Language Program Update )
Welcome Pat Miller and Elaine Clements to the
Warm Springs Tribal Language Program. As of January
17, 2000, the Language Program has full-filled the dream
of having all three I anguages represented in the Culture
and Heritage Program by teachers who are willing to I
take on the responsibility of maintaining and sustaining
the three languages of the Tribe. i
Pat Miller a fluent speaker, has spoke the Numu ;
language all her life. She has moved from the part time '
position she held for five years to the full time teacher.
She is the wife of Harry Miller, for 25 years and mother t;
three boys and one girl, and plenty of grandchildren.
She has lived in Warm Springs most of her life (21
years) and realizes how important it is to revitalize the i
Numu language. She is especially fond of her class in
the Warm Springs Elementary because of their ability
and willingness to learn the langauge. She is diligently
working on a dictionary and is other resources that she
wants to share with the community. ;'
She emphasizes that learning the language takes
time and committment, and she'd like to see her former
students come back keep trying. f
Elaine Clements .who'is not a fluent in the Wasco
Language has had a desire to teach with the Language I
Program since her participation in the AILDI summer
institute a few years back. She was a teacher with Early
Childhood Education where she first taught the Wasco I
language in a Classroom setting. She realized that the
children are quick and eager to learn not inhibited by ;
making mistakes and learning from them. She has ;
participated in teaching community classes and has
hosted a homebase class. She has been training for thl;
position for many years has the support of the Elders
who consult with the program. She brings her teaching I
experience and another hope of sustaining the Wasco :
Language.
We congratulate and welcome these ladies to the
program. To learn more about these ladies drop by and
visit them about their classes and encourage them with 1
kind words.
