Thanks to our team and sponsors
To the editor,
I apologize for the delay in get
ting this letter out. It's been a really
hectic time for everyone. I especially
want to apologize to the team mem
bers and to our sponsors for being so
slow!
Well, we went and did it again!
We had a team entered in the annual
Hood to Coast Relay Run, held over
the week-end of August 27-29, 1999.
I got to work with a great bunch of
people this year. The runners were
Cal Poncho, Naomi Dick, Robyne
Ike, Chip Calica, Heddy Engel,
Shawn Harry, Tray & Monica
Leonard, Vernon "Wolfman"
Suppah, Cecil Dick, Kerri Lopez and
Cami Lewis. I really appreciate the
fact that Vernon and Cami were last
minute recruits. I'm surely glad they
were able to run with the tarn. Every
one did a great job. I appreciate
everyone's understanding when we
had to do some last minute changes
in the leg assignments. Hopefully,
everyone felt that it was worth the
effort to try to change our strategy
this year. Basically, in previous years

We had some major changes in
the roster right at the end. We had 4

We've already gotten promises from
a couple of people to buy vans before

I would like to thank our sponsors

Every year, we are able to do this

and know that this has never hap

busy looking for the negatives about
community members that the posi
tive traits are often overlooked.
The fact that you struggled through
both the Army and college while
raising kids is overlooked when a
false bit of information is given. Even
though you care more about this res

be a positive asset for any commu

immediate impact wherever you

Dear Mr. Jackson:
This letter is written regarding the
Micro Grant money that I applied for
in 1998. At the end of 1998, 1 was
told the "Grant" money had run out,
but I was being put on the "waiting
list" until more funding was avail
able. I was told by Mitch Connally, of
Small Business, that I had a good
business plan to open a Barber Shop
and that he was recommending that it
be approved. He also stated that I
was thirteenth (13th) on the "list",
for the money. Which will be used
for equipment, that I could be using
at the school I am attending now for
. barbering.
Then, I was told that funds would
be available after the first part of
1999, after the trouble caused by
Public Safety personnel was resolved.
I had to apply for a personal loan to
continue at the school, after I had
taken a necessary medial leave of
absence. Which, a certain credit man
ager turned down, at first, even
though I had letters for the school
that I was still accepted and what I
owed the Credit department was
down. After going over her head,
with other letters from the school and
with the help of a few people, she
reluctantly "OK'd" the personal loan,
but hacked off some of what I asked
for. I don't know why, since I have to
pay it back. Was this her last "dig" to
try to make things more difficult?
I've take part-time jobs, to keep go
ing to school.
Then, I was told by someone at
the Small Business Office, the Micro
Memorial & namegiving set Oct. 29
and 30

shares small business story
Grants were being held up, because
of some kind of shortage of funds.
Did the twelve (12) people ahead of
me get most of it? Or where did the
funds go? I've heard managers of
other departments tell others that
Small Business has funds, but the
people involved with Small Busi
ness tell another story.
Now, I was told the Grant Board
is requiring their business courses be
taken. These courses are part of this
schooling I'm taking. Other Tribal
members have told me about the ob
stacles that they have had to get over
and when they get over one, this
"group" just throws up another one,
for them to get over.
Why is this group of "experts"
making things so difficult for Tribal
Members? Are they trying to dis
courage everybody so much that the
people will just give up? And there
would be more funds for just a "cho
sen few"? The people know that when
this "hoop" is jumped through, an
other "hoop" will be there. Are they
trying to get the people to give up, to
cover up a misuse of funds? My
application, like the others, were rec
ommended for approval before this
snag.
Others have told me what was
actually said by a Board member
after she got her manager position. It
shows to me that his "group" is on
one BIG POWER TRIP. Real pro
fessionalism. Did this Grant money
come from the Federal Government
or the State? It would be even worse
if it was Tribal funds. Tribal Mem
bers being denied their own money,
by a few "professional experts."

To the editor,
Dear Tribal Members & Tribal
descendants: As some of you know
my father and Klamath Tribal Mem
ber, Joseph F. Coburn, passed away
in May of this year. During my
father's career he worked as Director
for the Northwest Regional Educa
tional Laboratory in Portland, Or
egon. He helped to develop The In
dian Reading Series. A series of grade
school books published and distrib
uted between 1977 and 1981 in the
Northwest Tribal Grade Schools, I
am looking to obtain copies of these
8 12" x 11" paperback readers as a
keepsake of my father's work.
There are six levels with 18-20
books in each level. I have Level I,
but would like to complete the entire
series. If you have information on
where I might be able to obtain read
ers from Levels II, III, IV, V and VI
or the Teacher's Manuals for these
Levels, I would like you to contact
me. Thank you for your time.

Operations Officer (COO) concern
ing my business venture. Others, In
dian and non-Indian, have all been
encouraged me to start my business,
but how can I, without proper equip
ment and having to make do with
what I have.
With a bigger population on the
Reservation, jobs are more limited.
Does this "certain" group want the
People to wait in line at the Mill? I' ve
heard the ideas of other Tribal Mem
bers, and they sound good to me.
They all were enthusiastic and will
ing to work on their ideas. I believe
given a chance they could all do it.
That was awhile back, no w you sense
a "what's the use " attitude. Is that
what management wanted? Seems
that if the People in charge didn't
think of it, it was a bad idea. Then,
later certain people would just "hap
pen" to get a bright idea, and get
backing. While in school the owner
told me some gal from Warm Springs
called to check out the school. When
she told me what this person said, I
swear it was word for word what my
letter to Education said, when I first
decided to do this.
Non-Indians have traveled
through Warm Springs have asked
me, "ho w many Indians live in Warm
Springs, and what do they do?" All
they see is a store and gas stations
and restaurant. Wasn't one of the
Tribal Council's priorities, to pro
mote more business on the reserva
tion, owned by Tribal Members? If
that was true, why all the obstacles?
Why the "hoops"? Or were they just
more empty politician's promises for
votes? Please advise.
