The Endurance Horse Race has
become one of the popular high
light events of the Pi-Ume-Sha
Celebration as each year go by.
The very first race was held during
the Root Feast weekend on April
12, 1980 and was a 18-20 mile
course. The race then was spon
sored by the Warm Springs Float
committee of the Steno pool (The
Tribal Council Administrative
Services).
The first race had six entries,
Larry Squiemphen, Toba Scott, Joe
Scott, Reggie Winishut, Emerson
"Chief Smith, and Stanley "Buck"
' Smith. The winner was Chief
Smith. His prize was cash and a
trophy from the Float Committee.
The trophy was a memorial trophy
from the Quinn family. The Elmer
Quinn memorial trophy had to be
won three times in order to keep it.
Buck Smith came in second and
Reggie Winishut came in third.
As years passed, changes were
made and so did the race. There is
a Senior Division and a Junior
1 Division. Last year there were 15
' entrants. This year was a total of
seven.
