' - Warm Springs, Madras, and Westslde elementary fourth grade girls The Warm Springs and Madras fourth grade students from each of their schools got a chance to get to know each other a little more before the summer gets underway with a track meet that went on a the Madras High School track. Both the schools had a lot of fun running around the track and competing in many events. Field events included the boys and girls shot put, high jump, long jump, and triple jump. Track events included the boys and girls 50m dash, the 400m, 800m, and the 4x100 relay. : ' Jacoba Smith did really well for the Warm Springs girls winning the 800 meter, coming in second in the 400 meter, and tying for first in the girls shot put. The fundraiser takes place from 10 in the morning on Saturday, July 17, until 10 the following morning. Relay For Life participants organize in teams of 8 to 12 people, who take turns traveling around the quarter-mile track at Madras High School, relay-style for a full 24 hours. Teams from businesses, churches, civic groups and families join the fun of the overnight campout, enjoying food, entertainment, games and the camaraderie that comes from supporting a good cause. Each team member is asked to raise $100 in sponsorship money to participate in the event, and those who raise money will earn prizes. Team members take turns WARM SPRINGS, OREGON and Madras fourth grade students had a lot of fun during the Buff Invitational Westside came in fourth and Ursula Russel from Warm Springs finished in fifth place. In the boys 800 meter Anthony Adams from Westside finished in first place followed by fellow school mate Cory Carriol. In the girls 400 meter Mirian Fisher from Madras finished in first place followed by Jacoba Smith who came in second. In the boys 400 meter Mark Wuasch from Madras won followed by Anthony Adams. Orlando Tewee came in fourth place, from Warm, Springs. ;. ir, , , , '" Inthegirls50meterdashElizabeth Stovall finished first. Katie Smith and Shirelle Adams both tied for second. In the boys 50 meter dash Jansen Harrington from Madras was the winner followed by Bobby Thurby from Warm Springs. In the girls long jump Hayley Nye walking, running, dancing or skipping around the track throughout the day and night. This is an event for athletic and non-athletic individuals alike. The funds are for the American Cancer Society, and will support education and patient services in Jefferson County, and cancer research elsewhere in Oregon. On Saturday, all day long, to keep people busy and having fun, there will be activities like volleyball, a scavenger hunt, a tent decorating contest, lap poker early in the morning hours, live music, children's activities, the limbo and more. As night falls, luminaries surrounding the track are lit to honor the brave survivors and loved ones we've lost in the battle. Relay For Life asks for a $5 donation for each line up for the 400 meter that they came in first while Ursula Russel jumped far enough to finish second. Bobby Thurby won the boys long jump with Jansen Harrington right behind him in second. Orlando Tewee skied his way into first in the high jump with Alfredo Orozoco coming in fourth. Girls high jump places were unavailable. Nancy Charley won the girls triple jump with Elizabeth Stovall coming in second. Jonathan Lydy was the winner in the boys triplejump with Aaron Smith ' right behind him in second. Relay scores1' were " aljo unavailable. ' ' All the kids had a really good time being out in the sun and making new friends for next year. They also got the chance to meet their new fifth grade teachers for the upcoming year. luminary. The American Cancer Society is reaching out to Jefferson County residents to join in the fight against the second- leading cause of death in the U.S. Anyone wishing to participate may pick up a captain's packet at Willow Creek Books in downtown Madras or from the Warm Springs Health & Wellness Center, 1270 Kot-num Road( ask for Michele Gemelas). The Jefferson County Relay For Life last year was a huge success! There were 11 teams with over 132 participants raising over $ 1 8,000 and 144 luminaries purchased. The three who participated were Kira Langnese, Michael Manning, and Ashlyn Lofting. ' Michael Manning, a sophomore, came up big in the 1,500 meter run winning the state title with a time of 4:04:59. ', ; of three to go to state track Ashlyn Lofting was the only other Madras athlete to compete and ended up in 13th place in the Discuss, the same way she ended up last year. She was disappointed in her performance and says that she still has a year left to return to the state meet and hopefully do better than the last two years.
