ILIUM f" ' V i Warm Springs, Oregon held on Sunday, October 3, Sunday, October 3, was a beauti ful fall day, and on campus a small cluster of people (kids and adults) gathered to show respect and appre ciation for their pets, and to thank them with the help of Sister Pauline, for all their kindness and love. It was the second annual Blessing of the Animals in Warm Springs. This even is celebrated in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi's love for all crea tures on his feast day of October 4. Here is some of Sister Pauline's message at the Blessing of the Ani mals: "Creator God, we praise you for this lovely day-for the blue sky, the warm sunshine, the flowers and the tall trees. We thank you because you have made a world that is so beauti ful and wonderful. When we think about the size of the universe, when we hear the thunder, watch the horses galloping, or sit beside a flooding river, we remember what a great and powerful God you are. And then we see the little things like the patterns of a butterfly's wing, the colors of a fish, a bird feeding her babies, an ant working hard, a spider making a beau tiful web, or a mouse building a soft bed for her family, and then we know that as well as being a very powerful God, you care about little things: little cats and dogs, and insects and bugs and hamsters and very special little people. We thank you for giv ing us all these animals and birds and fish and insects to help us be happy. Help us to take good care of every thing and everybody you made. And if we have hurt any of them, please forgive us. Amen." Then Sister Pauline read a story- -Saint Francis and the Wolf- a wolf that had been terrorizing the people Church to celebtrate 125th To the editor, Hello from Pastor Rick. I am pleased to announce that on October 31 at 7 p.m. we will be celebrating the 125th birthday of the Warm Springs Presbyterian church. We are going to have a birthday party at the church. It won't be really long-it is still a school night. But we are going to have games, prizes and a cake to' ' ' cut and eat. So co'me'ahd'wi'sh'us' a'' 'X happy birthday.'-' '.';""?"""- Y"t Here is other news of the church. There is a cancer support group that meets here in Warm Springs and in Madras. It's purpose is to prove in formation and support for anyone who is in the midst of wrestling with the disease of cancer. It is also there to provide support for families. If you have cancer you do not have to be alone. All praise and applause to the Tribal Council for passing a seat belt law for the community. Wearing a seat belt is not a white world issue, Indian world issue, or rural county issue. It is an issue of science. When an object, a person, seats inside a box, a car, when the box stops the object inside keeps inside keeps moving forward. You have got to hold down the object inside to pro tect it. Hey, how about a seat belt. Great News and Thanks Tribal Coun cil. I must make comment about all of the funerals we have been having in the community. Please to one and all Family thanks community for support in their The family of Ellen Johnson would like to thank the community for their support in our walk for diabetes on September 25, 1999. Carmen Smith, of a city called Gubbio. While Francis was staying in that town, he learned of a wolf so raven ous that it was not only killing and eating animals, but people too. The people took up arms and went after it, but hose who encountered the wolf perished at it's sharp teeth. Villagers became afraid to leave the city walls. Francis had pity on the people and decided to go out and meet the wolf. He was warned of the danger, but he insisted that he would be safe. A brave friar and several peasants ac companied Francis outside the city gate. But soon the peasants lost heart and said they would go no farther. Francis and his companion began to walk on. Suddenly the wolf, jaws agape charged out of the woods at the couple. Francis signaled the wolf to slow down and to close it's mouth. Then Francis called out: "Come to me, Brother Wolf. I ask you not to hurt anyone." At that moment, the wolf lowered it's head and lay down at St. Francis's feet, meek as a lamb. St. Francis explained to the wolf that he had been terrorizing the people, killing not only the little ani mals in the forest, but also farm ani mals and people. "Brother Wolf," said St. Francis, "I want to make peace between you and the people of Gubbio. They will harm you no more and you must no longer harm them. All past crimes are to be forgiven." The wolf showed it's assent by moving its body and nodding its head. Then to the absolute surprise of the gathering crowd, Francis asked the wolf to make a pledge. As St. Francis extended his hand to receive the pledge, so the wolf extended it's front paw and placed it into Francis's hand. Then Francis asked the wolf to fol- continue to pray for all of the fami lies who are in grief. Their struggle begins when the services are over and life is suppose to go back to normal. So you see it is important to go and ask family how are you do ing? And be a good listener. Also I want to thank the people of tribal utilities, the police, Longhouse cooks, and others who work very hard be hind the scenes to make a funeral happen in a loving worshipful way. Special prayers to family who must make at times, really hard decisions about the medical care for a loved one. Do not take on guilt to your life. Make the call between you, the pa tient and your God. I tell the community of Warm Springs that I went down to the rap concert on Friday and Saturday nights to listen to the music. What I heard was cursing and a message that women were sexual tools and slaves to men. With our record of domestic violence I hope and pray we will do better to not give our young people such trash to feed their minds. The Warm Springs Church is lo cated on the campus area. Christian Education is Sunday morning at 10 a.m. Worship at 11 a.m. Sunday evening worship and study at 7 p.m. Youth study on Tuesday nights 7 p.m. (seventh grade and up). And Women group on Wednesday nights 6 p.m. See you in church. Rev. Rick. R. Ribeiro Suyenn Smith, Greg Stinson, Theliah Henry, Tyrna Muilenburg, Gwen Leonard, WSFPI and Indian Head Casino. We apologize if we have missed mentioning anyone. In total we raised $777. 10 for the American Diabetes Association. The following are those that helped with the fund raiser: Colleen Johnson, Carolyn Johnson, Theron Johnson, Judy Johnson, Althea Henry, Wally Lujan, Laurain Hintsala, Bev Surface, Leah Henry, Tiffiney Henry, Martha Winishut and Joe Henry. The day ofthe walk, September 25th, was Ellen's birthday. Ellen suffered a great deal of her life with diabetes and the illnesses it caused her. It was important for her family to get 1999 low him into town to make a peace pact with the townspeople. The wolf calmly followed St. Francis. By the time they got to the town square, everyone was there to wit ness the miracle. With the wolf at his side, Francis offered the townspeople peace, on behalf of the wolf. The townspeople promised to feed the wolf. Then Francis asked the w olf if he would live in peace under those terms. He bowed his head and twisted his body in a way that convinced everyone he accepted the pact. Then once again the wolf placed it's paw in Francis's hand as a sign of the pact. From that day on the people kept the pact they had made. The wolf lived for two years among the towns people, going from door to door for food. It hurt no one, and no none hurt it. Even the dogs did not bark at it. When the wolf finally died of old age, the people of Gubbio were sad. The wolfs peaceful ways had been a living reminder to them of the won ders of the natural world. There are other churches and faiths that also have ceremonies to honor animas. In many religions and belief systems, the paradox that each living creature is unique and therefore sepa rate, but simultaneously part of a larger circle of life, is addressed. When we focus on differences (any differences!) in a critical way, we become more separate from each other and from other beings. This separation often leads to fear-and fear can lead to misunderstandings and anger. When we focus on the similarities shared by all living be ings, we can feel empathy and sym pathy for others, we can understand the actions of other people, and we can even stop to listen. I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the Family Science Night event at Warm Springs Elementary school hosted by OSU SMILE (Science and Math Investigative Learning Experi ences). SMILE is an enrichment pro gram for disadvantaged students in grades 4-12 that currently has clubs in the Warm SpringsMadras El ementary, Middle and High Schools. I was not familiar with the pro cram or it's participants so I did not know what to expect. What I saw was incredible! I saw students ex cited about sharing their know ledge, I saw teachers supporting learning on multiple levels, I saw interested community members and I saw proud parents, Now THAT is a hard find these days. For those of you who have not witnessed the excitement of a child engaged in explaining a scientific experiment or leading other students in a hands-on activity or just having FUN in a non-violent and healthy manner, I urge you to check out the local SMILE club. I guarantee that you will see it all! Sincerely, Bernadette Ilandley Family & Community Dev. Agent OSU ExtensionWarm Springs Thank you firefighters To the editor, Special Thanks.
