E Coosh EEWA: The way it is
The fourth of July, the day
that made history in this
country so many year ago.
Well today we still observe
that day, remembering the
signing of the Declaration of
Independence, and to be free.
The activities that take place
like picnics, community gath
erings where everyone has a
great time during the day.
The big fire works that
take place in the evening
shows the rockets bursting re
minds everyone of the battle
for freedom and how the Star Spangled Banner, was written,
for our National Anthem. The bombs bursting in air gave
proof that our flag was still there. This has been evident in all
wars where bombs were bursting in air to show that our flag
was still there.
There have been no wars to speak of since the Vietnam
War, and today many of the younger generation don't under
stand why we honor our veterans, because they were there
fighting to protect our freedom. We respect our National An
them, when it's played during ball games and rodeos and
other activities. We are a proud nation living free, and we
should be respectful to all veterans who have faced hardships
during war.
Many of our veterans are passing on now and are thinning
down real fast. But in their day they saw plenty of action
where real bullets were being shot at them.
When ever I hear the National Anthem I get a lump in my
throat, as I am reminded of many friends and class mates who
neyef came home from overseas, from the combat zone. It is
? they who are honored and they will never be forgotten. Lets
hope that there will never be any wars for some time to come.
Well, today we are working on a veterans memorial
which will be erected down by the Museum. We have plans
and drawings of the memorial and now we are waiting on fig
ures of the cost to build the memorial. When ever we get that
information we will be ready to proceed with the project and
hopefully we will dedicate that on Veterans day in Novem
ber. A list of all the veterans was published in the last Spilyay
Tymoo, and the intent was to have public input to remind us
if there are any names that may have been left off, or some
that are not to be listed. If there are any names someone
knows of please call Spilyay Tymoo, (541) 553-3274, so we
can complete the list before the engraving starts because we
want everyone to be on the memorial.
So don't get angry with me if I never mentioned some
one's name, as I didn't intend to do so but it is for you to re
mind us who we left off.
This project has been long overdue and we can be proud
of our veterans who served our country in time of unrest.
Well the weather has finally cleared up and the sun is
shinning with the temperature up in the high 90's. This is the
time of the year for a good vacation from the job, for relaxa
tion and rest. Travel to the mountains or along the coast, or to
pow-wows and rodeos, or just sight seeing across the country
like in dry creek. Well, dry creek might be pretty good but
there are other places that might be better to go to.AHB

Tribal member speaks of Pi-Ume-Sha
To the editor,
My name is Sandra Brunoe, I am
an enrolled member of The Confed
erated Tribes here in Warm Springs.
I wanted to have a food conces
sion stand at this year's Pi-Ume-Sha
celebration, and I was told that I
had to have an "APPROVED
MENU" by the Pi-Ume-Sha Com
mittee. My menu was going to be
Indian tacos, fried bread, hamburg
ers, pop and coffee. I was turned
down for this menu and was told to
pick some other food items. They
also informed me that the charge for
a concession stand was $50.00 per
day. This is overwhelming.
Why is it that only the Pi-Ume-Sha
committee is the only one per
mitted to have Indian tacos and
fried bread and others that put up
stands are dictated to not be able to
have these items on their menu?
I did write a letter to the Tribal
Council regarding my concern, and
I have not received a response yet.
The Tribal Council does contribute
to this committee (about 23 of their
Thank you Warm Springs
To the editor,
I wanted to take this time to thank
the community of Warm Springs for
the warm welcome you have given
me. I moved to Central Oregon from
Northern Arizona in March last year
to fill the position as your Public
Health Educator. Not soon after my
arrival I was delegated acting direc
tor for Community Health Services.
Working for the community has been
a true pleasure, and has allowed me
to meet such wonderful people. Over
the past year I have developed many
wonderful relationships and have
been adopted into so many families,
This truly has been a place that I can"
call home.
Today, I begin a new journey, a
journey that will allow me to be a
stronger voice for American Indian's
throughout the United States. I will
Leadership not'
acceptable, re
cruit new leaders
To the editor,
I am a Veteran of the Korean
War and in our war experience we
do not send a private to handle tac
tics that he may not be qualified for.
Another member of higher rank and
more knowledge would be sent to
assure the job would be handled
correctly and properly.
I have been hearing about the
financial situation of our tribe and
that we are in the hole. I feel that if
we were to bring in new leaders for
our tribe that would be a good
thing. We do not need a "yes" man
in our leadership. Our people will
go down the tube if we continue
with the leaders that we have now.
If the people we have as leaders
now are not qualified to provide the
leadership this tribe needs, why not
replace them with other members
who are? Just like the private would
be replaced.
Tnank you for listening.

let others in the community know
what had happened to me. If others
agree with the decision made, or
they don't, would you please speak

I would of liked to put up a
stand and be able to serve what I
had planned out, but instead I didn't
have a stand at the Pi-Ume-Sha
grounds this year, because of the
above reasons I have stated.
Another observance, where were
all the bead vendors? I only saw a
few of them. Or were only a few of
them selected as well? Where were
their competitors? No competitors,
no new selections of new beads and
a set price. I would like to look and
buy all different kinds of beads, but
this year there was little selection.
Thank you for letting me voice
my opinion, I hope that other tribal
members will speak to their council
representative about this committee,
we need to voice our concerns, and
hope that the Tribal Council will
hear us and respond to us.

Take care of
yourselves
To the editor,
i Hello rez, all my family and
friends, the elders, my best buds, the
little giants who ran circles around
me, made me dizzy. Yes, I miss you.
I'll be back soon. Some are wondering
how I'm doing. Not bad, kinda tough
hanging in there. Been going to AA
regularly, not funny, it's a good start.
I just want you to know to take care
of yourselves. The kids and elders,
your families, keep up the good work.
And I know we all lost someone in
our families through the years and
today, bless them. My thoughts and
: prayers go out to you newborns. Hope
for a good future and your commu-

You are in my thoughts & prayers
To the editor,
This letter is to my true homies
and to my family back on the rez and
most certainly to the ladies also! On
the "rez" I got nothin' but love and
respect for ya'H just keep the str8ight
attitude, stay strong and don't ever
let no one get you down. Be proud of
being a true N8tiv. I just wanted to
say all my true doggs and family I've
never forgotten you. Even though
I'm behind these walls ya'll are in
my thoughts and prayers. Keep your
head up. I got 5 years in and got 5
years left on this bid. I'm trying to
stay sane and strong.
It's our strength that will keep the
Warm Springs "rez" strong and for
ever looking to the future for our
people. I've learned so much about
myself and what a place like prison
can do to the strongest and weakest
of people and especially the Indians
of this world. What we don't realize
is the true strength comes within our
hearts. So brotha's and sista's out
there, please listen carefully to the
Creator and follow your own hearts
and continue to keep on learning as
someday you will pass on what
you've learned to the next generation
our children and their children. Lis

WHO helped
meant a lot to Kenny for all of you to
step forward and share to his family
and show how much you all care for
one another when a crisis takes place.
I cannot express the feelings the
family has for you all but words
really cannot express what you have
done for the child who is in the hos
pital. I would like for you all to keep
the young one and family in your
hearts and prayers because it was our
Pusha who has saved him.
Being so far away from home and
having an accident such the one that
took place can take it's toll on a
family: food, lodging, gas, etc. With
a family of 25 members being over in
Minnesota, the Scabbyrobe family
have contributed so much into our
Indian People all over Indian coun
try and it makes me feel so good that
we can do the same for them. So my
thanks and appreciation goes out to
all that have come together to help
the family.
Respectfully submitted,
