Western Rivers Girl Scouts host Sports Faire in Warm Springs Year...Three Team members Honored - . , . . ... it t .! a I - More than 200 Girl Scouts, leaders and parents participated in the Girl Scout Sports Faire at the Community Wellness Center in Warm Springs, sponsored by the Jefferson County Girl Scouts and the Warm Springs Community Wellness Center. Using the 1999 Cookie Sale mountain climbing theme, "Take it To The Top", girls from all over Central Oregon spent the morning participating in action packed fun! Community educators, business owners and sports enthusiasts volunteered their time and expertise to encourage girls to become active in sports, helping them to grow strong in today's world. There were ten sports stations including archery, Aikido, basketball, volleyball, jump roping, soccer, dance, juggling, aerobics and mountain climbing. After strenuous activity, girls took an "energy break" and were provided donated bottled water and a sampling of each variety of cookies to be sold this spring during the Girl Scout Cookie Sale. While resting, girls discussed safety issues involved in assuring a safe and successful cookie sale. As admission to the faire, girls donated over 300 cans of food to benefit the Warm Springs and Jefferson County Food Banks as a community service. Many of the girls concluded the event with a special tour of the Warm Springs Museum. The Girl Scout Sports Faire ties into the Girl Scout two-year program "Issues for Girls" which focuses on growing up female in today's society. Issues such as valuing differences, conflict resolution, being literate and developing health and fitness are at Roadwarriors Biathlon set for April 24, 1999 the heart of this program. The Western Rivers Girl Scout Council covers six counties in Oregon and serves more than 1 1 ,000 girls and adults. The Girls Scouts is the world' s pre-eminent organization committed to girls, where in an open and nurturing environment, girls build skills for success in the real world. Skills that will serve them all of their lives, such as strong values, social conscience, self-esteem and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. Leading the way for the buffs was Travis Moschetti who was the only sophomore in the league to get a spot on any of the All-League teams and honorable mentions. He landed a spot on the second team along with four other seniors. Jake Jaca and Jorge Mora received honorable mention for the year and Evan Brown was once again voted Coach of the Year for the Tri-Valley League. The boys return a strong nucleus and plan to have their younger players along with the ones named play a big role in their chances to return to the State Tournament after a disappointing season this past year.
