Relay for Life set for July 17-18 in Madras
A unique fundraiser- the American
Cancer Society's Relay For Life- is
coming to Madras in July. The
fundraiser takes place from 10 in the
morning on Saturday, July 17, until
10 the following morning.
Relay For Life participants
organize in teams of 8 to 12 people,
who take turns traveling around the
quarter-mile track at Madras High
School, relay-style for a full 24 hours.
Teams from businesses, churches,
civic groups and families join the fun
of the overnight campout, enjoying
food, entertainment, games and the
camaraderie that comes from
supporting a good cause.
Each team member is asked to
raise $100 in sponsorship money to
participate in the event, and those
who raise money will earn prizes.
Team members take turns
walking, running, dancing or
skipping around the track throughout
the day and night. This is an event for
athletic and non-athletic individuals
alike.
The funds are for the American
Cancer Society, and will support
education and patient services in
Jefferson County, and cancer
research elsewhere in Oregon.
On Saturday, all day long, to keep
people busy and having fun, there
will be activities like volleyball, a
scavenger hunt, a tent decorating
contest, lap poker early in the
morning hours, livemusic.children's
activities, the limbo and more.
As night falls, luminaries
surrounding the track are lit to honor
the brave survivors and loved ones
we've lost in the battle. Relay For
Life asks for a $5 donation for each
luminary.
The American Cancer Society is
reaching out to Jefferson County
residents to join in the fight against
the second- leading cause of death in
the U.S.
Anyone wishing to participate may
pick up a captain's packet at Willow
Creek Books in downtown Madras or
from the Warm Springs Health &
Wellness Center, 1270 Kot-num
Road( ask for Michele Gemelas).
The Jefferson County Relay For
Life last year was a huge success!
There were II teams with over 132
participants raising over $ 1 8,000 and
144 luminaries purchased.
