S. Care Center Underway Courtesy of the Pioneer Site preparatin work has begun on a new $4 million elder care center in Warm Springs. Construction crews could begin working on the facility which will include 50 one-bedroom units, and 1 8 two-bedroom units, for a total of 40. The facility, approved by a general vote of the tribal electorate in March of 1 998, will also incllude a kitchen, dining room, senior day care and services. The new elder care center will be 40,800-square-feet in size, roughly the same size as the tribes' early childhood center. While a ground-breaking ceremony was held in December for the facility, actual construction has been delayed for a time, due to complications in the bidding process. However, the project is again moving forward, and construction is expected to begin soon. When is operation, the center will employ 15 tribal members. Jobs that will be created include certified nursing aids, cooks and housekeepers. The facility to be located near the senior housing development and senior center in Warm Springs is needed as the population of tribal members is growing, with approxmately 170 members age 60 and older, tribal information indicates. The need for the facility can also be seen in the strong support which the project received inb the March 1 998 tribal vote of the total 717 votes cast in the electin, 645 votes, or nearly 90 percent, were infavor. Infant Follow Along Program From the day they are born, they learn all kinds of things like: "Eating and sleeping" "Listening and looking" "Wiggling and moving" They learn from everyone around them-from their parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles, sisters, and brothers. You can encourage their learning through a special Infant Follow Along Program (IFAP), sponsored by the Head Start and Early Intervention Program on the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs Indian Reservation. Parents who enroll their infants in this Infant Follow Along Program receive a brief questionnaire every four months until their baby is three years old. Each questionnaire alerts parents to the skill level of their child's age group. The results of the scoring of the questionnaire informs professionals and parents of possible concerns in their child's development. Parents involved in the Infant Follow Along Program will work with Professional Development Specialists and leam how to teach their infants new ways to leam. If you are interested in the Infant Follow Along Program contact Carolyn Winishut or Tryna Muilenburg at (541) 553-3241.
