It will take place at Tygh Ridge arena, Dufar, OR (south of the Dalles on Highway 197). In attendance for the Broncs will be J.L. Schaffer who is the Columbia River Circuit Champ and Rookie of the Year. For the Bulls is Guy Bob Waite who brings over 12 years of experience with him. Bullfighters will be instructed Dan Newman who participated in C.R.C. Finals in 96 & y . uarcoack riders will get thechance to be entertained by John Hammack, wno nas over years experience and is a 5 time O.R.A. Champion. Brought to you by: Masterson & Filbin Rodeo Companies Buffs lose to Lasalle and The Dalles Lorien Stacona collected the most donations with $210 dollars Students at Jefferson County Middle School shot hoops and did basketball skills to raise money for the American Heart Association. Approximately 30 students gathered donations and participated in the 4th Annual "Hoops for Heart" event which was held at Jefferson County Middle School on Wednesday, April 7, after school. The students raised $1,018.00 which was sent to the American Heart Association. Contributions collected by participants will fund research and education about heart disease and stroke, the leading cause of death among adult Americans. The Madras Boys Baseball team lost twice this week first to the visiting LaSalle Falcons on Monday, April 19 with A score of 7-1. In the game the buffs couldn't get over the hump as they only scored on a hit by Jake Jaca. The Buffs only got three hits the entire game coming from Jaca, Charlie Nyara, and Keller Christensen. On Wednesday, April 21, the Buffs dropped a well fought battle with the Dalles Indians on their home field 13-10. Charlie Nyara hit a homer to help the buffs but it wasn't enough. Freshman Jacoby Ellsbury led the buffs with 3 hits, two singles and a double. Next up for the Buffs is a home game against the Wilsonville Wildcats. Game time 4:30. The March to Mazatlan winners The top fundraiser for the event was fifth grader Lorien Stacona who collected $210 in donations. Jason Walters, Mathew Garcia, Hannah Pugh and Rodney Katchia also collected large donations. Mr. Jordan and Mr. Sweeney, co-directors for the event, want to thank all the students who participated and the community members who donated to raise money for the worthy cause. A special thank you to Erickson's Sentry, Safeway, Ahern's Grocery & Deli, McDonald's and Burger King. People participated in aerobic exercises throughout the month at the community wellness center hoping to get enough hours of exercise to win a collection of prizes. The results are in and here are the winners; Nitanna Knouff was the winner of the Nike warm up suit. Coming in second was Mary Stewert who won herself apairof new shoes. Josephine Johnson came away with third place and a CD Walkman. Thelma Coburn was the winner of the Special Award, which was movie rentals from Video Video. Lovie Ike, Fitness Coordinator, would like to thank Esmade Made and Bo Ortiz for their Sponsorship and involvement during the 1999 March to Mazatlan. Junior National Basketball Team. He has been invited to participate in the prestigious U.S. Eastern Regional Basketball Championships on July 12-18, 1999 in Columbus, Ohio. Based in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the U.S.A. Junior Nationals provides one of the top amateur competitions in the United States and offers its program to all athletes who have a high interest in basketball and are interested in developing their skills ana tecnniques through statewide, national, and international competition. This is an unique opportunity for all athletes to improve their basketball talent through highly organized competition. S In order for the boys to travel they had a car wash and a bake sale for the expenses. I have to commend the boys for all their hard work also the parents for being very supportive with the baked goods for the sale. Thank you Guy Wallulatum, Helda and Lorraine Culpus for the money donation, thank you Lovey Colwash for making all the signs and getting the boys set up for the car wash which was at the community center. The boys came home with sportsmanship trophy, Scott Kalama brought home an all-star bag. We also want to say thank you to Darrell Smith for your huge contribution, it was appreciated, we were able to participate in the Chief Spirit Tournament which was held back in February. Lucinda Heath Courtesy of the Yakama Nation Review TOPPENISH - World famous rodeo entertainers Leon and Vicki Adams will highglight the 67the annual Toppenish Powwow and Rodeo held July 1 -4 in Toppenish, WA. The Adamses have been named the specialty act of the year in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, most recently in 1 997. The opportunity to work the rodeo in Toppenish will be a home coming for Vicki, who is a Washington native. Vicki was an alternate Miss Indian America, representing her mother's tribe, the Yakama nation. She was also the Northwest Indian barrel racing champion for many years. Vicki is famous for her renowned dancing horses, well know as a trick and roman rider, and as a trainer of outstanding show and barrel racing horses. Blackhawks hold Slam & Jam Tourney The Roughriders out of Madras won the High School Division in the 1999 Blackhawks Slam and Jam Tournament held on April 9, 10, and 11, 1999 at the Warm Springs Community Wellness Center. The tournament had two age divisions with a high school and under and a 7th grade division. The Runner-up went to the Bullz from Yakima, Washington and Crook County went home with Third place. High School Division All-Stars are as follows: Warm Springs-Chasan Walker and Joel Santos, Madras Rebels-Travis Moschetti and Adam Boatwright, Blackhawks-Alex Carlson and Nick Bowlby, Crook County-Jared Abell and Ryan McCarthy, Bullz- Lafonte and Joe Nenamkin, OE Roughriders-Jake Jaca and Matt Everson. In the 7th Grade Division the Champions were the Us- Wuns, the Runner-up went to the Blackhawks and third place went to the Timbercubs. All-Stars from the Timbercubs went to Simon, Mark and Tommy Napyer; Blackhawks-Jared Allen, JusUn Greene and Vernon; Us-Wfuns-Owen Danzuka, Isiah Tewee and Patch Adams. Leon Adams also comes from a ranching and rodeo family, and has been a member of the PRCA since 1964, performing in his first rodeo when he was 12. Adams will bring Geronimo and Apache - roman riding bramas - the only act in the world of its kind. The Adamses have both appeared in movies and train horses, not just for their own umnique performances, but for some of the top cowboys and cowgirls in the world. Leon has trained roping and steer wrestling horses for some of the worlds top cowboys, and has hazed for several National Finals steer wrestlers. The 2nd Annual Tygh Ridge All Indian Rodeo will be held on May 15 & 1 6, 1999. It will take place 8 miles north on highway 197 from the old Tygh Valley Rodeo Grounds. . Events included are Saddle Bronc, Bareback, Bull Riding, Team Roping, Barrel Racing, Calf Roping, Breakaway, Bulldogging, Wild Horse Race, and Wild Cow Milking. Entry fee is $50.00. Contestant fee is $ 10.00. Added per event is $300.00. Books open on May 10-11, from 5 10p.m. Performance times are 1:00pm daily and admission is $5.00 for people over 12, $2.50 children 6 thru 12, children under 6 are admitted for free. Roadwarriors Biathlon set for April 24, 1999 The Warm Springs Recreation ; Department and the Kah-Nee-Ta . Vacation Resort are cordially inviting you to compete in the Roadwarriors Biathlon on Saturday, , April 24, 1999 at Kah-Nee-Ta Vacation Resort. The event will begin at the Kah-Nee-Ta Village at I 10:00 a,m. with the novice division starting at 10:00 a.m. Joey Ortiz was the Wellness 4 Coordinator for the Confederated I Tribes of Warm Springs Recreation Department for 3 years. He was an outgoing and energetic person who's personal goal was to get the community involved in physical fitness activities as much as possible. As a person he worked countless hours, doing extra curricular activities such as; Dressing up for Halloween, being Santa Clause at the local Bazaar, and taking part of all the community activities that was sponsored by the Recreation Department including the Roadwarrior's Biathlon, in which he founded. Joey Ortiz was killed in a single car accident on September 2, 1995. He will be missed dearly and this year would like to honor him for w hat he has done and accomplished. The competitive course has a 22 mile biking course with a 10k run to follow, both start and finish at the Kah-Nee-Ta Village. There is also a modified course which is a shorter version with a 15 mile biking course with a 10k run to follow, both starting and finishing at the Village. There will be T-Shirts given to all participants and awards to the overall winners in each division. Divisions include; Individual men's and women's, Team- Men's; Women's; Youth; Co-ed.
