SpilyayTymoo Warm Springs, Oregon July 15, 1999 3 E Coosh EEWA: Tlie way it is Missed the NAJA meeting in Seattle, WA., July 8, 9, 10, 1999. This was the "Unity 99, convention which included the Native American, Hispanic, Asian and the Black Journanilts from across the country. It was reported that a record number of participants, around 7,000 who were in attencance. This year marked the 15th annavesery of the Native American Journalists Association, (NAJA). Brings back some fond memories of when the first meeting was held in Perm State University, College Town, Pennsylvania. It all started when the Journalism Professor sent out invitations to several Indian News Editors to meet on the Campus and discuss a possibility of establishing of this nature. The Professor was William Dulaney. It's been years since he has made the scene, but he is never forgotten. The two day meeting at Perm State concluded with a group called the Native American Press Association, (NAPA). In the beginning the roads were rough and rocky, but the few of us took the bumps right along determined to get this association a going to where today the Association is called, "The Native American Journalists Association," and is doing real well, but at first it was no picnic, as we would travel from one part of the country to another trying to recruit members to get the association on its feet. There were several individuals who were reluctant to join this elite group of editors, as they would day they didn't think this would work because there had been several groups in the past who tried to get something like this going but only folded after a short time. But that didn't discourage the few of us who were doing what ever we could to make this work. We met in Colorado, Pheonix, Reno, Tucson, Portland, Oklahoma and a few more places and some how we were able to get a foot hold and started in the right direction. I can still see those faces who stuck things out working hard to get this organization On itS feet. ..-:.. -..n i. : ,;.-..:..,;....,.,.,.,,... Like I said we had meetings in different parts of the country on reservations or in government buildings to cut costs and one place still sticks out in my mind and that was the time we met in Tuskahoma, Oklahoma, near MacAllister, way out in the boonies where no one told the grounds keeper that we were going to be staying there for a few days, so when 5 O'Clock came he shut down all the power, and utilities and went home for the night, and here we were left with no power of any kind, no running water, we were like up that creek you know, with out a paddle. It was very interesting, we with no means of lights or water, but we intertained our selves by chasing Armadilla's aroung the campus that night. Yep! It was quite a ways out in the country but we made it out in flying colors. We went on with our meeting as though nothing had happened at all. It was comical after everything was over, but at the time it was a little diaturbing. ', One thing I can say for all the meetings we had in different parts of the country is that we got to see a lot of the other reservations and the country side. We had a meeting in Rapid City, So. Dakota, and that was the first time I got to see Mt. Rushmore, and the construction site of that monument of "Chief Crazyhorse." We moved our head office several times finally we settled in Boulder, Colorado, for a short spell, because it was a fairly centerally located area. It was hard to really decide where the best location would be because of the officers who were active at that time. No matter where we would discuss there wouled be some who would have a long way to travel, but Boulder seemed to be the place at that time. All down those earlier years we've had some great times at our annual meetings, one of our first meetings was held at our Resort here at Kah-Nee-Ta, and there are so many comical stories that goes along with every place, we've been. At one meeting the board decided it was my birthday and told the proprietors that we were having a party and they gave us a big discount, they even had girls come to my table and sing to me. Ocourse I ate that stuff up!! Pretty girls giving me all that attention. "It was A-Okey!!" Of course in the beginning there is always problems on having a perfect gathering. We are just a hundred miles from the Portlant Airport, but we managed to get all the participants to the meeting. Well today everything is going on the right track and that's all that matters to me, which mekes me real happy for all those who are carrying the ball now and the road is much smoother now eventhough there might be a few bumps here and there. I was disheartened to miss this great meeting in Seattle, Unity 99, but I hope to see you all at the next NAJA convention. Easy Credit Plan: 100 down:. Nothing to pay each month." Finally, Mable was tired, Mablc wanted to be with "Margie" and her husband "Bill Eyle" in the promised land. Well, I hope she's there now and that "Margie & Bill" and God are taking care of her now. We all miss you Grandma Mable, I will miss your quietness, smile and laughter. In ending, I would like to thank the people who helped out and supported and gave guidance to my mother Lena T. Santos, a very big "Thank you" to Pat, Tanawasha for leading the Shaker services and for Six steps to help : your teenager l To the editor, ! Hello from Pastor Rick. The final session on teens is passing on the faith. Spirituality is a major part of life. Without a walk with God the person is not whole. So how does a parent share the fullness of God to a teen? First: Principles-Weave the truths of the bible into the discussions of life. DO NOT BIBLE THUMP. SHARE. 'I Second: Pattern. All teens and kids learn by watching you. Third: Be persistent. Keep the weaving of life going and the pattern of life consistent. Fourth: Participation. Get in volved with your teen's life. Do things with them. Fifth: Praise. Praise God and praise your teen. Sixth: Prayer. Pray with your kids...Read II Timothy 1:3-5 and II Timothy 3:14-15 for the passing of the faith. - Let us praise and pray for the continued work of the staff of the Warm Springs Elementary School for the July school program. Even a Bar-B-Q can start a killing fire. No tobacco or beer for kids. Buckle-up the little ones. Hugs not Hits. Love and be loved. See you in church. Rev. Rick R.
