Owen Danzuka at bat for Jeffeson County in the
2000 District 5 All-Star Tournament. Danzuka went
9-13 to lead to Jefferson County Ajl-Stars with a
batting average of .692
The 2000 District 5 junior
baseball All-Star Tournament was
held from July 14-17. The host of
the 2000 All-Star Tournament was
Crook County, so the tournament
was held in Prineville, Ore..
Jefferson County All-Stars consisted
of 14 players. Five Native
Americans made the team, three of
them Warm Springs tribal members.
Two of the players were from
Culver, Ore., three from Warm
Springs, Ore. and the remaining nine
players were from Madras, Ore.
Jefferson County's first game
was held July 14, 2000 at Davidson
Field in Prineville at 11:00 a.m..
Jefferson County faced off against
Sherman County. Sherman County
opened up with one run in the first
inning, which proved to be the only
run they'd score in the entire game.
Jefferson County 10-runned
Sherman County, 11-1, in the fifth
inning. Sherman County had a
female pitcher, which noticeably
intimidated some Jefferson County
batters; She finished with four K's
for the game.
A 30 minute delay took place
when a Jefferson County batter hit
the ball up the third base line and
with a bad hop, the ball hit a
Sherman County player square in the ,
mouth.
Next, the Jefferson County All
Stars had to face Crook County All
Stars in an 8 a.m. game. Jefferson
County lost 6-2, only letting C.C.
score all their runs in two innings of
play. Crook County eventually went
on to sit and wait for a backdoor '
winner in the championship game.
The third game was the most
drug-out game of the tournament.
The scheduled 5 p.m. afternoon
game, against The Dalles All-Stars,
didn't end until 9 p.m. due to scoring
problems. The problems caused
delays totaling 4S-60 minutes.
Jefferson County became victorious
in the middle of the 7 th inning when
the home umpire was struck with the
ball and called the game, with a 12
8 score, due to visibility problems.
This game had many lead changes
throughout the entire four hours.
In the fourth game, Jefferson
County had to face off against Hood
River All-Stars. The game started
at 1 p.m. A close 7-9 score
eliminated Jefferson County from
the tournament. One of the Jefferson
County coaches blamed the loss not
only on a few crucial errors but also
on a lack of hitting by the entire
Jefferson County squad.
Over the entire four games,
Jefferson County's accumulative
batting average was .214. Here's a
breakdown of the individual batting
averages of the whole Jeffeson
County team:

Campaign urges Thorpe's picture on Wheaties box
Towns have named schools and
parks after Jim Thorpe. Statues of
Okahoma's storied Olympic athlete
abound. Many have proclaimed him
the athlete of the century. One
honor, however, has eluded Thorpe.
In nearly 70 years that General Mills
has been putting athletes on cereal
boxes, Thorpe's picture never has
been on a box of Wheaties.
That's a miscarriage of history
that one Oklahoman intends to
rectify, Anna McKibben who lives
in Quapaw, got the idea shortly after
she was crowned National Miss
Indian USA inNovember 1998. She
hesitated for fear that people think
Thorpe was out of fashion.
After this years' Super Bowl
when a viewer poll on ABC-TV
named Thorpe the athlete of the
century, McKibben decided to start
a campaign. "I thought it was
exciting that an Indian had been
nominated athlete of the century,"
said McKibben, who will write her
master's theses about Thorpe.
McKibben Has joined forces
with Thorpe's daughter Grace, who
thinks the idea is grand.
"I'm pushing 80," Grace
Thorpe said, "I don't want to get
involved in something that won't
happen, I think it's workable. I think
this will happen." Thorpe says she
has mailed and faxed nearly 1,000
news releases to newspapers and
tribal offices. This month, she will
be in California to help dedicate a
new Jim Thorpe school, and she'll
push for support there.
Greg Zimprich, the General
Mills executive who handles the
Wheaties account, doesn't offer
encouragement. "We have done
legends boxes in the past honoring
past great champions and great
athletes," he said in telephone
interview from company
headquarters in Minnesota, "I don't
think we're planning on doing and
short term. Jim Thorpe certainly
would be an appropriate person to
feature on the Wheaties box, but we
don't have any plans to do that now."
McKibben's contact with
General Mills has been limited and
has met with no success, she said.
She sent an e-mail suggesting
Thorpe go on a box and received and
e-mail saying thanks but thousands
suggest favorite athletes, so no
thanks. The she wrote a real letter
"to whom it may concern." The
reply, said McKibben: "Here's a
dollar-off coupon, thank you for the
suggestion."
Please send letters or calls of
support to: Greg Zimprich, General
Mills, P.O. Box 1 113, Minneapolis,
