causes at her home in Warm
Springs, Oregon. She was
brought to the Agency
Longhouse on Sunday, May 28,
2000 at 10 a.m. with overnight
services. She was laid to rest at
10 a.m. in the Dry Creek Cem
etery on May 30, 2000.
Even though Verbena had a
sixth grade education she was a
national renown panelist on
education, traditionculture and
elder issues. She served on
Felt-Stokes Suicide Confer
ences Board, Tribal Education,
Culture & Heritage committees,
School Literature Advisory -Board.
She also served as a co
ordinator for the Northwest Lab
Indian Reading Scries, a mem
ber of the Tribal Appellate .

iary, PTA for 509 J, Title 4
Parent's Club, Johnson
O'Mallcy and worked for the
Tribal Education department for
years. She was a Pi-Ume-Sha Com-,
mittce Member (in it's early stages),
Oregon Historical Society, Advisor
to several Miss Warm Springs and
many more Advisory, Boards and
committees. She served her people
spiritually, emotionally and physi
cally up to her death. "
She is survived by her children,

James "Jimmy" Scott, age
46, died May 31, due to an
automobile accident while
walking to his home on Upper
Dry Creek Road. He was
airlifed to St. Charles Medical
Center in Bend, Oregon where
he had passed away. Mr. Scott
was a lifelong resident of Warm
Springs. He was also an en
rolled member of the Confed-

at birthMay 28 atMountain View
Hospital in Madras, Oregon.
Anola is survived by her
parents Kenneth Sahme and
crated Tribes of Warm Springs. He
was born to parents Raymond and
Adonis (Powyoit) Scott on Novem
ber 1 . 1 953 at Redmond, OR. He was
self-employed as an artist.
Preceding him in death are his
parents Raymond and Adonis Scott,
grandparents Ethel and James Scott,
brothers Ivan and Richard Scott,
sislersLorettaandCeciliaRose Scott,
nephew Jason School, uncles Ivan,
Anola Mae Sahme
Ruby Bullock of Warm Springs,

2 at Warm Springs Presbyterian
Church and burial was at Red Lake
Cemetery.

21 years died June 4 following
an automobile accident. Mr.
Charley was born to parents

Meanus March 8, 1979 and was

Springs. He was a lifelong resi
dent of Warm Springs and was
employed at the Warm Springs For
est Product Industries.
He is preceded in death by two
brothers and his one month old son,
Kamiakin Charley.
Survivors include the mother of
his child Dionne Thomas, his parents
Keith Charley Sr. and Marvena
(Roscoe Jr.) Thompson, brothers

June 6 at the Simnasho Longhouse,
followed by overnight services.
Burial was June 7 at the Mouth of
the Warm Springs River Cemetery.
Benefit Description:
Department of Veterans Affairs(DVA)
Pension is a program that provides finan
ciid support to "War Time" Veierans hav
ing limited income and ure considered to
be to tally disabled by the DV A to the level
the disability precludes the Veteran from
gainful employment.
The financial amount DVA will pro
vide, depends on the Veterans current
amount of annual or monthly income. The
actual financial pension provided by DVA
is based on a 'Total Family or Household"
income. Monthly payments are made to
the Vcieran to bring a total annual income,
including current retirementsocial secu
rity and other income to a pre-established
monthly financial support level.
Note: Total accountable income may
be reduced by household un-reimbursed
medical expenses, legal fees or related
personal expenses.
Eligibility:
The Veteran must have spent 90daysor
more of Active Duty Service of which at
least 1 Day must have occurred during a
period of War. The Veteran must have
been discharged under conditions other
than Dishonorable.
The Veteran must have "Disability"
(ies) the DVA evaluates as permanent and
total. For DVA Pension purposes, perma
nent and total means it is not likely the
Veteran will be able to maintain a substan
tially gainful employmentposition. UN
employability and age are not factors in the
DVA eligibility decision.

Dependency and Indemnity Com
pensation (DIC)
DIC is a monetary benefit awarded to
surviving spouses, unmarried children and
under I 8 and certain helpless children and
parents of Service Personnel or Veterans
who die because of "Service Connected"
causes. In certain cases, entitlement can be
established if the Veterans' Death is "Non
Service Connected".
A basic DIC payment is made monthly
to eligible persons with other allowances
added under certain circumstances (ie, ad
ditional dependenlsorifasurvivingspouse
is so severely disabled as to be house bound
or in need of regular aid and attendance).

a VA National Cemetery. Grave sites in
National Cemeteries CANNOT Be re

The eligibility criteria for a VA Head
stoneMarker is the same as for Burial in
a VA National Cemetery. It is also avail
able to individuals retired from the US
Military, Selective Reserves and National
Guard.

VA May pay a burial allowance if
any of the following conditions are
met.
The Veterans' Death is considered
"Service Connected".
The Veteran was entitled to receive
"Non-Service Connected Pension" or"Ser
vice Connected Compensation" or would
have been entitled to "Compensation" but
elected to recei ve"US Military Retirement
Pay".
The Death occurs at a VA Facility, or
Non VA Facility that VA had contracted
with.
":lot or Interment allowance" may be
paid for a "Non-Service Connected Death"
in addition to the Burial Allowance.

issued in the Name of the "Honorable
Discharged Deceased Veteran" to the "Next
