SPILYAY tymoo
E Coosh EEWA: The way it is
S P XhYhY SP?Ai?S
Now that everyone has had his
fill with "Lookish, and Coom
Coom," as the Root Feast and
Salmon feasts have been ob
served here in Warm Springs,
Simnasho and Celilo. Observing
the first roots and the first Salmon
of the season and the thanks given
to the Creator for all the abundant
crops for the year. With the cer
emonies completed everyone can
feel free to go out and dig roots
and catch salmon for their own
use.
It's always good to hear the
Chanting of all the traditional
songs and the drumming while
all the native foods are being
prepared. The salmon, deer meat,
roots and berries, being prepared
in their special way for the ceremonies. The drum beats can be heard
at an even pace, and the songs with their special meanings for the
occasion.
For so long I never really paid any attention to the songs and
drumming. Why they called them the first seven and stuff like that.
Each sequence consisted of seven songs. The only time I did pay
some attention to the chanting was during funerals. I used to have a
sad feeling hearing those songs. All the songs have a sacred
meanings and messages, everything done in these ceremonies have
special meanings.
When I was a kid, the Root feast meant the first rodeo of the year.
But it was respectful to wait until the final seven was completed and
feast ceremonies were carried out before we would start the rodeo.
Sometimes they would run behind time and we'd have to hold up the
rodeo and that caused the crowd to become impatient. Yep! every
one eager to test his skills against that salty bronc, and sometimes it
seemed to take for ever for them to complete all the ceremonies and
tear into the meal.
When the ceremonies were completed it was like a big "sigh" of
relief, and the rodeo can begin. People never realized why we never
started the rodeo at 1 :00 pm, and they would become impatient and
call it a slow rodeo, they would even start honking their horns for us
to begin. Some times the ceremonies would run past 2 pm, and that
really would make our rodeo the slowest rodeo ever. But when the
rodeo did finally get started things would go just fine. We didn't
have the finest rodeo arena and most of the time wondered how it
held those wild horses. Some of those wild horses were rough on the
Chutes. When we would start to let them out of the chutes, than we'd
get the hammer saw and nails and repair the chute for the nest horse.
Most of the time we'd end up using one or two chutes, and nail the
" others shut and using them to rig the horses to be moved up the go
good chute.
In them days the Root Feast rodeo used to be one to the first
rodeo's around this country. But now days they have indoor rodeos.
Many of the top cowboys got their start in rodeo at the root feast
rodeo here in Warm Springs.
After the root feast rodeo than there were all kinds of rodeos
around the country, like Arlington, OR., Prosser, WN., Naches,
WA., Bickleton, WA., Packwood, WN., to name a few of the early
rodeos. In them days we'd find any kind of reason to have a little
rodeo and Easter was another week-end for a rodeo if the root feast
didn't come on the same time. Or if there was nothing going on
anywhere a bunch of guys would say, "Let's run in some horses and
ride-em," so away we' d go to round up a bunch of wild horses. Those
were the fun days when we'd have a little rodeo and everyone
donated something for the repairs of the arena and never expected
any compensation because we loved the sport.
Well, today one can only think back of the good ole days when
everyone worked together to have a little fun. Progress can't be
stopped as we had to abandon our old rodeo grounds and the Early
Child Hood now occupies the area, from there it was moved across
the road but soon had to abandon that area for the new IHS complex..
So today we don' t see any free rodeos and good times like in the past,
where did everybody go??? AHH-NAH-CHI TOON! ! !
The Casino, Move to Madras or not
"Oh Yeah !" Have you been thinking about the proposal of moving
our Casino to Madras?
Remember that's next on the agenda, on if we should move to
Madras or not. Give it some thought and vizualize the operation and
who would benefit the most from this move? Madras of coursc. It
would bring in business for the townspeople, more important it
would create more employment for that area. How many locals can
safely drive to and from Madras, as the police have taken away most
driving priveledges from the local residents.
If we kept the Casino on the Reservation all th income would come
to the Tribes. Keep it here locally and we won't have to deal with the
state or anyone else.
It will cost no matter where we build it so lets get all the final results
from the Casino here locally.

To the editor,
Hello from Pastor Rick. Hello to
all. Hey, have you noted the cars and
pick-ups with the heavy tinted glass.
Man, there seems to be a lot of them
here in Warm Springs. Why is it that
more and more people want isolation?
They want to be cut-off from others.
Why? You know they had a confer
ence out at Kah-Nee-Ta called
"Kids". I was told one idea from this
program is that Warm Springs has a
lot of resources for people. Yet the
connection between resources is very
lite. Why are the resources in isola
tion? Maybe it is turf protection. Or
fear. The Bible talks about connec
tions between resources. It calls it
"Comm'unity:. The gathering body"
of believers bring to the community
their gifts and abilities. And they
brine their willingness to share
without fear. This Sunday is the
Greatest of celebrations. Easter
Sunday is the reason a Christian

much for supporting "Week of the
Young Child." We appreciate your
investment in our children.
Today we know more than ever
before as to the importance of
children's earliest years in shaping
their learning and development. It is
increasingly clear that an adverse
early environment can compromise
brain function and place children at
greater risk of developing a variety
of cognitive, behavioral and physical
difficulties. The Week of the Young
Child is a time to recommit ourselves
to ensuring that each and every child
receives the type of positive early
environment at home, at Child
Care, at school and in the commu
nity that will promote their early
learning. Making the early years
count as the very best learning years
for all children that what Week of
the Young Child is all about.
Thank you for your time and
support.

"Mind your own business"...
To the editor,
Is it just business? When you are
busy discussing a friend, relative or
person who lives in the community,
have you ever thought to yourself,
"Is this any of my business?" Be
cause, really, what right do any people
have to discuss any business other
than your own? Is it because you are
jealous of this person? You have a
need to make yourself feel better
than someone else and the only way
you can do it is talk about other
people?
A real friend will tell you how it,
a phony friend will sit and listen,
smugly wanting more and not asking
you questions as to why you feel this
way about someone or some par
ticular situation. Gossiping about
people does not get you anywhere. If
you have a problem or a complaint

against someone, talking to them to
their face will help solve the prob
lem. If you can't do this, then your
problem won't go away. Yes, it will
be your problem and only your prob
lem. It is not right to talk about people
behind their back.
Really, you don't know a certain
person's situation. When you hear
about people fighting, remember, it
takes two to fight and you are usually
hearing only one side of the story,
there is always two sides and if you
want to correct one, you should
confront both parties so you can get
the right story. (If this is any of your
business, which it probably is not in
the first place!) Don't judge other
people, you do not have the capacity ,
to judge rightfully. Only God, The
Creator does. The moral of the story
is mind your own business.
