was
small and seemed unprepared, but
with the help from the many people
of our Indian communities, this
wouldn't have been so good.
We thank all the following
people who helped in some way or
another: June, Juliane, Steven Smith,

Also we thank all the families
from the different Washington reser

Hello, My name is Alesia Eyle.
My Indian name is "Tuk-Tin-Pa".
My parents are Alexander and
Pauline Eyle, both of Yakama and
the late Arlita "Ducky" Johnson of
Warm Springs.
I am 34 years of age and I enjoy
beadworkings. I am also learning to
paint with watercolors. I have lived
an active life working as a firefighter
and in heavey construction and car
pentry. My beadwork is hightly
known to many people. I have been
active in Longhouse work in both
tribes of Warm Springs and Yakama.
I have contracted cystic fibrosis,
the severe scarring of the lungs, since
1995, and am accompanied by liquid
oxygen portable stroller. And for the
past two years I have been trying to
get on the list at Washington Uni
versity Hospital for a double lung
transplant Available lungs will come
from the states of Alaska, Washing
ton, Oregon, and Idaho. This hospi
tal has accomplished five successful
lung trasplants this year.
I In order for me to have this opera
tion, I need to relocate to the Seattle
area. I will need finances for rent up
to three years. I will require a care
provider for a period of time before
and after the operation. I need to
have transportation to and from the
hospital several times a week before
and after the operation. And that is
only the beginning.
Idon't want to overwhelm anyone
with the details so I will finish by
saying, I am asking for asking for
support and help from the people of
Warm Springs Tribes. Myself and ..
my sister Jacqueline Kalama will be
in Warm Springs to do some
fundraising. What we have planned
will be a mini-raffle on August 30 in
the lobby of the agency. Ticket sales
will begin on August 24th. We will
also have a variety of beadwork for
sale in the agency lobby.
Mailed contributions may be sent
to Eyle Fund; co Foster Care Center;

and consideration.

Items stolen
A small town prosecuting attorney called his first witness to the stand
in a trial - a grand motherly, elderly woman. He approached her and asked,
"Mrs. Jones, do you know me?"
She responded, "Why, yes, I do know you Mr. Williams. I've known .
you since you were a young boy, and frankly, you've been a big disappoint
ment to me. You lie, cheat on your wife, you manipulate people, and talk
about them behind their backs. You think you're a rising big shot when you
haven't the brains to realize you never will amount to anything more than a
two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you."
The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do, he pointed
across the room and asked, "Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attor-

The man can't build a normal relationship with anyone and his law
practice is one of the shoddiest in the entire state. Yes, I know him."
At this point, the judge rapped the courtroom to silence, and called
both counselors to the bench. In a.very quiet voice, he said with menace, "If
either of you asks her if she knows me, you'll be jailed for contempt!"
