4 July 3, 1999 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo E Coosh EEWA: Tiie way it is SVIliY-Y There arc so many things that happen during the month of June, where a person could just ramble along from one topic to another of all the events that take place. The High School graduation's around the country is one of the biggest events and here it was no problem as the senior class received their diplomas with several outstanding students during the year. A lot of pride and joy for both students and parents alike, including the grand parents, can't forget them. Each year the senior class grows a little larger, as the population is on an up swing in Central Oregon, This year from the Warm Springs Elementary school there were 99 students graduated to the middle school in Madras. Just think of the size of that class when they are seniors as there are a great number of kids from Madras, Metolius and the surrounding area. If there isn't too much drop outs the class will be large. With the 99 students from Warm Springs who knows how many students there are around Madras. Of course there will be a few who will be going away to boarding schools, but that's just a few. Just think when the students from Warm Springs first started to integrate in Madras, there was just a suburban that bussed the kids to school as compared to the number of students who ride the bus each day, to and from school. There are a number of busses for the middle school and on up through high school.. The classes are growing so large that soon the kids won't know all the kids in their class.. In the early days the high school was referred to as Madras Union High School. Each class was relatively low in numbers and was in the "Class B," category for sports activities, Even as small as Madras was they still faced the mighty Lava Bears, the Redmond Panthers, and the Crook County Cowboys, who were all "Class a, bcnoois. ine DasKetDaii schedule included the above names mentioned along with Burns Hilanders, Grant Union Prospectors, Lakeview Honkers, Maupin Redsides, Moro Huskies, Arlington Honkers, Condon Bluedevfrs, and some non-league teams from the Valley. Those road trips were something else, as we'd trudge along in a school bus which seemed to take for ever to get to Burns and Lakeview, or to any school for mat matter. The big district play-offs were held at The Dalles High school gym, and at that time that gym seemed like the Rose Garden compared to the small gyms around the country. The Two not so bright guys pooled their money together and bought an expensive bird dog. They took him to the country to try him out. After several futile hours, one of them said, "I'm so disgusted, I think I'll shoot him." "Give him one more chance," the other replied. "You throw him up in the air one more time, and if he still doesn't fly, we'll go and get our money back." YIKES SS SS Editor's Note Spilyay Tymoo welcomes articles and letters from its readers. S times have changed and the whole area has changed as seen at the present time, The Rose Festival is another big event in Oregon, with all the glamour and festivities in and around the City of Portland. This year the Rose Parade went on right on schedule with crowded streets where some spectators Sat all night just to get a good view of the parade. It was an ideal day weatherwise for a good parade, with marching bands from all across the country and the floats all decked out on a sunny day. Each year Spirit Mountain has a float in the parade which makes a big hit among the spectators and is good advertisement for that establishment for the Grand Rounde Tribe. Why can't Indian ; Head have something like that in the Rose Parade? A few years ago the Tribal Council used to have floats in the Rose Parade, what's happened? It would be good to see something from "Springs," in the parade. p0w Wows spring up across the country in June, as just recently the Pow Wow at Delta Park drew a good number of spectators and contestants, one 0f the best Pow Wows seen there for quite some time. It g0es to show that if you live in a large city or in the country, if You are an Indian you will always want a pow wow. Pt-Um-Sha days come to Warm Springs in June, commemorating the Treaty signing of 1 855. Sometimes the thought comes to mind, "Why Hr uf pplphrntp that pvpntf" when we ceded all that land to the United States Government and were placed on this reservation. I guess its a reason to have a pow wow. People will be here by the hundreds to see the events. There will be arodeo, endurance horse race, golf tournament, softball tournament, basketball tournament, out of doors, a 10 K run, stick game tournament. Yep! there is just about anything for everyone during the Pi-Um-Sha days. I also learned how good it feels to be my Hello from Paster Rick Let us continue to talk about teens. We as parents need to talk love, yet there are some traps that we parents fall into that scramble the message. Trap 1 . We assume that what worked before will work now. A seven year old is different from a seventeen year old. Trap 2. Put downs. "I don't like that shirt," can be heard by your teen as "I don't like you. "Trap 3. Mini mizing feeling. A statement of you will find another boyfriendgirlfriend. Tells a teen their feelings are not worth taking seriously. The event may be not great in the history of things, but pain is huge. Trap 4. Assuming that a mature body means a mature mind. Teens thinking is in the process of adopting adult patterns of logic(thinking). W parents listen to their thinking and in our own way say to the teens that their thinking is stupid. Therfore the teens is stupid. All four traps basically tells us par Happy Birthday to my Big Bro Tracy R.
