Bureau of Land Management openings
Bureau of Land Management,
Prineville District in Central Oregon
is recruiting for several types of Wild
and Scenic River Positions. Oppor
tunities for river patrol, resource
monitoring, interpretation, camp
ground maintenance are now open
for the coming season. The Prineville
District manages over 400 miles of
Wild and Scenic River in Central
Oregon and has the most diverse and
complex river management programs
in the country. One of the positions
will be assigned to the segment of
river bordering the Confederated
Tribes of the Warm Springs Reser
vation. Information on how to apply
for the positions follows the de
scription of the positions.
Recreation TechnicianRiver Pa
trol, duties will include monitoring
river access sites, permit compliance
checks, patrolling river sections from
class II to IV Whitewater and provid
ing information to river users.
Recreation TechnicianPark Aid
positions will provide campground
monitoring and fee collection, river
permit compliance checks, user edu
cation and information and facilities
maintenance.
Applicants must be 18 years of
age and have a valid driver's license.
They require various levels of expe
rience and education. A background
in natural resources protection and
experience in outdoor recreation are
also desired qualifications. The GS 5
River Patrol applications must have
Whitewater experience and be profi
cient in Class III Whitewater. Both
GS 7 lead Recreation Technicians
must have supervisory experience.
The GS 4 Recreation Technician must
have experience with public contact
and working in outdoor recreation.
Familiarity with floater boating,
fishing and river resources is desir
able for all of these positions.

I On May 8-11, 2000, Native
women from across the United States
and Canada will gather at the
Doubletree Hotel Hayden Island, in
Portland, Oregon for the Nineth
Annual Conference on Wellness and
Women to discuss approaches for
developing a healthy lifestyle.
Sponsored by the University of
Oklahoma College of Continuing
Education, the conference promotes
wellness in the workplace, family
and community. The theme this year
is "Leading our Youth with Gentle
Footsteps". The aim is to encourage
women with healthy lifestyles to
model their wellness to women and
younger generations.
The conference kicks off with a
health fair on Monday May 8. Women
can participate in different wellness
screening activities and free
mammograms are available to all
Native women throughout the con
ference. The conference workshops
include Breast feeding and the
Working Mom, Exercise, Nutrition
and Self Care for the Busy Women;
Menopause with Zest, Creating
Positive Change and Woman's Role
in spirituality. Other sessions include
domestic violence, anger control,
time management, mental wellness,
self-esteem and communication.
Counselors and listeners will be
available throughout the conference.
Other activities will include arts
and crafts sessions, cleansing cer
emonies and fitness activities. Tra
ditional healing sessions will be
available by appointment. Following
the workshops participants will have
an opportunity to meet and greet their
peers during sponsored evening fes
tivities. Participants will have an
opportunity to show their artistic side
at a talent show and participate at the
Millennium Dinner and Dance.

rector Billy Rogers explained "This
year's conference honors the wisdom,
service and contribution of native
women. Taking a leadership position
in modeling wellness includes vi
sion, skills, introspection and pa
tience leadership characteristic of
native traditions."

William "Bill" Christensen
William "Bill" Christensen died
in his sleep at his home in Madras,
Oregon March 22, 2000.
Bill was born in Firth, Idaho on
February 9, 1936 to Ed and Libby
Christensen, both deceased.
Christensen served in the U.S.
Navy in the mid-1 950s, after which
he returned to Eastern Idaho where
he attended Idaho State University,
majoring in Economics.
At ISU Bill met and married
Kathleen Sauter and had two sons.
Edwin Christensen, 37 from New
Jersey with his wife Shanon. Michael
Christensen, 32 from Cape Town,
South Africa with his wife Tania and
their son Jack.
Following his years at ISU, Bill
and Kathy moved to Southern Cali
fornia where he worked for Mobil
Oil Company. The last 25 years he
worked for various Indian Tribes
including the Confederated Tribes
of Warm Springs since 1990.
Bill loved his sons, his friends,
books and staying up late on the
internet.
A memorial service was held at
the Kah-Nee-Ta Village Pavilion
Friday afternoon, March 31, 2000.
