Leana Tom to the head a'nd TonTdTeen to the heals, as the team making a very "fast time and was good
enough to place in the team roping event.
Roping ; in Hcrmiston Liana placed
4th in the Breakaway and her and
Tony placed 5lh in the Team Roping
and her second Rookie award. At her
home town rodeo Liana placed 3rd in
the Breakaway roping; At John Day
Liana placed 2nd in the Breakaway,
2nd in the team roping and again won
Rookie; After looking at the total
points for Rookie of the Year Liana
discovered that she was within 14
points, just doing the two events and
decided to throw in Barrel Racing
and Pole Bending at the last few
rodeos to see if she could pick up
extra noints. It worked at Klamath
Falls she placed 6th in the Pole
Bending, 6th in the Breakaway
Roping and again won the Rookie
award. Finally at the last Rodeo in
Ontario she placed 7th in the Pole
Bending and 2nd in the breakaway
and one more rookie award. At the
last four rodeos her Team Roping
partner had a broken leg, but was
able to rope at the last two rodeos. To
wrap up the year Liana and Tony are
going into the State Finals as the
second place team. Liana is also
qualified in third place in the
breakaway ronine with the top three
girls just a few points difference and
is sitting in second place in Rookie
standings with four points separating
the top two.
Just being consistent and placing
consistently has paid off for Liana.
She is the only Rookie girl going to
the State Finals in the Team Roping
event. At the end of State Finals they
will take the top four winners on to
Nationals to be held in Gillette,
Wyoming.
Liana Tom, would like to invite
everyone to watch her at the Oregon
State High School Rodeo Finals, June
18-20, 1999 at the Prineville Rodeo
Grounds.
Liana was a Freshman at Madras
High School this past year but
competed in High School Rodeo with
the Central Oregon Club out of
Redmond, OR. Rodeo and winning
just seem to run in the Tom Family.
Liana is the daughter of Lee & Cheryl
Tom and the sister of Justin and
Kristen Tom. She is the
granddaughter of the late Elmer Tom
and Jazzy Wewa, now doesn't that
say something for where all her talent
comes from.
In September at Liana's first high
school rodeo in Condon,
discouragement and disappointment
seemed to be the highlight of her
weekend. Liana missed her calf and
steer in the roping events, couldn't
get her horse in the arena in the barrel
racing and then proceeded to knock a
barrel over, she fell on her goat and
faired average on her pole run.
However, we all choked it up to being
a nervous rookie. There were three
fall rodeos, Liana placed consistently
in the team roping and break away
events in the top 10 for points at the
next rodeo in Roseburg and then at
the last fall rodeo in Burns Liana
decided to show that she does have
some talent and leave the fall season
winning the Team Roping with Tony
Green and the Breakaway events and
her first Rookie award, which was a
nice jacket.
As the Spring season rolled around
Liana decided to concentrate on the
two events she felt she is the best at
and enjoyed the most "Team Roping
and Breakaway Calf Roping". Liana
felt pretty confident in the Team
Roping as her partner Tony Green (
the son of Tom & Susie Green and
the Grandson of Jean Green from
Madras), was leading the Team
Roping and Calf Roping events in
the State Standings. At the Eugene
Rodeo, Liana and Tony placed 8th;
at McMinville Liana placed 10th in
the Breakaway; at Roseburg, Liana
and Tony placed 4th in the Team

Leana Tom, a freshman in high school has been doing real well in the rodeo game, here she is in the
Breakaway 'roping and is placing in the event and qualify for the state finals.
