What's the big deal? Why is
a iui oi Activists an torn up
about the Makah Indians trying
to practice their rights under the
treaties signed years ago.
For hundreds and hundreds
of years the Makah tribe has
been hunting the Whale, long
before the Whitman came to
this country. It was the lively
hood of the northwestern coastal
Indian tribe to hunt the Gray
Whale, which was used for food
and other uses of the tribal people
Everything from the Whale
had a value to the Makah Tribe.
The Whale to the Makah
Tribe is much the same as the
Salmon, the Roots, and the
Berries are to the Columbia
River Tribes. Special
ceremonies are held to give thanks to the Great Creator, for the
abundance of all the resources that were provided for the Indian
tribes all down through the centuries.
Here in Warm Springs, in the spring we gather in the longhouse
to give thanks for all the roots and we prey that what we take will
be used to the best interest for our survival.
Also in the spring as the first Salmon runs come up the rivers
the Tribes also gather to give thanks to the Creator for supplying
all the fish in the rivers before anyone is allowed to catch any fish.
This is still carried out today before anyone can catch a fish they
must observe the rituals of each tribe.
As the summer season comes along we all gather in the
longhouse again to prey to the Great Creator thanking him for the
abundance of fruit he has provided for all the tribes. This is carried
out from the early spring when the first salmon come up the rivers,
when the roots grow and are ready for harvest and during the
summer months when all the fruits and berries are ready for
harvest. No one is allowed to catch any fish, or dig any roots or
pick any fruit until all the rituals are carried out.
This was the way of life for the Columbia River Tribes for
hundreds of years. All the Indian laws were handed down from
generation to generation and everyone treated them with utmost
respect. The beliefs the Tribesmen had in the Great Creator for
generations gave them strength and something to look up to.
Today there is a big controversy over the Makah Tribes of
practicing the traditions they have experienced for years and
years. Their activity comes with the migration of the great Gray
Whale from the Arctic waters to that off the shores of Mexico and
other parts south.
As the migration is on and the Whales are passing the shores of
the Makah Tribes they do their rituals as they prepare for the
whale hunt. For years the Makah Tribe has done this and their
prayers were answered with a sufficient amount of Whale to last
them for food and other uses as there was no waste from the Whale
because everything had its use for the Makah Tribe.
For several years during this Century the Makah Tribe has not
practiced what is truly their right from the treaties signed years
ago that they be allowed to take Whale for their substance. Today
they have decided to practice what their Tribes have done for
years and years. Today there is a lot of opposition from groups
who have no idea what the Whale means to the Makah Tribes. Its
not that they are going to go out and kill every Whale that comes
along, but what they feel they need to use. The way the activists
make it sound and look like the Makah Tribes are going to wipe
out the entire Whale population.
It would be just great if the tables were changed and the activists
were to kill the Whale. Just like they did the Buffalo from the
Plains Indians years ago claiming that the Buffalo population was
to great to where they went out and killed the Buffalo by the
hundreds right on the range. The main purpose was to cut down
on the Plains Indians substance and do away with the Buffalo in
order to eliminate the Plains Indian tribes, (just my theory).
The Makah Tribe has every right to go out and kill a Whale as
they have done for years and years for their subsistence. Just like
any other race as they do for their survival. I guess it's OK for the
Japanese and Russian fishermen to kill the Whale and nothing is
said or done to them. AHH-Nah-Chi-Toon!!!

Grandmother tells of missing horns from
grandson's burial site
May 4, 1999
To Whom it may concern:
My name is Arlcnc Boileau,
Grandmother to Joel Martinez who
passed away in February of this
year. I go up and visit him often.
Today I was saddened to see that
someone had stolen the magnificent
Elk Horns that one of Joel's friends
had presented to him. They were
gone. This letter is to the person
who took them. Hello, I am sure
you really needed to take the horns

Hello from Pastor Rick.
We here at the Presbyterian
Church are doing a bible study on
Sunday Nights called Parenting
Teens... I want to share some of the
ideas of this program... Things that
effect your teen. 1. Expectations
from a lot of adults. 2. An intense
desire to be accepted by friends. 3.
Pressures to act upon their own
values against the values of parents
or friends. 4. To want adult roles
yet fear the adult responsibilities.
5. The encouragement of the media
to experiment. 6. Disappointment
with adults wno tan as roie moaeis.
7. The enormous physical and
psychological changes that occur
at this time of life. How to begin as
a parent? Read New Testament
Titus chapter 2, verses 6, 7, and 8.

could be water under the bridge to
some but the loss of a brother, Luther
Danzuka is an on-going concern for
us. My opinion is that a slap on the

Involuntary Manslaughter is a
death caused inadvertantly by ne-

wrecking a car and killing a friend or
relative, unintentionally or
inadvertanly. The persons respon

for whatever reason. I am sure that if
Joel were alive, he would have said, go
ahead you can have them. Joel would
have seen your need. I can not express
the hurt and pain I felt when I
discovered they were not there. To me
this was the greatest gift any one could
have given. And to have someone take
them, just take them is the worst thing
anyone could do? When you read this
letter and look into your heart know
wnat you nave really accomplished.

Happy belated birthday Tiny from your
Aunt Joyce
To Tiny:
This is to wish you a belated
birthday. I'm sorry I couldn't be there
to spank you. I just wanted to let you
know that you are like a son to me
from the time you were born. I
remember the good ole days when
your mom, you and I used to travel a
lot. Just sightseeing the coast. You
were such a cute little kid and I enjoyed
helping your mom take care of you.
When you'd get into trouble with your
mom I'd put you in my car and just
take you for a ride. You used to love
me playing my music so loud you'd
dance around in the car.
Remember the time we were
driving kinda late at night and we seen
that porcupine? After we passed it
you looked down at the floor of the car
to see if it was there? And you put
your legs and feet up on the seat? That
was so funny.
