Love, Mom Annual Timber Symposium to be held at Kah-Nee-Ta Resort The 23rd Annual National Indian Timber Symposium will be held at Kah-Nee-Ta, April 12-15, 1999. In conjunction with the symposium, the Confederated Tribes are sponsoring a logo contest. The logo design should encompass all natural resources ac tivities. The deadline for entries is 5 p.m. Monday, December 7, 1998. The logo should be done in black and white, and an 6 12" by 7" in size. The logo will be used for advertis ing, promotion and the cover of the symposium book. The winning entry will receive a $200 cash prize. Spilyay Tymoo is published bi-weekly by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. Central Oregon Community Col lege has recently re-established it's Native American program. Located on the Bend campus, the office will for Native American students. "The college is committed to serv ing all of it's students and recognizes the Native American community as an important part of the greater col lege community," said Robert Bar ber, COCC president. The program offers academic, personal and financial counseling. The office will also serve as a liaison with other COCC programs and other colleges' Native American programs. With the help of an advisory board, the office will plan cultural activities and exhibits. "This office will be an effective advocate for Native American stu dents and their unique educational needs," said Jack Scruggs, program coordinator. "The office will work closely with students so that the stu dents can ultimately solve their own college-related problems." Scruggs will initiate a planning session t solicit student and staff in put for the formation of an advisory board. Depending on the suggestions, he says, Native American students will have the opportunity to engage in cultural activities on campus, such as college-sponsored powwows and cultural exhibits, as well as visits to other campuses and reservations to participate in their cultural events. "Safe Sitter" class offered Children age 11 to 13 may now register for the "Safe Sitter" course that will be offered during the Christ mas break in both Warm Springs and Madras. Sponsored by Mountain View Hospital District, the Safe Sit ter program instructs youngsters on how to handle emergencies when caring for younger children. The goal of Safe Sitter is to reduce preventable deaths among children being cared for by baby-sitters. Thou sands of adolescents across the coun try have been trained in Safe Sitter. Students receive hands-on prac tice in basic life saving techniques as well as instruction in security pre cautions such as what to do if a stranger comes to the door. The sitter will also learn information on child development and age appropriate "Although COCC is a smaller in stitution, I certainly enjoy visiting the University of Oregon and Or egon State University campuses to visit their respective Longhouses and students' clubs and would certainly want to see some similar things for students at this college," said Scruggs. Scruggs recently served as the education coordination for the Paiute tribal office in Burns. He has also worked as a school counselor and a high school teacher. He has also served with the U.S. Diplomatic Corps in West Africa, Vietnam, Ger many and India. He earned his master's degree in counseling from OSU.
