4 January 14, 1999 Warm Springs, Oregon Spilyay Tymoo E Coosh EEWA: 77te way Y w P J L Y A V S "P Mf S Kids create havoc, where are the parents? Looking for family I T That's the way the ball bounces. For years now there have been a lot of talk on the Tribal Public Safety Branch, mainly in the protection of tribal members. The way the people are treated by non-Indians. The do's and don'ts, and the Ifs and what. ifs. At the general council meetings questions have been raised and the only reply received is, "Okay, We'll check into that." And there is no response on what they did or not. Even at that many people won ' t step for ward to speak even though they may have a lagitiment point. They shrug it off by saying, "What's the use, they've already made up their minds and won't listen to what I have to say." It appears that there are some areas in' a department that needs investigating and something done, and all they say is, "We'll look into that." with no action. Like a way around the whole problem so as they can continue operating with the budget at question. The next year at a general council meeting the same question arises and the same excuse is given. There should be a limit on a time they will respond to the general public on all the questions arisen at the meetings. There should be a place where they say, "We have all of your concerns and we will check into them and report back to you on such and such a date on everything questioned, and not let go by them saying, "We'll check into that.'' It appears that this happens all the time at all the general council meetings, where they promise they will do something about it just to get on with the meeting and get back to operation with the new budget, and no feed back to the tribal members. There are a lot of unanswered questions floating around out there even now. Now as we are about to enter another century our future must be handled well. Our investments and resources have to be protected and handled well. In today's society there are plenty of people who don't know what our treaty rights mean to us. They are always questioning what right we have in doing certain things that anyone else cant ' do. Our hunting and fishing rights as well as all the other promises made during the sighing of the treaty with the United States Government. We' ve got to stand firm and defend what little we have left. Our timber and natural resources are being threatened all the time. All down through the centuries the Indian people have all lived in harmony, everyone looking out for the other. The big migrations from one area to the other collecting foods for the long hard winters. Today times are changing rapidly and each person just about has to lock up everything he owns where in the past there was trust among each other. Like they say "Traits' have been handed down through the generations and the Indian people all helped one another, by all sharing as a big family during hard times. When the Europeans or other cultures came to this country they brought their traits with them, like Steal from thy neighbor, Rob thy neighbor. Their traits have been taking over here lately as a person cannot leave his home unlocked like they did in the olden days. Oh Yeah! back to the referendum, we all should get out and vote one way or the other, your vote does count no matter who you are. Because we've got to start looking out for one another again and not let that greed trait take over where we will steal our neighbors blind. Steal from our friends and anyone around. Some things are hard to replace, valuable artifacts that have been handed down from generation to the next. Today valuable artifacts can be found in hock shops from that greed trait. That trait has been brought from the old world... AHH-NAH-CHI-TOON!!! To the editor, "Home the Place to Built America". Where are E, the PAR EKESofall the CHILDREN that are creating havoc in the community? WHY? are they running around the community all hours of the night when they should be in bed getting rest for school. WHY? are they abu sive, getting into Malicious Mischief by destroying property, doing theft in homes while residence are home or gone (shooting, beating up people). Are prophecies being fulfilled and our youth are fulfilling these proph ecies due to parents being irrespon sible in raising these children by the example we live or words that come out of our mouths. Satan is doing everything in his power to gather as many people on his side. 1. Parents, lets straighten up our lives in order to be examples (good) for our children to follow. 2. Break the chain of drinking and drugging. Your lives are so impor tant to your children's lives for the upbringing that is needed. They love you no matter what or who you are. 3. Break the chain of GOSSIP: this is Satan's best tool besides de pression. The most evil thing on the human being is the tongue & mouth. It can maim, kill, cause suicide, de stroy any home, will drive family away, have people's lives destroyed, have outstanding clean living Eeople's lives destroyed due to lies eing made up on them. People do ing this want them in the gutter with them. 4. PARENTS stop making com ments about getting even with people (your Indian people), for your chil dren hearing this will gather their so called friends and do the damage for you. 5. PARENTS: show your chil dren that you love them. By words and Hugs, touching in the right way is so important. 6. PARENTS: Listen to yourchil dren no matter what time of hour it is. Communication is so important they in turn will come to you in all time of need. Listen to your children's fears for it is real to them. Don't ignore these fears. 7. PARENTS: while sitting at the table eating, do positive role playing by doing something nice or speaking nice & positive talking on people you feel you despise. Look for the good in these people. You'd be amazed at how your feelings and thinking can change (practice makes perfect). 8. Start at home by making our children responsible. Helping at home is learning good responsibili ties. This is where it all begins with us parents. We have been entrusted with these precious spirits (children) by the highest power in heaven. We are responsible in building these temples up and sending them back clean & pure as they were loaned to us. Their sins will be upon us if we don't do our part in raising these children right. 9. Any children involved in any destruction or violating any rules with intent to commit theft, destruction or any bad thing, should have their monthly payments directed to all the vandal & theft or any destruction within the community & against people. In the cities they are making the parent's responsible for their children's part in destruction, why not here. 10. Teach our children while they are going to school, to befriend all students by speaking kind words to each other. Maybe the school will change with this kind of behavior. Indians need to pull in other Indian students, don't slander them. Espe cially those that do good in repre senting all of our Indian people, no matter what tribe they are. THEY REPRESENT YOU TOO!!! 1 1 . Children: get together, do some constructive, positive work free for your own community. Clean up the community by starting at your home. So much can be done: Wake up and do something good. Doing good is a pleasure, a joy beyond measure. Be willing to help someone MAYBE we can lead our parents instead. You are the future leaders. LET'S WAKE UP AND START TODAY!!! What we write on the hearts of a child cannot be erased and when a mother is at home to contribute to the indelible marks that are written on a child's tender heart, it is a rich heri tage. Many women have discovered the real problem with the rat race-that is when the race is over, you're still a rat. The father is the head, the mother is the heart. And without the heart, there can be no life. Remembering Mother When all the children have grown & gone, which memories of mother will linger on? Will it be the time she dried their tears, Hold them close and calmed their fears? The way she always found the time to read their favorite nursery rhyme Over & over, time and again, until they knew it, beginning to end. The sleepless night with an ailing child, Mother stayed there all the while, Ministering love with healing hands, Spinning tales of faraway lands. What memories will follow them as they go? All of these, and more, I know; But most important, can they say "She loved God's word and taught me to pray?" Sincerely, Shirley & Alvis Smith, Sr. Tribal member support addition of gaming Toe Ness An irate businessman dictated the following letter: "Sir, my stenographer, being a lady, cannot type what I think of you. I being a gentleman, won't dictate it. But, you, being neither, will know what I mean." "At present all this backlash from congress and it's constituents," said Peter Homer, President of the Na tional Indian Business Association. They feel Indians can't manage their own governments. They don't trust them to manage themselves. There's a lot of jealousy. They feel Indians are getting too big for their britches. George Scovine, Director of In dian Gaming for the Bureau of In dian Affairs did say. The Bureau of Indian Affairs is currently proposing it's own changes to the Indian Gam ing Regulatory act. Those changes involve the Secretary of the Interior being given authority to negotiate compacts states decline to negotiate with tribes. While some west-side casinos are folding, floundering or fighting regu lators, Indian HeadKaheeta Casino appears to be doing fair. Locations have proved the deter mine of many of the states Tribal casinos. Most northwest casinos are crowded around Interstate 5, fight ing for a piece of the mighty, enter tainment dollar at Cow Creek, Grand Ronde, in areas of Seattle and Olym pia and Vancouver British Colum bia. The Lummi Indian Nation, one of the first tribes to open an Indian casino, closed it's doors in 1997, and laid off nearly 240 casino employ ees. Officials at tribal casinos predict at the time that the Lummi 's plight might be first of several closures. Since then, three others have made Virginia Wyena "Sap-Pacth'-Ah" Memorial to be held at the Priest Rapids Longhouse February 20th, 1999 at 9 a.m. Basketweavers, Family, Friends, Relatives & Co-workers invited. Polk In Springfield, OR deep cuts and halted their state-mandated payments, which was intended to offset the casino's impact on local communities. Four weeks ago, US Federal Mar shals removed more than 100 slot machines from the Pacific County Casino. East of the Cascades, our close blood brothers the Colville and Spokane tribes, which offer more than 2,000 slot machines in seven casinos, are bracing for US Federal agents may now turn their attention on them. Where the Warm Springs Indian Tribal voters voted to bring gaming to our Rez, they were thinking in terms of 100s of gambling customers per day and plenty of good jobs for tribal members. Our hoping for 1 00' s of customers and Tribal members hired for most jobs was just a bad dream. Problem is most people do , not want to drive 12 miles out of the way to gamble, only 22 tribal mem bers make an effort to work at our gaming business. It looks to me that if our gaming business is relocated to the Big River area, about 90 of the tribal gaming employees will be non Indians from the local areas, so it may be that 290 white people will cry all the way to the bank. For the Big River area this may mean tribal ca sino employees will be spending lots of bucks in the local business. Any way you look at it, it will be good that our Big River Casino non employees will be able to afford nice cars, gasoline, nice homes, better apartments, some other good things in life, their stopping to pick some t bones or something after work. And soon it will be our tribal casino money is bouncing around the Big River community. Hood River is a good city of about 5,005 good peoples. The American Indians that live here is next to zero. The Japanese maybe 12 of total population, the poor Spanish speak ing people living around and near your fine city maybe as high as l3rd the population. The city has granted about 20 or so Las Vegas type slot machines to be in good use at the city wet spots. The Hood River people enjoy spending hard earned cash at 2 city bingo halls, some store sells Oregon state lottery tickets to a good number of people who are all in hopes of winning millions. I have been ad vised that Elk' s Lodge did have some Las Vegas type slot machines. Please do not tell anyone. Hood River has a high rate of unemployment which is 12 of the population needing good full time work. The more people I talk to from Hood River, the more they tell me they hope the Tribe will go ahead and built this one fine ca sino. If they have a casino in town, it will save a lot of money from going to Reno, Nevada. In the end it will mostly Big River people benefiting the $50 million windfall. How can a few Big River Rednecks fight a good new buffalo like this? Inmi-naimuma, We are all one people. To the editor, To Chris Talifson and Family, In response to your article in the last edition, I sympathize with you over your dog. I have a similar story but the roles are different. A long time ago, I was visiting friends and when I left them, I accidentally ran over their dog as I was backing out of their driveway. I didn't know I had ran over their dog at the time (they seen it happen). But because I was in a rig that had good shocks and huge tires, I didn't feel (me hit) anything and I didn't hear if the dog cried out be cause if I had, my radio was too loud for me to hear anything. I didn't learn what I had done Time Shares, send $1 and SASE to DBK, POB 1009, Warm Springs, OR 97761. You'll receive infotmation about what it is, how it works and what to expect. until a future visit when I noticed their dog wasn't around. When I asked them about it, they said she died. I asked if she was hit by a car. They confirmed it. Then I couldn't resist actually naming people who I thought did it, when they kept saying "no" to the people I named. Since I had no more names to blame and since I visit often, I asked in a low voice, "Did I run over your dog?" and they shook their heads YES! I couldn't believe it! I felt so bad! That was their favorite dog too. Please realize that maybe the per son who hit your dog didn't even know it, like me.
