Sunlight Solar Energy is announc
ing the beginning of the SOLAR
SERIES seminars. The series is de
signed to introduce the general pub
lic to solar photvoltaics. Solar Pho
tovoltaic or PV is using the sun's
energy to produce electricity.
Starting Saturday morning, Octo
ber 9th at 9 a.m., instructor Dick
Kent will demonstrate solar electric
panels and discuss solar technolo
gies available. Also covered Satur
day will be batteries, inverters, basic
systems for homes and recreational
vehicles, and finally an actual hook
up of a small system.
The lecture will be held outside to
utilize the demonstration power of
the sun.

Warm Springs National fish Hatch
ery (NFH-) is open for candidates to
apply. The hatchery is located ap
proximately 15 miles north of the
town of Wann Springs; 5 miles west
of K-h-Nee-Ta Resort, on the Warm
Springs River. The hatchery supports
a staff of 6 full time employees.
The hatchery raises approximately
750,000 Spring chinook salmon. The
hatchery is cooperatively managed
by the US. Hsh K Wilcllite service
with the Confederated Tribes of the
Reservation of Oregon.
The successfu 1 candidate wiLt be
required to work some weekends,
holidays and nights. The employee
will be required to rent and occupy
government furnished quarters on the
hatchery grounds. The employee

A letter from a Marine
As long as there arc people such as
yourselves there is hope for our brother
and sister veterans.
I served with the Marines from '65
to '68. One tour in Nam, July '67
through August '68, then came home.
That's when my real war began. Alien
ation from friends and society, disin
herited by my family, divorce and the
ANGER - RAGE!
Spent twenty two years as a Police
Officer, 14 of those as a Sergeant.
Spent a lot of time on the carpet "talk
ing " to the Chief. Bad attitude I was
told. Took the front door off of the old
station in three pieces. Sent to a crimi
nal psychiatrist for that one with three
days medical leave. Spent three years
going to a Police Stress Counselor;

5th Annual Oregon
The Fifth Annual Oregon Hay and
Straw Feed Fair will be held at the
Dairy Barn at the "NEW" Deschutes
County Fairgrounds, Redmond, Or
egon on Saturday, October 16, 1999.
The Third Annual Hay and Straw
King Contest will be held along with
the Hay and Straw Fair. Last year
there were 48 entries in the Hay &
Straw King contest. The winners have
bragging rights for the year!!!
For producers with hay to sell,
reserve your space, and bring in a
bale or two of each hay lot you have
for sale. There is a $35 fee per pro
ducer or feed businesses (OHFA or
AFA members - free) to
market your hay, straw, or feed at
the Hay and Straw Fair. Come and
showcase some of your best and
maybe even some of your "not the
best". Last year there were a lot of
potential buyers, local and state wide,
including hay and straw exporters,
who came to the Fair. Producers
marketing theirproduct need to bring
a bale or two of each lot of hay they
wish to sell (and quality information
is helpful, but optional). There will
be hay and straw for sale during the

ber 29, at his home of natural causes.

you're stressed out, you need to calm
down, you care loo much. I'm saying
to myself, "These people haven't got a
clue. I'm fine but you are all really
screwed up. I don't need any of you.
Second marriage, two beautiful
daughters. I still can't understand why
I can't control my temper. It just comes
on instantly. 1 feci the storm gathering
but by the time I realize what's happen
ing I'm totally out of control. Blow up
break something, sit outside or locked
in my room with my sidennn trying to
get up the nerve to put an end to the
pain I'm causing other people. "This is
the way out, I WANT TO LIVE BUT
NOT IF I'M GOING TO HURT
PEOPLE.' Pout for two weeks, won't
talk to anyone, then the guilt. Apolo
gize tocveryonc sheepishly . One month
later it stiirts all over again. If I cold
only get some sleep.
Things at work really gelling worse.
All you poor souls out there on the
streets stealing, raping, killing, com
plaining because your stupid car got
scratched, or that the power went off
and you can't watch TV. What do you
know? I HATE YOU ALL AND I
CAN'T TAKE ANYMORE!
Don't talk much at home very much
now; wile and daughters are afraid
they'll set me off again.
Then BOOM! Injured on duty; 8
hours of major neck surgery later I'm
no longer a Cop, no longer employed,
end of macho. Nine months recovery
from surgery. A lot of physical pain on
lip of emotional pain ENOUGH!
Four years later I go out to the

October's workshop features Wil
liam H. Burke, a Chief and elder of
the Walla Walla Tribe of the Confed
erated Tribes of Umatilla. A former
teacher and educator, Chief Burke is
the Northwest representative to the
National Indian Council on Aging,
and is nationally known for his work
on issues related to the Hanford
Nuclear Site.

proceeds going to support the elders.

Hay & Straw Feed

For the Hay and Straw King Con
test, there will be six classes of hay
and straw to be judged; based on lab
quality analysis and visual appear
ance. The classes are alfalfa, alfalfa
grass, grass, cereal, cereallegume,
and grass seed straw. Lots within the
grass and alfalfa classes are first,
second, third, or fourth cuttings.
There will be prizes awarded, to the
Hay King Class Winner, along with
a plaque, and a COHGA cap (last
years Alfalfa Hay King winner won
approximately $500 in prizes).
Producers need to bring in one
bale of each cutting of each hay they
want to enter on the day of the Hay
and Feed Fair; the bales need to be in
place, ready to judge by 9:00 a.m.
October 16th. The Hay
Fair will begin at 10:00 a.m. and
end at 4:00 p.m.
Entrants must have their hay qual
ity samples to the OSU Crook County
Extension Office by October First.

Bob worked for lOyears for Wann
Springs Forest Products and then be
came self-employed owning and driv
ing his own truck. For three years,
Bob and Myrtle enjoyed traveling
together while they both drove the
truck as a "team" hauling loads for
customers, they have been in every
state except four and the Canadian
provinces.
Bob was a member of the Elks
Lodge No. 2017 in Madras.

the Klamath Experiment station for
quality analysis utilizing NIRS. Pro

our Oregon hay and straw, and very
educational to both producers and
the public. The Hay and Straw Fair
and Hay & Straw King Contest is
sponsored by the Oregon Hay and

University Extension Service.

Mitchell, OR and two granddaugh

He was preceded in death by his
father, Richard "Dick" Daugherty
and a daughter Bonnie Daugherty.
