E Coosh EEWA: The way it is
"Well, Let's See," Think I'll
ramble a little on the outcome of
the recent election of moving the
Casino to Madras, Oregon. The
issue went down pretty bad by
the voters.
"The All-Mighty dollar VS
Sclf-Respcct,"Gocs to show that
people have feelings for them
selves at any cost. To me when I
refer to self-respect, the thoughts
take me back to the day's of
when I was just a "Cute Little
Tyke," We used to travel to The
Dalles, OR. I hated to go to The
Dalles, because I always had a
bad feeling when ever we would
go there. The uneasiness came
when we would go down town
and see signs in the door win
dows of the cafes that read, "No Indians Allowed."
That will never leave my mind of those days of the past and that
really stung my heart, and there was always an un-easy feeling each
time we would go there. There was only one cafe where all the
Indians could eat and that was a run down Chinese cafe on the side
street that led down to the Ferry Landing. In them days the only way
to get across the river there was by a Ferry boat.
I always asked my parents, "Why do we have to come to The
Dalles?" They would say, "We have relatives down here." At that
time there people that lived at, Lone Pine, Spear Fish, Hood River
and Celilo, to name a few places. I remember those days and as I
reflect back my thoughts go even deeper, like that must be the way
a stray dog feels as he is trying to be friendly and accepted, but people
just kick him around.
But when that big fall fish run came those greedy car salesmen
were right there telling the fishermen he could take any car on the
lot and settle after the fish run was over.
So when you are stung once, it hurts and you never forget those
feelings. Many people might have been stung in Madras, and if so
that hurts and they will never forget... So why cry over spilled milk,
: we could take those dollars were going to spend to build in Madras
and build our own Casino along highway 26. If that's what the
people want, that's what they should get! ! ! " '' '' ' ' ' " '
There are some sharp people around here, but just because they
don't have, "Consultant," after their name no one listens to them.
The people have spoken, and in the future they should be
consulted before any wild schemes are to be presented to them. Like
. the one where the Consultants say that Madras is the only place to
build. The people say we can make it by building along highway 26.
Why not reverse the situation and they would have said that the
Reservation was the only place to build, than all the charts would just
have been reversed. As it was mentioned once that there was no
power in areas mentioned, don't know which way they are looking
because there is power all over the reservation, and it would take that
much to build a cesspool, or lagoon.
Some say if we would build along the highway 26, there could be
opportunities for other tribal members to go into small business like
a gas station, grocery store, motel and other shops. And if we did go
with the Madras area this wouldn't have been possible.
Yep! We have all kinds of land where we don't have to deal with
anyone like the state representatives and all the income would come
to the tribes and we wouldn't have to give a percent to any one for
the operation of the Casino. We' ve taken chances before, so why not
do what we feel is the best for our future.
We should do as the elders did in the past and look to the future
of the tribes as they did and what we are squandering away to day
on un-necessary things with out any thought of what we are doing.
It's the people who should be speaking out on what they think is the
best things to do for all the tribes. They say we will be broke shortly
but they never realize all the un-nessary things they do on spending
money. We all have youngsters coming up that we should be
looking after for the future. Do something good for them...AHH

Tired of harrassment
To the editor,
I really don't know where to start
this. I'm writing in regards to my
probation officer Lcona Ike. Well,
during Celilo Salmon feast I attended
with staff and other clients. I seen
Lcona there and her response wasn't
hi or how are you. It was "Are you on
pass."
Last year I went to Warm Springs
after a year and three months of so
bricty. I felt like she was invading
my personal life. I was humiliated
after being escorted to jail to be put
on the intoxilzer and blew 0.0.
That was the beginning. What I'm
writing this letter for is because Leona
called my counselor at Warm Springs
making threats she's going to throw
my a in jail. So I then went to my
counselor here in Pendleton and told
her my situation. I've been here in
aftercare since February 26th. So
anyway my counselor here in
Pendleton called Leona, who was
Stepparenting
not easy
To the editor,
I would like to voice my concern
to the ever growing step-parenting
family. If grows more and more ev
ery day. Men who marry women
with children or women who marry
men with children. Why are
step-moms or step-dads so impatient
with their step-children. If you knew
the woman or man you married had
these children before you married
him or her, then you fully accepted
this responsibility of becoming a
good step-parent.
If you are angry or impatient with
your step-children, then maybe you
need to bow on out of your spouses
life and make hisher life easier along
with the children's life. If you truly
love the man or woman who has
children, you will dq everything and
anything in your power to be a good
step-parent. Ifypu dori't, then there
is definitely something very wrong
with you.
Our children need good healthy
lifestyles in order to become re
sponsible healthy people. Our chil
dren are our future. If you want a
good future, act now and help these
children to learn a healthy, functional
atmosphere. An atmosphere where
they learn love, trust, security, re
sponsibility and good moral stan
dards. Think about the future, our
children's future.

rude to her on the phone. My coun
selor then called me after conversing
with Leona. Leona told here she was
not lifting the warrant on me. I then
called to speak with Leona's boss,
whom I've gotten no response from.
I called Tribal Court and found out I
had no warrants. So Leona took it
upon herself to think the worst about
me and made verbal threats about
throwing me in jail.
It this harassment or what? I feel
it is and I don't think I need anyone

Let God be my judge. I relapsed but
I picked myself up and I'm starting

Writing letters is
less expensive
To the editor,
Letter writing. I know writing let
ters is definitely less expensive to
communicate with those you know,
live a far way from you.
Here are a few assets I've learned
from writing.
1 . Take, make some time to write.
2. Get to the main point why you're
writing.
3. Make a long story short.
4. Writing can relive some stress
if you're having a hard day.
5. You can express yourself more
through writing letters.
I can't really know how I know all
this, but it's pretty cool and especially
less expensive when it comes to
getting your phone bill every month.
Thank you.

Why not sublease
To the editor,
Hello from Pastor Rick. I am on
my fifteenth year of living on the
reservation. Fourteen years on being
a FireMedic volunteer. So, I have a
pretty good feeling of what I am
about the share in my observations of
life in Warm Springs as being correct.
The one factor that for me has it's
roots into relationships that sour.
Thinking that becomes fuzzy over
time. Health that drops off quickly.
Hopelessness, fear, and death. This
factor is the use of alcoholdrugs.
Beer, wine, hard stuff, meth, grass.
The meth and grass the police con
tinue to keep a lid on it. The hard
stuff is controlled by the State. But
the beer and wine WOW. I was
talking with a Tribal member the
other day and they had an interesting
idea.
Why not for an experiment have
the Tribal Government sublease the
beer and wine license from the folks
who run the Rainbow Market. They
sell a lot of things from their store,
but have them remove the beer and
wine. Pay them the value of sales of
the missing beer and wine for a
three-year period. Now I know the

Youngsters, think twice
To the editor,
Well, what'z happening. This is
Rayfield Jeff Mitchell. I thought I'd
drop a few lines to all you Springers
out there. I am over here in Kansas,
that is United States Penitentiary,
Leavenworth, Kansas, but anyway
this is to all my family members
also! I've been here 2 months now! I
got 5 years left on this 1 1 year bid.
These 5 years I've been down I've
learned alot from other Natives do
ing Life sentences, but there is another
thing I want to say to the younger
brotha's out there, stop what your
doing, listen to the elders, learn from
them about our culture, our language,
fight for what's right, keeping our
culture strong. Prison ain't no place
to be, but that's where you're going
in that direction.
Well, this is to all family out there,
stay strong, quit drinking. But like I
said before to all you youngsta's
trying to be gangstas. That ain't no
life. If you continue doin' what your
doin' I'll see ya'll before I get out
cause you'll be coming to a peniten
tiary. I don't wanna see that, I want to
see all youngsta's representing for
our tribe have N8tiv pride, not a
Gangsta's pride. Be real to your
selves. You need self respect to get
respect. I seen a lot of people die
alcohol license?
devil is in the details, the wnat it
questions begin to fly. Active alco-
holies will try to continue to stay
active. But, what if the drive into
town for beer is to much for a young
couple that day. An evening of sober
talking begins about their marriage
and their kids and healing begins to
take place. Maybe that would be
worth the hassle of the devil in the
details of subleasing the Rainbow
Market's beer and wine license. And
what of the money saved by Tribal
Government in a drop of services
needed by folks. Well, something to
think and pray on.
Sooooo....hug someone you love.
Hug someone you dislike. No alco
hol or tobacco for children. One day
at a time. Buckle up the kids and v
yourselves. Don't hit or beat on v
yourself. Pay your bills before gam
bling then stay home. Read the Bible
for it's effect on your heart. Pray to
God to the point of hearing Him.
Honor someone. Love yourself. Like
yourself. See you in church.

these 5 years I've been down. I spent
most of my bid in penitentarys. These
pens ain't no joke. I seen a lot of
people die just because the other
people in here don't have respect for
others. I'm gonna give you an ex
ample, I've seen people get stabbed
just because they bumped into
somebody without saying excuse me.
So they get killed just because they
don't say nothing to the person he
disrespected. I want all you youngstas
to take my advise this place ain't no
joke. I been here 2 months and I've
seen alot of people get hurt here but
any wayz. I regret what I did back in
'95 but we all learn by mistakes. It
took me coming to prison to realize
what I was doing to myself and my
family. But it's all good now! That I

once again this is to my family in
