SPILYAY TYMOO
Edith (Switzler) Danzuka was
born July 8, 1 9 1 8 in Warm Springs,
Oregon to Ruby (Smith) and Jasper
Switzler. Edith helped raise her sis
ter Evangeline and brother Delton
when they were born. She then went
on to Boarding school at Warm
Springs and Chcinawa Indian
School in Salem, Oregon where she
graduated in 1938.
She began working in the sum
mers in 1934. She worked in three
administration buildings, the first
one being where the Police station
now stands, she served food to the
Civilian Conservation Corp for one
dollar a day and meals. She also
seen four superintendents serve
terms of office and worked under
three secretary-treasurers, often
acting as second in command in the
absence of the General Manager.
In 1938, following graduation
from Chcinawa, Edith was a tele
phone operator for the Tribes, then
a nurse's aide. From 1945 to 1948
she served as a tribal clerk and from
1948 to 1952 as land clerk. She
began work in the Vital Statistics
department from 1953 until her re
tirement in 1980. She began work
ing for the Confederated Tribes
when there was a total of three
employees including herself. When
she retired, the Tribes was one of
the biggest employers in Central
Oregon.
Edith will be fondly remembered
as always smiling and a positive ,
role model in the community. She
was the first woman to serve on the
Tribal Council. Her term was from
May 1953 to April 1956, she served

term ended.
Mrs. Danzuka married Norman at
The Dalles, Oregon on May 9, 1939.
They made their home in Tcnino
Valley where they raised their
daughter Eraina. While Edith worked
in the office, Norman worked their
ranch and was busy with tribal
council, committees and being a fa
ther. Including raising her brother
and sister, she also took in other
children (during the summer months)
giving them a home away from home.
Edith raised her Great-Grandson
Darreck Palmer from infancy and he
was still living with her at the time of
her passing.
Norman and Edith's marriage
lasted 45 years until Norman had
gotten sick and passed away No
vember 29, 1984. She remained a
widow but had a special friend and
companion the last two years who
she enjoyed being with and traveling
to different places with. Sammy
Danzuka will always hold a special
place in the family's hearts for mak
ing her remainder years special.
Survivors include one daughter
Eraina (Danzuka) Palmer, five
grandchildren Lori Kerr of Portland,
OR, Rayncle (Willy) Danzuka, Ro
nald Palmer and Kelli (Clem) Picard
of Warm Springs; and Jason Palmer

She worked for the Confederated
Tribes of Warm Springs for several
years.

Bend in the mid-50's. She returned
in 1 982 to Bend, moved to Redmond
in 1 995 and then to Warm Springs in
1996.
She was the 911 coordinator and
Springs Police Department and been
employed by the police department
for 6 years and retired on May 3 1 of
this year due to her ill health. She
also was a member of the Bend Moose
Lodge.
Mrs. Talifson enjoyed reading,
shopping, "'getting her nails done",
and most of all, spending time with
her family. She was a member of the
Karuk Tribe in California.
Preceding her in death are her
Gaming Commissioner
Council and two members at large.

cooking for cattle rides. She was a
very hard worker, honest and very
special to everyone who knew her.
Dressing ceremonies were pri
vate at the Bel-Air Funeral home in
Madras, OR for the immediate fam
ily at 2 p.m. Thursday, June, 15,
2000.
Then was transported to (he
ShakerChurch in Warm Springs for
overnight services. Burial was at 9
a.m. Friday June 16, 2000 at the
